HERE'S A SNEAK PEAK AT THE MAP LIGHT LED CIRCUIT BOARD I WILL BE PUTTING INTO PRODUCTION. THERE WILL BE MORE WHITE LED'S OF COURSE. I WILL PROBABLY PUT 8 IN EACH SIDE.

ALSO, THIS IS BASICALLY HOW I WILL BE DOING THE TAIL LIGHTS EXCEPT WITH 10MM WHITE LED'S...BWA BWA BWA!

ALSO, THIS IS BASICALLY HOW I WILL BE DOING THE TAIL LIGHTS EXCEPT WITH 10MM WHITE LED'S...BWA BWA BWA! I WILL BE PUTTING PROBABLY 4 ROWS IN EACH HOUSING WITH A TOTAL OF 50 OR SO LEDS EACH HOUSING. I USED RED 5MM DIFFUSED LEDS FOR THIS PROTOTYPE SINCE THEY ARE CHEAP AS HELL TO BUY.

After the circuit boards are made you will mount them in the housings and just plug and play!

oh my that would be totally awesome but do leds burn out???

and how would we do the plugging cause my car has twist in bulbs for tails

and just a question u might know can i just paint my signals on the back red or do i actually have to take out the orange part and if i have to do that can u just make leds that go in there? lol

I don't think 5mm/10mm LEDs will cut it for tail light applications. They're not bright enough for use in taillights. OEM manufacturers use higher power LEDs like SuperFlux LEDs for tail lights. They're more expensive but much better for automotive use. You get what you pay for.

To drive the LEDs, I would suggest using a PWM (Pulse Width Modulator) to drive the LEDs. It's much more energy efficient and it's easier for dimming.

No, 10mm white will be sufficient. Thanks though!

Just trying to save you some time and money....

Maybe it's just me but I don't like to play with my safety to save a few bucks by ghetto rigging some taillights.

Dude, bitesize knows what he is doing. If you dont like the lights thats cool, but you dont have to post your opions in his thread.

The pictures above are some what ghetto rigged, but that is because it is my prototype breadboard and not my actual circuit board I will be using.

Well isn't that what a forum is for and isn't that why he posted it?

I'm not trying to knock on your idea Bitesize. I'm just providing advice from experience.

If you do it your way you run into many problems. Sure it looks fine on a little breadboard in the dark but try taking it out into broad daylight with the sun shining right at it. Then when you multiply what you have by 50 you run into other problems such as supplying power and getting an even lighting scheme. Not all LEDs are created equal; some will light brighter than others even under the same conditions.

It takes more than just a couple red LEDs to make a LED taillight. When someone plows into the back of your car because they can't see your brakelights then don't wonder why. But then again, who am I to say anything? You learn from experience right?

Just relax guys, instead of just telling him he's ghetto rigging it explain your comment and provide information that backs it up. I agree that there are better ways and better LED's to use. We all learn from trial and error, and hopefully from others mistakes. I think the best thing would be to just point him to HIDPlanet's forums:

I try to be nice and help everyone out, since no one makes aftermarket stuff, and all I get is criticism. Maybe I'll just make my self led tails and no one else will have them.

No one else here is bashing what your doing, I think it's awsome that your providing this service to the 3geez community, but there is nothing wrong with checking out what others have done and learning from there mistakes. When you are doing a large array power and equal lighting become an issue. The LED's you are using may be bright enough but you won't know till you try, so of course go for it, like you said it's a prototype.

That one guy on preludepower made some, i'm basing my project on that. He used 5mm so i'm using 10mm to make them even brighter and better.

I'm planning to do the same too. Let me steal your ideas :D

$30 shipped for the map light. I don't even have a clue how hard and how long the tail lights will take me.

lol, k just checking, and how would the led's fit in the taillights, are we gonna have to take them apart?

BITESIZE
11-28-2006, 12:39 PM
You will mount them inside of the housings.

BITESIZE
11-28-2006, 12:52 PM
I have them all soldered to a single circuit board. All the colors and sizes I have, except the 5mm U.V. Leds. They haven't arrived yet.

Camera doesn't do any justice. The led's are so bright if you put the camera so its in the middle, the led's will overpower the camera and you will just see a huge glare.
