i was just looking at some options i have for materials to use in a manifold. i notice that mild steel is significantly cheaper then stainless steel. the problem is, i can get stainless steel piping, but the flanges are mild steel. is it possible to weld these together?

I believe it is possible but does take a skilled welder, and I think they have to have a tig. IMO it'd be best if you could get the flanges cut in stainless too, shouldn't cost too much and would be best.

You can weld virtually any steel to any steel, with any steel filler. But it looks stupid when the city guys weld stainless handrail with plain carbon wire and a bunch of rust lines appear.

After a conversation with Sam at BMCRACE, he says mild flanges to 304SS is the most common way of making manifolds. so you are on the right track. :)

ya main... it should weld up... with a decent and constant welder... lowes welders wont cut it... bring it to a fabricatore not just any welder/// a respected local welder...

sweet....how much would it cost to build one?

lol i added up the costs of everything, and it was like 366, for stainless pipes, and mild turbo flange and mild header flange. this includes the wastegate flanges too.

i didnt factor in a couple of other bends you would need (that my manifold has, and I think would be necessary) and I didnt factor in the tubing for wastegate to dump tube.

figure maybe $400+ shipping, but that is for a ram horn manifold. there are much more simple designs out there that would probably require less material.

for you guys that want to run stainless flanges, just remember that stainless flanges tend to warp and expand alot more than mild. Id just rock the mild with schedule 10 stainless and then brace the flanges to eachother to prevent cracks
