So the element isnt the nicest looking car out there but a 3.2l twin turbo v6 rwd build by HONDA? Where do i sign for one lol seriously i would not care that the 500hp came in the form of an element it would be the ultimate sleeper.

My brother has an 03' element... we've been toying with trying to fit the 3.5 v6 into it... he saw this and freaked! I'm thinking engine swap for his element REAL soon!

its not much to look at, but that engine is AWSOME! 500hp from a 3.2L V6?

500 hp doesn't seem like something most "kids" can afford. i think the civic's popularity, as was noted in the article, was due mostly to the price point.

I'm impressed with the engineering that went into it, but disappointed in the choice of vehicle. Maybe they are just trying to bring the Japanese wagon scene to the US though?

I dont like the choice of vehicle either, its kind of like a minivan and no one wants a hooked up van, lol.

I have a feeling that the P/W ratio, wheelbase, braking, and suspension on a very shitty vertically unballanced design isn't going to make for a winning vehicle in the Formula-D series.
When it comes to professional drift vechiles, balance and skill is everything. That's why you still see underpowered Corollas (I think the highest grossing HP during last years season was like what, 210-sumodd HP?) keeping up with supercharged Vipers decently.
Shit, I'm surprised there aren't any Lotus Elise/Exige(S) in competition yet. Now THAT would be the ultimate project for Formula D.
E
yes balance is the key grasshopper lol , seriously it is and being that fin thing is soo tall i cant see it taking a banked drift , and yes the AE85 and 86's keep up with the rest pretyy good IMO it is because they understand weight transfer and balance very well, have you ever trid with one of those? i cant compare a 85 or 86 hatch to our accord hatch b/c of the weight distribution is more toward the front in our 3g's (obiviously b/c of the drivetrain) and plus i believe our accords have a 3" wider wheel base stock than a 85 or 86. they are very finikey cars and they really dont require anything above 250 which would end up in constant doughnuts. the Mopar viper however i think is kinda a cheat b/c it allready got high HP and the thing was basically designed to compete in the GT series. and yes id like to see a lotus compete but then again why dont u see a MR-2 compete often, the MR's from experiance drive like go carts and were designed based on it too, alltho i wouldnt mind seeing someone try to regularly compete with one , plus the lotus has too high of a price tag.
and also "Thet car loocks like Oldmobile, something for old ppl to go shoping."

ive seen american cars drift liek bubba smith who used a el camino which is the same chassis believe it or not as my olds, still tho my olds only had a stage 2 preformance buil on the 2004-r tranny and ive only dropped in a stock 1969 oldsmobile 350Ci in there and the car does mid to low 14's
still is a box and does burn up rear tires all over the place on the street
however i can say the same for the S14 that i drive with my friends on a drifting team here in NJ, but sadily im getting out of drifting b/c everyons doing it and its becomming annoying when u have a kid in a chevy corsica "drifting" hence my leave of 4 wheels to 2 wheels
but really honda has to keep up with the the other companys, and they havent had anything other than a FF drivetrain other than the s2000 and i dotn even know if thier truck is Rwd.
sorry for the long post

Well on the one hand it does seem like a fairly impractical choice, but on the other hand, it was built by Honda Engineering, so it's not like we can say they don't know what they're doing.

I'm interested to see how this plays out in competition, if it makes it.

wood paneling and all

yeah...the funny thing is that it has leather seats....electric all the way around and a preminum sound system...i think he paid like 400 bucks...nothing wrong with it....it just sucks up alot of gas since its a v8.....it has hella torque too...we took it to a baseball game...and there was a huge line to get in... a guy next to us was like "wow its nice to see these things on the road. I had one in high school and we would fit 8-9 ppl from the baseball and football team" we just started laughing...since we had 6 ppl in the car...lol

ha thx CKE yah there is potental with domestics , i mean even 240 guys are putting LS1's in those things which is an insane power to weight raito , i was brought up at the race track (englishtown raceway park NJ ) and ive allways been a drag racer at heart ( god i love the smell of nito methane  ) but i also like drifting and auto x but i have to say they only came b/c of Rally. but yah i hear it on both sides of the spectrum one from the olds crowd and another from here, its sad that we all cant get along and stop making a whole deal outta shit. and i think what ur talking about the night rider knockoff might be a 240 that has the front end converted to a firebird's. i mean my olds had with the stock 307 Ci only 180 Hp and 255 ft/lb of torque (pathetic by v-8's go) but olds engines have been known for a shit load of torque , i mean its effortless to kick the rear out on my olds, that was only the stock engine the new 350 has nearly 2x of that or possably more. thast one thing that dissappoints me i wish there was a big aftermarket for the 3gees. as far as the F$F3 goes it was ok , but now were gonna have a bunch of retards taking apart good part matching cars liek that to put in a nissan engine to me thast wrong

sorry for another long post

they were better off taking a fit, making it awd with a turbo k24

speedpenguin
11-22-2006, 07:25 PM
I think the idea is that they could just use the stock drivetrain and disable the AWD.

Yeah it's extremely... Unique. But I think that was the idea.

Tecknixia
11-24-2006, 04:31 AM
The stock Element's inline four engine and RealTime AWD drivetrain just won't cut it for drifting, so the Honda R&D team tossed it out entirely.

Once a gear is selected, the V6's 500 turbocharged ponies are sent down the Driveshaft Shop custom prop shaft and are evenly split up in the Torsen 2R LSD before being sent on their way to the rear wheels via the Driveshaft Shop custom half shafts.
