Well, since I bought an 87 hatch DX it had to have a little idle problem. Now I remembered why I converted to EFI :)

Anyways, I'll have to re-learn my carb skills that I intentionaly forgot over time lol.

The car starts up fine in the morning and will come off the fast idle somewhat easyly. However, if I start it up when the car is warm. It will idle around 1800/2000rom and will have a hard time getting off the fast idle. If I drive it around, it will idle at around 800 in gear (auto) and 1100 in neutral (is this normal?)

I guess I may have a problem with the fast idle unloader. What do you guys think?

Since this is a new car to me, I have a list of things I need to check first, like the ignition timing, plugs and vacuum leaks. I don't think anything leaks but we'll see.

Just get the idle set right when fully warm and off fast idle.

Then if something is wrong when the car is cold you can try to check for problems with the choke and other cold start functions.

1000 – 1800 rpm ( ef i) ; 2000 – 3000 rpm ( carb ) << thats the stock specified range for the fast idle and the normal for both cars (efi & Carb) should be 750 ~ 800 rpm. My Carb was set to 900rpm by my mechanic so the car would not shut off when put it 1st gear (it had tons of problems).

I am sure no one adjusted or played with the AJC, but it was the only thing i adjusted to keep my idle down. the other problem with the car revving like crazy was that the fast idle was fugged up and sometimes the throttle stuck open with the idle creeping all the way upto 3K or even 4K at times.

Well, I'd personally ditch the fast idle lol...yours is working better than mine was, but the vacuum system on these is very touchy, and I don't think it has a lot to spare in that department.

As for the cause, my first guess would be the choke is more opened up with the car warm, so maybe that takes away just enough overall vacuum to keep the fast idle unloader from pulling the cam all the way out of the way.

screw stock vacuum lines, get rid of them. you don't need them.

If you fast idle unloader diaphragm is leaking, the fast idle will only be disabled by the bi-metal spring in the choke control. This means that the fast idle times are relatively independent of engine temperature.

that has to be the most technically intensive reply i have heard about a carb fast idle.

personally, i'd say put a manual choke on it and do the vacuum removal. havent had trouble with mine since i did the removal, except for the choke which i should probably do before cool weather comes around.

The A16A has a manual choke. I should get the A16A cluster (with choke light) and install the parts from an A16A on the carb... I'll have an OEM manual choke this way haha.

I hate messing with these carbs. One day I will spend the money & get a Weber. Then I can do away with most of vacuum lines. Good luck with it.

i dunno, i've found it to be quite easy to work on the kehin carb myself. i rebuilt it and tuned it myself. this being before i had much knowledge with carbs. personally, i will probably spend the money and get the carbs and intake i want fairly soon. yeah, on that i better get going on finding the intake manifold.

Look at part # 23. It shows as a choke cable set up.

so where does the manual choke pull mount to? i think i will be putting a manual choke on my car. i can find a nice place for it but i'd like to know where it properly goes.
