I know this is a long shot: this just started,I've got this loud noise like one of those pin wheels would make when you were a kid. it's under the dash, right under the clock. and it only happens when the car is moving from 20mph or faster and increases in speed the faster the car goes. I can't even listen to the radio.
Is there a free moving fan in the dash somewhere
I pluged up the outer dash vents (the ones under the hood) to see if that would make a difference but it didn't and adusting the vent controls does nothing.
I really don't want some mechanic butchering my dash board.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
This is a Honda 89 Lxi

thanks, Jim

I might be wrong but could be the blower motor wheel going bad.
So when you have the control set at fresh the air coming in causes the whell to move faster as you go.
That's my theory.

Here's a shot of the blower assembly this might help you pin point where the noise is.

your fan motor probably worn out to the point where the bearing are gone and it has free play side to side. So when it sprins, the hamster cage kits the wall and it makes the noice.
i had this problem on my car. just replace the fan and you set to go.

I'm willing to go with speedo cable on this one. If it comes unseated from the back of the speedo head it will be noisy

it sounds like the speedo cable to me too, when they are about to go they make a flapping noise. if you look through the how to's on here they will tell you how to take out the instrument cluster,it's not nearly as bad as it sounds atually it's pretty easy. once you do that it's pretty easy to replace.

Well! guess what. It was the spedo cable. I got 90% of the noise out just by jerking the cable around. Eventually I'll have to fix it right.
Thanks,Jim

i have had a noisey speedo cable but they dont seem to make THAT much noise. it could be both of these.
