well i went to the junk yard looking for a cylinder head and some other stuff yesterday. i saw the car that i was lookin at still had the front bumper cover. so today i went and checked it out. looked pretty clean, not too scarred up. so i got it for $15. doesnt have lights or the styrefoam piece that goes behind it but oh well, mines still good on my car. and the lights, i can either just get some new ones or make some lenses to make the 86-87 ones fit. anyway, i have since washed the bumper cover and will take it to my auto body class to start fixing up. it matches my rear bumper too so thats good. i was thinking of putting it on the car already, but i kinda want to wait and repaint it. i dunno, it'd be easy to put on.

awesome find dude,,, and no paint needed, unless you want to redo the moulding. YOu never know what you are going to find in these yards, check them at least every payday....we just got a new one here, computerized and look up the car and it tells you exactley where it is, how many, etc. . its call pickapart. they advertise on tv any four cyl engine for 108 dollars. wouldnt that be sweet to get B18 for a hundred bucks.. or A22, hell they had a intregra there that was not checked in yet that has the front bumper everybody wants, I could not walk that day cuz of back but I wanted to see it, looks just like a acccod four door hatchback..

well i the body shop i went to a few years back put the 88-89 bumper on, not the correct 86-87 one. thats one reason i decided to get this one. also, my original one was messed up on the edges when i got it, and this one i just got i dont have to do much work to it to make it look good. not that anyone would care, but i was thinking about getting the european chrome trim piece that goes where the top of the bumper meets the body. most likely i wont because i havent seen one available. but yeah. anyway, i'm going to see if i can start working on this here at my house and do some of it at school. i found the correct paint to match my car in spray can type. i might check that out and see how it turns out on a test piece. i dont know how much the paint would be if i ordered it, but probably just as cheap as rattle can. i should just ask my teacher what he thinks before i decided on paint. i will probably start sanding on it and stuff to get it ready. also, i want to sand down the side trim and rear bumper too if i have enough money for paint. any rubber type coatings any of y'all could recommend? this would be for the black parts of the bumper and trim.

Spray Max Satin Black Trim Paint Part Number KWA 680 602.

Rattle can trim paint, but it's good shit. I've used it on a few things with great results. Looks great on the door pillars, mirrors, and wiper arms. Get some plastic adhesion promotor to spray on the bumper trim and side trim before you spray on any paint. All this should be available at any auto paint supply store.

you should mold a teg lip on it....then fiberglass it...make it look like it came like that .....that was my idea....

HondaBoy
10-28-2006, 02:42 PM
i was actually thinking that myself. but i think i'm just going to bolt on the intergra lip spoiler instead. the 3gee is my daily driver so molding the bumpers is not something i want to do. i see my friends cars that are done, but start cracking and whatnot even when good work is done. i also had an idea a long time ago to mold a prelude rear onto my accord. so i was thinking buy the trunk lid, tail lights, and rear quarter panel ends to weld and mold to my car. anyway, here's some old scetches i made. minus the front end, that is what i was planning on doing.

well i've started working on it. used the DA sander to scuff up what was already there. i'm going to smooth the black trim instead of it having a textured finish. and i'm trying to decide if i want to paint the very top of the bumper cover black, to make it look more like the 86-87 sedan bumpers. anyway, its turning out pretty nice so far and going pretty easy. need to fix a few parts of it with the plastic welder, but that will be a snap. i'll post up some pix next week or so of its progress.

HondaBoy

so what do y'all think. i myself like the 86-87 sedan bumper, but i have the 88-89 in the rear. so pretty much i want it to look more correct like the 86-87 bumper. so my idea is paint the top portion black along with the trim piece thats supposed to be black on the 88-89 bumper. would that look goood? i think it would but i'm not sure. if not, i may just paint it body color along with the bottom portion of the bumper. anyway, i'm going to keep working on it next week in class. hopefully i can order the paint and get it installed within a few weeks.

well i got to work on the bumper at school. i filled in the holes where the license plate screwed onto with the plastic welder. looks good. i have the plate mount that goes under the bumper, so i have that covered. also, i think i'm going to make a lip for the new bumper. but that might not come till after i have the new bumper painted and installed.

nah, i'm still working on it. i need to paint it and install it still. also, i'm thinking of filling the line between the black trim and the top of the bumper that is painted so it looks like the 86-87 bumper somewhat. if its not too difficult i'll do it but i dunno yet.

here's a few pix i just took with the license plates holes filled.

yeah, i think it will be. i just need to get a price on some paint and then i'll see whats up. i'll probably order enough to do the front and rear bumpers. i'm thinking of putting the side skirts on when i paint the bumper. probably so if i decide to put a lip on.

no, i used a plastic welder. looks like a soldering iron kinda, but you melt plastic not solder.

RamThis
12-01-2006, 12:12 AM
Nice deal with the plastic welder. I do somethign similar but I use a soldering gun and plastic scraps. I will be filling my license plate holes too when I go get my new bumpers. Looks so much cleaner that way, glad you decided to do that too. I dont care bout the "law" on front plates, when I paint a car, the front plate goes, period. You only need one in the back as that's the end they are at when they pull you over anyways, the jerks LOL. I have, though, gotten a ticket about seven years ago for no front plate on my race truck. I got pulled over again maybe two years ago in the same truck, but luck have it, I had JUST gotten new plates for the truck, and the one that should have been on the front, was setting in my passenger seat. Cop asked me why I had no front plate (excuse to pull over a rally striped race truck looking for other infractions). I picked up the plate and showed it to him and said the bracket got stolen with my old plate so I ordered new ones and havent gotten the new bracket yet for the front. He was satisified and let me go on my way. Now I try to keep the extra plate in the car handy JIC lol.

Also for the paint, if you use DuPont Chroma Base and Chroma Clear paints, you dont need to add anything else as a "plastisizer", according to my DuPont retailer. They say it's flexible enough that light to moderate bumps wont crack the clear in the formulation right from the can. Anything hard enough to crack the clear will damage the plastic too and the bumper is going to need to be replaced anyway.

Also before you prime it, make sure you use an adhesion promoter!!

HondaBoy

i have my front plate mounted under the bumper with the metal mount that came on the car. thats how i'm going to have mine mounted in the front. that was the main reason for going ahead and filling the screw holes. i have an idea of what i'm going to do for a front lip. i will use the top black plastic portion of the old bumper. i thought to cut it off, flip it over and mount it like that under the bumper. its about the same height as the lip thing that is on the rear bumper. so pretty much i'm going to try and match it more or less. as i said i'd cut the top piece off the old bumper. then i'd shorten it some to be the same width as the lower edge of the bumper. anyways, i think this may look pretty good and looks original. i remember someone did something similar. i'll try and find the pix of that.

HondaBoy

the old bumper is going to be used to make a lip for the new one. the top black piece you can see in the pic is going to be cut off, shortened in the middle and mounted upside down to look similar to the rear lip.
