While I know there are aftermarket options out there, I would like to use an OEM radio as my upgrade. I currently have a 97 Integra CD player in my car... but I want MP3 playback capability. I know our cars are made for single din players... but I have that extra, lower storage compartment below my current stereo. I was thinking, that it might be possible to somehow get a stereo to fit in there. I would then just put a pocket/sleeve where the oem radio used to be. Any ideas or input here?
Here is the radio that i was talking about:

I'm also willing to use another (Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, mazda, GM, Ford, etc) OEM radio from another car manufacturer that is a single din fit.... but i don't know of any single din stock MP3 players.

Ummm it’s from a 2005 SPECIAL EDITION Civic :). There was one on ebay not too long ago… has a Honda badge on it too!
If Honda made another din style mp3 player I would be all over it, but this is the only one that I know of. I also wanted to keep it Honda, but whatever. Maybe I’ll just get a scion stereo put in my car :O.
Here are a few links to the SE MP3 stereo;)

Extending the wires is no problem, luckily they make reverse harnesses for quite a few factory stereo’s. And they make antenna extensions too.. but I wont need that cuz my factory one is useless… it broke! I have an aftermarket one already :).

My biggest issue is figuring out how to mount the stereo in there. Maybe I’ll just get lazy and try to find an OEM looking ‘aftermarket’ single din stereo.

hmmm... that might just be the easiest way to go about getting mp3 playback...

i say you save the money an get a real deck($150) gets you a real nice aftermarket deck...the honda decks are way underpowered i think for the lx-i its like 10 wats per channel

Here’s the reason why I do not want an aftermarket stereo.
Last year my dad bought an aftermarket CASSETTE player for his other car, a Corolla, and living in the neighborhood that we live in… I kept telling him to remove the faceplate to prevent thiefs from trying to steal the stereo and damaging his car. Well my dad is not very good at remember thing of this matter… so months later someone broke one of his windows in the middle of the night and attempted to steal the radio. They managed to break the window, damage the dash and lastly damage what they were attempting to steal- the radio. So that put an end to his aftermarket stereo carreer. And since he shares the accord with me, it needs a stock or stock looking stereo. Besides it’s nice to not have to worry about having to remove the faceplate every time your away from your car for a while. But like I said if I can find a stock looking stereo that doesn’t look completely aftermarket, I’m all for it. At the moment the Accord is rocking a 97 Integra CD player, but with no mp3 playback…. It does sound way better than the stock accord radio, that’s for sure! I’m not looking for anything major. Hell I’m putting Jensen speakers in the front and some Pioneer 6x9 speakers in the back that I got for free. I’m not looking for an awesome sound system… just something that I can hear :).

yeah my car also got broken into (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55882) smart me didnt evey bother to take of the faceplate...i walways left it on. once i had left my door unlocked for 3 days and nothing happen....the day i close all my windows and doors this happens...it was only 15-20ft away from my house. thats why i would rather invest in a cheap alarm that protect your car than to try to get a silver double din stereo that wont look OEM... you got to talk to frantik he has a EQ that he has bypassed and hooked up his Ipod on his stock stereo. and it does not sound bad...it will sound even better on the teg or prelude stereo

you can fit it no problem. there will be alot of fiberglass epoxy work to get it to look nice and fit properly.

kind of like this....

that looks pretty good, wouldnt the ash tray and lighter get in the way of the view though? i think it looks better in a 3gee than a 4g cause the 4g is completly vertical and the 3gee one is on a angle :)

i didn't bypass the eq, i just added an input before the eq and a switch to switch between the headunit and the ipod. :)

i was gonna suggest the same thing and just get a head unit with a line in

and a newer stereo is going to stand out in an old car, especially if it's all silver and shit and might still be mistaken for an aftermarket deck :dunno:

While that could happene... (I would hope that) the fact that it is an OEM radio would hopefully prevent them from damaging the dash. I only posted that silver one because it's seemingly the only Din style (and not molded into the dash) radio that Honda offers. Anyhow, I will most likely just add that MP3 CD player add-on to my current 97 Integra unit.

Actually its angled just right so you can look at it from the driver and pasanger seats. The ashtray an lighter in no way block the view. The fourth gen would be difficult to see since it would be angled to low and would look dim from the driver and pasanger positions.

I don't have any recent pics... but you can go here (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showpost.php?p=584373&postcount=15) to see the pics of when when i first got it in January. It'll be up for sale once I get the new radio in... so that'd be sometime next week.

SOLD :). I don't deal with the post office anymore cuz they are a bunch of morons... so FedEx is what I've been using for years now. FedEx is quoting $10.86.. let just make it $30shipped?

*oh and no code needed :)

lol.. I dont know the exact figures... but it seems more powerful (and better sounding) than the stock cassette one that was in the Accord from 89.

*** I'm off to bed... I'll post up pics of when I get the new stereo installed and ghettogeddy I'll shoot you a PM once the Acura stereo is packed up and ready to ship.

We'll I've had the stereos for a while now, I have been unable to install it due to the lack the seller sending me the stereo cage & radio bezel. But have tested it... works good
Also, my brother wanted the Acura stereo... If he still does then obviously, family comes first (at least that is the case for me). I'll ask him tonight if he still wants it, if not it's still all yours :).

gsus
12-13-2006, 03:39 PM
Well, he changed his mind. It’s all yours if you still want it? Otherwise I’ll put it in the FS section.

I got the cage and radio in (& installed), It sounds louder and better already (even with the blown stock speakers). I was originally planning on doing a full Jensen setup in the accord last year.. but as I mentioned in an earlier post, I got some pioneer 6x9’s with my donor car (for my MR2) that I’m putting in the accord. I’ll be getting some 5¼” pioneers for the front now too, cuz the 6½” Jensen’s that I bought last year were too big. So if anyone is interested in those, I’m selling them for $20, plus shipping :).
