Are the perks of being a Foundation Member worth it? I was just thinking about it but figured I'd get other peoples opinions first before I committed to anything.

ddude, simmer down...you've been too upset lately.

3geez membership is not compulsory by any means, but very much appreciated by those members who are compelled to do so. It's a way for members to give back and help cover the cost of the bandwidth used here.
given the amount of time I personally spend on 3geez per day, and have for the past few years, plus the friends I've made on here, felt that donating was the least I could do to keep things moving along.

I'd suggest 'hanging out' for a while and getting familiar with people here and all the info (though in your case, having a mk2 gti makes most of the info useless) and then decide if you'd like to help out.

Yeah, I own Mk2 VW's, but I'm also in the market for a 3g, so I don't see the info on this site as useless. This is one of the better forums I've been on, and I can appreciate that accordingly. I'm just not sure to what extant quite yet, haha.

Well that's cool. Like I said, hang out, see what you think, and then you can decide if you'd like to contribute financially or not.

Also, after mk2 ownership I'd want a 3g too :P I had mine for 8 months and it was a COMPLETE pile of crap. Biggest purchasing mistake to date. Oh well, at least I learned something....

Its all about what trim level you get with MkII's. I'd never get a GTI made after 87, and even then it'd have to be a CIS injected 16v DOHC. The only good injection on them is mechanical. I had one 92 GTI with Digi fuel injection, and its now a parts car for my 86 CIS Golf 4 door. It was a bastard to upkeep, and just wasn't worth the money. The 86, however, is a tank. I wouldn't part with that car for anything.

And I love the styling of oldschool Hondas. I've been looking to get back into something Japanese, but its hard finding something cheap that won't give me an STD.

I had a '90 GTI 8v--digifant, of course. The car was actually pretty solid motor wise, and after I got a chip the car was much better; no throttle tip-in hesitation and (presumably) leaner across the power band. Best $50 I spent on that car besides the Recaro seats. The electrical was mostly a nightmare, but that's partially my fault-- I didn't do a thorough enough inspection of the car when I bought it. Ultimately, I fell in love with the idea of GTI ownership before getting one, and I bought the first one I drove. I was catching up on neglected maintenance the entire time I owned it. What was initially only going to be a couple hundred of bucks quickly turned into a couple thousand+ .Oh well, live and learn.

Digifant has alot more power potential than CIS due to easy tuneability, but with CIS, you have almost nothing electrical to worry about. Even if its running like crap, its always running. I'll stop my rant now, and save it for the VW boards.

But as far as purchasing a 3rd gen goes, about how much should I expect to pay for something in decent running condition, even if the outside is a little beat down? For comparisons sake, lets say a beat SE-I.

Dunno, the price varies a lot with these cars. I sold my '86 Lx-i sedan for $2500 almost 3 years ago, and it had 180k on it at the time. It was very very clean, had a few simple mods (i/e, 16's, h&r's w/ tokicos) and had been meticulously maintained by the original owner and myself.

A beat 3g shouldn't be more than $1k though, I wouldn't think, though an se-i might fetch more.

So are there any performance parts places available for these cars, or no? I've researched a bit and this is what I came up with:

-If you want cam work you need a regrind
-Place Racing made mounts etc for B-series swaps, but not anymore
-Any turbo manifold parts have to be custom made, and are hard to come by/expensive

Is there compatibility with parts from other Hondas? For example, I saw someone had Tokico Illuminas from a Civic on their car, and theres numerous threads on B18 intake manifolds that have been modified to fit the A20. On the same note, has anyone put an aftermarket manifold from a B-series on their car? Venom, Skunk2, etc... Any info is appreciated.
