View Full Version : Got my parts car tonight for the PGM-FI conversion

Went to meet up with Legend_master and ended up buying his old car for my donor car. It aint pretty, but the engine sounds great, something I can really work with and gives me a good starting point. This is gonna be a chore to say the least, but looking at that lovely little super simple vacuum box the PGM-FI engine has compared to the freaking nightmare of a vacuum box I dealt with on the A20A1 Carbed engine, it wont be THAT hard LOL.

As soon as I get the swap done, I will start listing good parts left from both cars for sale, and after a couple months when the requests for parts die off, the car will be disposed of.

Sooo, any of you with tons of info know if there is a "rebuild kit" for this new engine? All new gaskets and seals, mains, rings, etc etc? Or do I have to sit down and have them gather up all the parts seperately?

Any other suggestions or things to look out for?

theres plenty of rebuild kits for our cars, napa for example carrys them

good luck with the swap though. im intimidated by it unless i score on a good condition coupe, then i might gut my car for a coupe. theres plenty of help on here and carotman has a write up on it

well since the engine is going to be out of the car you should rebuild but if you dont have the money just change out all the gaskets....they have kits....I think Felpro is the best gasket but they are like 180(depends on who you get it from)

I dunno why honda tried to stick in a sick poodle, they should have given all cali-emissions cars EFI and given the rest of us webers.

probably the same reason why only the 88-89 accords had push buttons on the lx/ex/exi models while 86-87 all accords had sliders up here in canada. i just dont get why they did that though. and why they offer a carbed and a fuel injected model is something i dont get.

Yeah was a short drive so not bad. I noticed people did not want to follow too close though for all the broken glass coming off the trunk lid LOL. Had a few folks whip in behind the trailer, only to back way off and change lanes. Shrapnel rocks.

I got the car cleaned out today (a whole trashcan full of crapola!!) and pulled the hood and started taking TONS of underhood pics of all the connections and hose/wiring routing. I also pulled the spark plugs out of MY car and turned the engine over and it shot coolant out of the two middle plug holes about 20 feet across the driveway. Oh how lovely. Let it dry out in the 108* heat and put the plugs back in and got it to start just enough to drive it up in the driveway, where it will set while I tear it to pieces.

Looks like it's going to be alot of work, but pretty straightforward since it's just a swap of harness and engine and not alot of "modification" work. Just hope it all works right when I get it all back together!!!

BTW, Antares' car looks like it will kick some ass!! The brake setup he has is amazing, with that B18 V-tec under the hood, he's gonna really need something to stop that lil rocket. What I love about it is that he can haul some ass like the big boys do, yet probably still nearly clear 30MPG doing it, while my race truck barely clears 8MPG. I'm still not into the ricer crowd, never will be, but the tuner crowd, Im growing more fond of, especially with gas prices like they are :bandance:

Here a good link for the rebuild kit.....

As far as things to look for, just do a compression test on it. That basically will give you good idea what shape the engine is in. Look at the main & rod bearings. When you pull the head off, take out the cam & rocker arms. Put the head up side down & pour water on the valves. That is a good simple test to see if any valve is not seating properly.

Is it possible or advisable to possibly bore out the block and run some oversized pistons?

Also, if I were to have the head milled to bump up compression a bit, how much do I go? .005 or .010 or what? I dont want to get too high CR and cause detonation problems, just enough to add some power. So, what's acceptably safe for these motors on 87 pump gas?

Also, with a header, is there an exhaust kit I can get that is still "stock quiet" yet help with power? I know my exhaust is not in the best shape and plan to replace it with this engine, but dont want a fart tube sound. Any suggestions?

I looked on their site, and all they show is a rebuild kit for an A20A3 engine with carb, not EFI engine kit.

Am I missing something? The closest kit I could find was part number

EKH17M
$239.00

EKH17B
$339

EKH17G
$299.00

EKH17R
$179.00

which are all just different levels of the rebuild kit....

I've looked at different rebuild kits for the A20A3. It covers both engines, I rebuilt mine a while back, & it had injector seals in there. The rebuild kit comes with everything needed to rebuild the engine & head basically.

Got my shop lined out to do the machine work on the engine. Looking at having the block and head hot tanked, having the block honed and decked, having the head rebuilt and true the surface, and then install a full rebuild kit. Should be a tight motor when I'm done. Nothing fancy, but reliable as hell with hopefully a bit more pep than it originally started with. I think I can keep this all under a grand (hopefully).

Here are some of my pics, after the cleanup lol. I think the amount of money spent on Starbuck's coffee drank while driving this car exceeded the car's own value LMAO. Dude hope it was decaf, if not that probably explains the blown tranny!!!!

LOL a hooker would have been easier to deal with!!! I had to use a torch to de-germ my needle nose pliers after removing the dangler bag and stone shield.... :barf:

Yeah I did. I just went with Top-Line basic rebuild kit. You can upgrade with high volume oil pump & bearings I think. Sound like your going good with plans on attempting it. The rebuild kit doesn't come with new head bolts, but you can re-use your old ones. I'd just torque them down to 55 ft. pounds.

Edit- Outside the rebuild kit, get a all metal head gasket.. Fel-pro should carry one.

Does Cometic make a head gasket for the A20A3 that you know of? I'm gonna look around myself too and see if I can find one.

Nope, they make them for the B series and up, nothing for any A series. Fel-Pro's it is I guess......

or, go the cheap way and turn you're lx-i into a dx. might even make a few bucks selling parts in the process.
