ok im stumped. it started last night doing this problem. when the car is at a stop light or parked and idling it wants to stall. rpms from like 1000 down to 300 and back and forth up-down up donw etc. ive replaced fuel filters already. could it be the pump/

Could be one of a hundred things on these bloody cars :-P...but to test the fuel pump, disconnect the line from the carburetor, hook up a fuel pressure gauge, and disconnect the fuel cutoff relay. Then turn the key to the "ON" position. The pressure should be 2.6 - 3.2. If you don't have the gauge, let it flow into a container. The service manual (available on this site) tells how much should come out in 60 seconds, I believe.

Also check for vacuum leaks. Spray carb cleaner around and see if any spots suck it up and you'll hear the engine change respectively.
