View Full Version : Ok, to shave or not to shave door trims....

I've been toying with the idea of shaving the door trims. I like a clean, smooth looking car and even though I planned on body-matching the trim, I'm wondering if doing away with the trim and channels and making the doors smooth would look good or not. I'm basically wondering if it will take the car so far into the realm of smooth it will almost be boring, yet I dont like the cluttered look of the current trim. I also thought about makign the doors smooth and finding some clean, rounded over simple trim like on my 96 Integra to put down the sides to keep something on the sides breaking up the panels, but look cleaner and less cluttered. I guess I could go ahead and smooth it out and if I thought it needed something later, it would be easy enough to add some clean style of trim then.....

So, any good pics of a 3Gee with the side trims shaved smooth??

I think without a kit the missing trim looks a little weird since it's still on the bumpers, so unless your going to put a kit on, just paint the trim to match.

Shaving the side moldings is a bit tricky on these cars. The bottom half of the panels sticks out a tad bit further than the top half, making a truly flush look a bit tricky. This is what I did for my car instead:

Looks very clean and still has the body lines so the sides don't look naked. And yes, you can use filler...but not just ordinary bondo...use Duraglass or Bondo fiberglass jelly. Make sure you strip the area to be filled down to the bare metal. Use a good electric or air sander...preferably the longboard kind. Don't weld any sort of metal cus the heat from the welder will warp the body metal and you'd end up with a big mess.

That looks awesome Iceman. If and when I paint the car, I may look into doing something similar

i personally like the trim cus it makes it look more oldschool, which is why i like the 3g accord. i wouldn't even paint it to match :thumbdn:. but i believe jiggas accord is the best one that has been shaved just look his up. someone did a how to also i don't know if it's still around but i remember it like a year ago.

yesterday i was thinking about this when i was driving...how about if you paint it with like black car paint...or just spray some clear over it so it looks shinny as the rest of the paint job

Ice that's perfect!! I did not notice the surfaces were uneven so that makes a perfect place to do a body line like you did, small, clean, and stylish. I use Dyna-Glass so no problems there, plus I planned to use some of the old trim holes to put some studs in to give the filler some more "grip" since I'm cheating and not welding a panel over the opening. Thanks all for the great pics, keep em coming I like seeing different ideas to work off of.

ok, now what iceman did looks very clean with that bottom line kept. i dont think it looks good completely smooth though, kinda strange and not really flowing with the car's lines. if i was going to fill the trim channels on the door, i would probably make a patch piece from metal, weld it in, then use filler as needed.

Nice LM, good chop. Keep in mind though I am painting the bumpers body color too, Im not keeping the black stripe on them. So maybe with the bumpers done as well it would look more even. I admit it does need something down the sides now that I look at it, but I dont like the current trim really. The small step in Ice's car is perfect, or a really small, clean, rounded, painted to match trim stuck on a flat surface like on my Integra would both work.

Can you blue out the bump strips on the bumpers to see what that would look like with the deleted trim??

I love it! Funny thing is, you chose a set of rims almost exactly like what I was wanting to get!! Just a bit too big though lol.

The car with the shaved door trims looks kinda naked with the stock rims, but with a set of aftermarket rims, it changes the whole look. I think I if I do this, I'm going to do it similar to Iceman's and leave a small stepped line just to break up the panel, that's probably the idea I've like the best so far.

And of course, LM's rim chop lol.

And ddude, yeah I thought about that too, but I'm afraid if one of the handles break then I have to bust out the filler and ruin the paintjob to fix a handle. Cool idea but unfortunately not practical.

And Bullard, I like your design as well. Only thing I'd change about yours is to blend in the wheel well lip down into the lower portion of the panels instead of leaving the cutout for the small trim pieces. Your's is kinda my second runner up idea, I just gotta sit down with the car in front of me and get a better idea of where I'm going with this.

Why cant I just leave it alone!!!! LOL

The more I look at Bullards, the more I like it, plus the easy factor really says alot lol. Hmmmmmm.....

LM, man, that's tuckin some tire LOL. I'd have to do some MAJOR sus mods to fit those meats!! Can you make it lowered a bit, like it was 2" lower, with those first dark grey rims with the polishe lip, but maybe look like about a 15-16" rim with a bit higher profile tire? (sporty look basically)

That's the direction it's going. Hope to get it up and running in a couple or so months time. With the weather delays, and the odd thing of job hunting taking up more time than actually having a job, it's going slow lol. The week I spent doing nothing much more than working on the sunroof and such did boost me ahead a bit time wise though. I'm not sure how much later I will be able to do the rims/tires and a drop though.

IMO if you are gonna do the sides fully shaved, get 86-87 front and rear bumpers. The black trim on those don't protrude like the 88-89 ones. All you have to do is fill in the line grooves that separate the black part and the painted part of the bumpers and you'll have completely smooth looking bumpers to match the sides after painting the whole car all one color. Look at 86-87 bumpers and you'll see what I mean. This was my original idea before I decided to do a kit on my car.
