Howdy,

There are millions of fine scratches on my windshield; I think that
20 years of dirty windshield wiper is the culprit. You almost need
a microscope to see these scratches during the day. However,
at night the headlights of on-coming cars bounces on these scratches,
and turns into very disconcerting long streaks of light rays all across the
windshield. The scratches are severely annoying at night, so much so that
my eyes would start to experience pain and discomfort after prolonged
period of night driving. Can these fine scratches be buffed out? If not,
what is reasonable cost of replacing the windshield? Will they be able
to transfer the inspection sticker from the old windshield to the new one?

Thanks.

i would try some Steel wool....its like for glass and crome but i think it only gets rid of like the hard water stains....i got a pack for like 6 bucks at home depot...also my boss told me that you can wax windows? im not sure but yeah...i would try the cheap methods first and if you dont like it maybe a new window...should not cost more than 200 bucks installed.

steel wool will further destroy your windshield. polishing is an option, but my company charges $75 minimum to polish a windshield. I would just replace it if it was me.
You should be able to get a new one for around $200 installed, give or take. And it really depends on your area where you live. Big city........cheaper, rural..........more expensive.
Thats my opinion.

steel wool did not distroy my windshield...you need to get the special one that is for chrome and glass...trust me dude...i took autobody class and i cleaned my windshield inside and out...it looked new afterward...

anyways here is a WIKIpedia info-Steel wool is a bundle of strands of very fine steel filaments, used in finishing and repair work to polish wood or metal objects, and for household cleaning. Steel Wool is manufactured from special steel wool wire. Steel Wool is mainly used by woodworkers and craftsmen working with paint, lacquer and varnish. Often it is used for professional cleaning processes not only on wooden surfaces but also on marble, stone and glass because it is softer than these materials.

Are all windshield created equal? I ask because the windshield on my buddy's 5th gen accord shattered when a small, but fast, rock hit it. He ended up with glass fragments in his mouth and cuts on his arm and face, which required minor medical care. I couldn't believe windshield would shatter like that. I thought they are shatter proof.

The only steel wool that WON'T scratch glass is #0000 Super Fine steel wool. I have been in auto glass for 10 years dude, I don't care if you took autobody class or not. If you use the wrong grade............your windshield is done.
And the other question, most glass is the same. Offshore glass is junk, and so is Safelite glass.

well if you think of it it could be the glass or you could think of it as the rock hit at the right angle and right velocity and with a sharper point

88 Accord, LX, Carb, stick shiftI think eastwood makes a kit for polishing those out, also check with glass places, they might be able to proffsionally buff those out.

Well.............first, their installers are usually hacks, Safelite manufactures their own glass so all they meet are MINIMUM DOT standards at best.
You have any leaks yet? Notice I said yet??? Because you will.:) Trust me. Did you watch him do it? Did he properly prep the pinchweld...........or the glass? There is a lot to replacing a windshield, and most Safelite techs don' know shit.

Funny i was gonna ask about Safelight. I had one of there windshields and it pitted as bad as the original within 2 years. New one here cost me about 300$ installed last month . They said it was OEM theres blue and green tint and they only could get the green. I can't notice it really. They did a shitty job on the install got the black goop on my fender(outside) and left the inside a mess. Never shop vaced it out or nothin.

New windshields at night
