What's your opinion on synthetic oils?

I'm due for an oil change and Iv'e never used synthetic oil and I would like to know if you think it has any benifits over natual oil?

using synthetic any anything that is not new or at least a complete rebuild will most likely cause major oil leaks lol i use a synthetic blend and haven't seemed to start leaking at all

sysntheric oil are good for newer engines or newly build engines.
if you have a lot of miles i would stick with regular oil.
my first car had 218K miles when i decided to go with synthetic, well it started to smoke after 30 miles of driving.
stick with regular oil, Mobil 10w40 is the way to go.

yeah apparently synthetics can get in places natural oils cant.. thats not a problem with new engines but with worn engines the oil may leak into areas with worn seals, piston rings, etc

I don't think these engines were designed for synthetic oils, but i could be wrong. I use Mobile 10w30 and seem to have no problems at all.

Well, the myth about syntetics that will make the engine leak are not that true. It seems that older syntetic oils would to that. The newer ones have additives that will make rubber expand a bit and not cause leaks.

The hatch's previous oner told me that he used syntetic oil (probably castrol Syntec Blend). I used Mobil-1 Syntetic without problem so far (the engine has close to 200k Miles). I switched the Civic to Syntetic when I bought it at 120k miles.

If the engine has a weak spot, it might make it worse. If a seal starts to leak, just replace it anyway. The rear seal is a bitch tough :(

The rear seal is a bitch though(

I had my mechanic replace the rear seal just as a precautionary measure when I got a new clutch. What a disaster. He used an aftermarket seal (like a $20 part) and it leaked. Out came the tranny and he tried again, but again he used an aftermarket seal. Still leaked. AGAIN out came the tranny...this time I said don't be a schmuck, use a Honda OEM seal. Then it was OK. I'd say, in this case particularly, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've got over 200,000 and I've run synthetic oil since I got the got car a little over a year ago and havent had any problems.
I'm running 10/30 Royal Purple

Yeah, I use nothing but Honda seals. I know they last past 120k miles so there's no chance to take on this side.

I use the cheapest possible oil in the proper viscosity grade. I do like diesel CL-4 oil because of the carbon dissolving additive package. It makes your engine super clean!

i'm a fan of mobil1 full synthetic, but i've lost a quart of oil in less than 1500 miles, and that scares me. sure, i could easily put in dyno oil the next time around, but i'd rather have that bit of a leak nagging at me until i replace it.

if it does the same as with my truck, it'll stop leaking after a few changes. my truck lost about a quart in 2000 miles over the first oil change. the second, it lost a quart over 3000 miles. i'm on my 5th with it, and so far, i've only lost about half a quart in 4500 miles.

I have a 1988 Honda accord Lxi, with 175,000 miles on it. Whats the best oil to put in the motor with the amount of miles I have? Is it better to use Honda oil, or can I use Mobil 1. Also what is the best Waite to use with our cars?

I use Mobile-1 and i have 146k miles. I would recommend using Mobile-1, it seems to be really good.

Depends on the how the climate is where you live. I use 20w-50 and have never had any problems.

As for the brand it has always been Valvoline VR-1, awsome oil IMO. But in my last oil change i switched over to Royal Purple, also an awsome oil.

i switched to synthetic on my accord (187k) and it stopped leaking oil completely and ran even better than before i got that crazy Q fully synthetic. it was a noticable improvement. before i was going through like a quart every couple months i know its not much but no leak is better than a little leak.

Thanks guys, I think ill try using Mobil 1 10W-30. Is changing the O-rings a hard thing to do? I mean will mechanics charge an arm and a leg, or is it a easy thing for them?

depends. do you have oil leaks now? Synthetics tend to make oil leaks worse, but if the engine is in good condition with very little leakage etc, synthetics will be fine. I run dino 10w-30 oil

I think I have a small leak, I found one under my car two days ago. I'm not sure if its mine or if it was there before I parked lol. I haven't seen one after that one time.

I use Mobil one in my 1998 accord, seems to run damn good. I'm about to go and change my oil in about an hour! What a coincidence?!?! I also use a fram high mileage/long interval change oil filter. Remember this is on my 98 not my hatch lol. On my hatch I use the best money can buy.

i use castrol syntec blend, got about ten more pounds of oil pressure hot with it,have a couple of small leaks now,but it's not due to the oil, most of my gaskets and seals are new anyway. if you go to run sythentic, and find leaks, the solution is easy, fix the leak. if you put a new gasket in,it doesn't matter what kind of oil you run,it won't leak. i have to argue the full sythentic thing, full sythentic cuts friction, doesn't breakdown as fast, can handle higher heat, etc. what difference does it make if it's an older engine? engines work the same way inside as they always have, the pistons still go up and down, the crank still turns, the valves still open and close. the oil will give you the same benifits on an older engine as in a brand new one. fix the leaks and you are good to go. as a matter of fact, full sythentic is so good at reducing friction, you can't run it at first in a new or rebuilt engine, the engine will never break in. the only reason i don't run it,is the cost. when i get my new engine built,i will run castrol full sythentic from the time it's broken in.

I run full synthetic 5w-30 oil, comes in a blue gallon jug at Wal-Mart. I also put about 4 onces of Lucus oil stabilizer in. I don't buy into what Bob the oil guy says about it either.
