I tried getting under the car to replace the cat, but the jack didn't give me enought height to get the jack stands under there. I put it to its max height and it was about an inch or so shy for clearence for the stands. Its a 2 ton capacity jack with "standard" (I suppose) jack stands.

Any recommendations for a new jack, or do stands come in variable sizes?

thats werid....anyways you should get a nice hydrolic jack...thoes cut your time in half....i hate the stock jacks now.....i just put the jack under the tow link and jack up the whole front side of the car and put the jack stands just to make sure the car does not fall or anything bad when im underder. make sure its in a level garage or something like that

It all depends how good is your jack. some jacks that cost 19.99 are just pure crap. I like using 3 ton jacks with a lot of hight.

Were you useing the tow hook in front of the car or the jackpoints on the side? You can get more height out of it if you jack each side up.

Umm. Put a brick or block of wood underneath the jack?

i had the sameproblem the jacks i had wouldnt get the car high enough to fit the jackstands, i just used a peice of wood to give it a little more height. just remember kids NEVER go under a car being held up by blocks of wood. allways use jackstands (hell i dont feel safe being under a car with just jacks non the less haveing blocks with that)

I use COMPOSITE PLASTIC drive on ramps.

They rated to 2,000 LBS per ramp

Like $25 for a set @ walmart and alot safer

Good luck on the cat.
I'm Replacing my Cat, and Cat Back Tomorrow also

nah, I got a low-profile hydraulic jack from wal mart. it was only ~$25
I just keep it in my trunk at all times, way more useful than an effing bottle jack.

Its a floor jack, "team mechanix", was probly about $20. Its parked on a very slight incline, facing upward in the garage. Can't get it in further and totally level cuz of crap everywhere. I could barely get the jack under the tow ring in its current position.
I'll take a look at those low profile jacks at walmart tomorrow.

yeah i got a set of those, except i got them at kmart (employe discount!)
there called like ryno ramps? or sometihng they seem to be just as good as metel ones just weight alot less. and the only problem i have had with them is backing down they like to shoot out (shot them like 25 feet out from under my car one day backing off of them) but yeah i recomend those things they work great

You could always run over a piece of wood so its under your wheel. that should give you enough room to get a jack under the jacking points. Most of those 2 ton jacks go about 21" there listed as. if you do have to boost a jack I try and put the wood under the jack so it has less chance to slip out. Most jacks kinda pull out as they go up.

got a low profile, 3-ton, 3 1/3 - 17.xx in lift from walmart.... $70 after taxes -.-

can anyone who has one of the low profile ones tell me the maker/model info? i'd like to get one cheaper, especially since this was the one one they had on shelf, and is obviously a 'use and return' item.

jonrichert

yeah the one i bought is made by "Big Red Jacks", i believe it's a 2-1/2 ton, and ~14" max lift. was under 30$cdn so i'm sure you can find a better deal if you shop around.

the one i already have is a 5 5/16' - 13'
this (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200326598_200326598) is the one i got, except the box only pictured the jack and no 'box contents' listing. it had better include the stands for the price i paid. its re-inforced steel also makes it a zillion lbs
it would've been nice if they had this one (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200305245&R=200305245) in the store. the only 5' they had only had a 13' max height.
