View Full Version : How to remove the oil filter adapter?

After many months, and a renewed interest in getting my hands dirty, I've tracked my multi-year long oil leak to the oil filter adapter gasket. Now my question is how the heck do I remove it?

I can see it up there when I'm underneath doing an oil change, and from above when looking down through the fuel lines(?), but I can't figure out the best way to get to it. From what I can tell, I either need to pull the driver side axel to make space, or remove the fuel lines to go in above. Has anyone else tried this? What's the best, easiest way?

I found pictures of it in this thread (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55904&page=2), but nothing on how he got it off. In this thread (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30946), he had the head off. I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

I figured that part out from the shop manual. Call me an idiot if I'm being one, but I'm looking for the 'right' way to get to those 3 ten mm bolts.

I just finished that God awful job on my family's '88 LXi. If you have an LXi, take the air box off and you'll have pretty easy access to the bolts from up top. If not, then you'll need a long extension, and possibly someone to hold it up from the top so it doesn't twist on you when you turn it. I got the first two out that way until I found a post on this BB about removing the air box.

If you are carburated, the job is more difficult. You will need a large wrench to remove the oil pressure sender. Then just take out the 3 10mm bolts holding the base to the block. There is no space to go in from the top, so you will be doing it all from the bottom. If you are EFI, its much simpler justlike Riverman described. My accord is carbed and was not fun at all.

Didn't think of the airbox! It is EFI so I guess I'm in luck. I'll take a look tomorrow and see what I find.

Thanks

If the head was coming off in the near future, I'd do it then. But it's been dripping for close to 3 years now and it's not getting any better. I'm getting sick of the oils spots in the drive way.

It hurts my pride ;)

I know the feeling all too well < I still have two spots but att least it isnt dripping right on the exhaust at the red lights. that I could not tolerate anymore, besides hating that smell, it was embarrassing.
Now I just have a small leak from the head gasket, something did not seal on the Rt front corner. Im told there was an o ring there but I never saw one. Once you replace that one under the oil filter, another one will appear somewhere else!!!!!@#%&@#

You have to get a new gasket, kind of figure-8 shaped, from Honda. I also got a new pressure switch, cause once you're in there you might as well replace everything. Alsooooooo, if you get any kind of heavy resistance from the mounting bolts, back off and put some penetrating oil on them. Break one of those off and you are fucked.

Can someone point me in the right direction on Majestic website where to get the oil filter base plate gasket? Mine is leaking & needs replaced. Local Honda stealer isn't an option for me. Thanks

I got #'s 10-14, thinking that a new spring and valve would be a good idea as long as I was in there. Also got 3 of # 31 (bolt). If you tear up a head getting them off, or lose one, it's cheap insurance. Remember what I said about breaking off a bolt...I don't know how you'd get in there to get a busted one out and retap.

Ordered #10-13 & received it today. I paid just as much for shipping & handling than for parts. :violin: Looks like this is what I'll be replacing this weekend. Hopefully it isn't to bad of a job.
