So I bought an 89 LX-i Coupe a couple weeks back, ran fine, needed oil so i gave it an oil change. right after i change it, i go to get gas at the gas station. fill it up, start it, put it in first, start to go, then CRACK, from the front end, but nobody feels anything. i cant move, no gears engage at all. we assume i blew my clutch, i get a pull from my friends explorer. we get home, get the chain off and i put it in first, it runs. im like wtf. ok? let it sit overnight. run it the next day, and when we get back, i pop the hood to be greeted by white smoke, not A LOT, but a noticable amount. my question is: where is the smoke coming from? my bearings since i rode the brakes home? my brakes? something with the oil system? a blown gasket? help please, need to get this car running good quickly, i dont want any more oil on my driveway. and help is much appreciated. thanks. -Adam

white smoke could be a lot of things. burnt oil, blown coolant hose, steam, yeada yeada yeada. CHeck your oil level, check your Cooant, all ur hoses. As far as where the smoke is coming from, that you gotta see. YOu have see where the smoke is coming from and if y ou could, take a pic of it.

if your coolent levels are fine then check around for any wet looking oil, my lx leaks a little oil and it drips onto the downpipe, wich makes some whiteish smoke come out of the hood/front, if you find a oil leak just check your oil often to find out how much its leaking, add il when needed, if its not a fast leak then i wouldent worrie about it to much

ya, i noticed some fresh oil, ill have to check into these ideas later. thanks guys.

oh, and what could it be if it is oil dripping? is there more than a couple gaskets that can contribute to the problem?

A blown head gasket or rad hose doesnt explain the gears not engaging. I woulld have a look at the transmission for leaks. Also pull the filler plug on the tranny and see if there is oil in there

The oil could be leaking from the oil filter base.

Common practice to see if coolant is leaking, is to hook up a "pressure tester" to the radiator cap. Look at the readings, if pressure goes down, then you have coolant leaking somewhere. Generally white smoke is from water burning.

Any oil leaks can be seen with a dye that is put into the oil, & using florescent light & special glasses to look for the leak.

yahdaa, yahdaa technical crap. I like to use some Brakleen & spray the engine off real good. Then look for the oil leak.

So i check the filter and pan bolt to see if my friend didnt tighten em all the way. wasn't the problem. but, while waiting for it to warm up so we can look from under the car, my friend notices my vlave cover is loose :wtf: ...i don't know how this happened, but we tightened it, and we're gonna get some engine bright later and check again, hopefully that was it.
