I have an '86 LX-i hatchback and was wondering what size speakers are currently in the doors and rear and if I can go bigger without much trouble (I'd like to do the install myself).

Thanks,

James

if youre handy and can get a hold of 6x9 speaker pods from an 88-89 LXi, you can squeeze those back there with some modification. i have 6.5 pioneers in front and 6x9 pioneers in the back

Well it looks like i'm going to have to at least replace the speakers in the back now, I installed my new head unit today, cranked it, and managed to blow out the right rear speaker.

I have two 6" pioneers as well as two pioneer 6x9's in my rear deck.... two 5" pioneers and two power acoustic 1" tweeters in the front.... two 10" pioneers in a sealed box powered by a fosgate punch.... all controled by a Sony CDX-M620... If I were you I would go for some 6 1/2's in the rear and some 5 1/2's in the front... go with 2 or 3 ways.... kenwood and pioneers or alpine...

I think I may be going with pioneers just because that's what the new head unit is. Does anyone think that a place like circuit city would have a problem with me bringing in my old speakers and mounts to match the holes up or won't mounting holes be a problem?

the infinities run about $200 a set, but are well worth it

the mounting will NOT be a problem, with any 6.5 speaker you get

That's good to here, I was getting a little worried when I saw that Crutchfield.com listed only about 3 6.5" speakers as being compatible with our cars.

ya... there is a bit of modifying you have to do to the baskets, but it's a 5 minute job, and it's nothing that has to be perfect

BTW, the infinities are extremely CLEAR sounding, so if you want boomy bass out of the stock hole speakers, used something else... your best bet for good deep bass is a seperate sub, though

Ended up putting 6.5 Infinities in the front and 6.5 polks in the rear.

nice choice. the true test of speakers is how loud, crisp, and clear they are. polks and infinities are nice

Sounds really nice, and as soon as my gf stops bitching about the money I spent on those I'm going to have to figure out what where and how to put and amp and subs in.

Holy shit this thread is old. I've long since replaced this setup with much better equipment.
