Came across this in the how-to, seemed reasonable, was preparing for a 2000$ paint job, thinking twice about it so let's see if I can save myself 2000$- $$$ so far = 48$ just started the bumper, will update with more pics soon, prepping the hood as we speak

same question....you should of wetsanded the whole car and got it got good...also did you clean it? cuz paint work stick to dirt...like i said sand it like that the paint would of had something to stick to...or else its all going to flake when you drive it on the freeway.take your time and masks parts off also.

lol I professionally paint houses so I know how paint works, I even use the roller suggested all the time at work for trim and mouldings, I sanded any parts I did and cleaned it with the mineral spirits before painting, and no it is not rough at all, because it is thinned with the spirits all it takes is a light roll afterwards and it self levels, if you look real close it has an apperance of glass, so far i'm loving it, 55$ now because I bought the fiberglass

Seems to be turning out nicely. Are you painting in a parking garage? What do people say when they come to park their cars? What about all that dust and fumes from cars coming in and out? Well, can't wait to see how it looks all done though. Please make sure to take pics out in the sun as well. We wanna see how smooth the finish is.

ya its pretty good, ive lived here for 20 years so people are pretty cool, its a small town house so i know every one, people are coming down at midnight when im fiberglassin asking questions and shit but no complaints so far, and theres no mess or anything, this is all done by roller, the only little bit of mess is from me sanding but no one cares, and i will have outside pics when ive got more done, i took on doing the side mouldings and sanding fiberglass by hand tends to take awhile, lol, speaking of wich im off to get some beer before i start again

I'm not not much on auto body, but know a little bit. Since your shaving the moldings, your going to need some stiff construction paper or plastic scrapers to look at, to get the moldings even when you start to sand the high/low valleys in your bondo work. (since you can't use much of a straight edge on it)

Use a bendable longboard. I've seen them and they work great. I need to make one so i can use it on my roof.

Do you think it's possible or even worthwhile to just do parts of the car that way? My paint's pretty good, but the finish came off the rear spoiler for some reason.

ya its possible to do parts at a time, thats a great part of this method, no flashing, although the colour and finish im sure wont match the rest of the car.

Don't worry guys, I wasn't going to do anything that wouldn't exactly match the rest of the car, I just wasn't sure what it would look like.

are you going to paint inside the door jam area? If so how did you remove all the grease from the hinges, sanding?

i havent tackled that part yet, yes i will, and yes i will sand, and use goof-off, great stuff.

Did you say you're using a roller brush? Do you have a link to this? I coudln't find anything in the howto section on the site...

I hope you used a longboard and sanded along the contours of the car when sanding the big surfaces. If you use too small of a sanding block, it will sand unevenly and create peaks and valleys. Then your car will look all wavey down the side. And what about the dust AFTER you painted the car that landed in the wet paint? Will you just wet sand it out?

What kind of paint is it that you're using? Is it standard automotive paint, or something else? If it's not automotive, it might not have the UV protection and ding resistance that you need for longevity...

Looks like it's coming along nicely though. :)

the side are not perfect, wasnt looking for perfect, but might give er another layer, the dust is after the paint had dried for a few days and i can wipe it off but yes, it gets wet-sanded, and the how-to will explain the rest, thanks

the point of him painting it is not because he cant find anyone to do it cheaply. its because its a project he took on and if you search a bit you will find that these chapo paint jobs come out as good as any 800 buck paint job. im pretty sure his paint will look just as good as mine if not better and i paid 900

Yikes, the doors look lumpier than Rosanne's thighs. Like said before, about 10-20 minutes per door with a long block sander and a touch of body filler would have made those nice and flat, instead of having the rollercoaster bunny hops down the sides.

Admittedly though, it's shinier than I thought it would be. But I'd personally let the car rot before I put a roller paint job on my car lol. Personally think it makes the car look worse IMHO, no offense meant.

Maybe you'll prove me wrong in the end when you get some daytime shots of it washed up though.....

damn dude, this is turning out to look pretty good. me personally would have taken the car apart to paint it, but thats just me. i'm eventually going to paint my 3gee in my auto body class. i'm going to see how i do with my new front bumper to start with. if that comes out looking spiffy, i'll go ahead and fix the body some and repaint the whole car. i'm probably going to go with the same color it already is, just for ease of blending it in and not having to worry about door sills and stuff. anyway, props to your work!
