Get a volt meter and see what the battery is showing. If it's lower then 12volts, then you need a new battery. I just tested my alternator today with a gauge my dad bought, and i got 14.2 volts while running.

battery toasted..and get a new battery..cause the alternator is next if you continue to try to charge it...( bulging sides is a sure sign of plate warpage)..besides it's going to be cold as heck next week..and you don't want to be walking when it's like ten degrees outside!

my car cranks between 14.60 and 14.72 when running and with the new battery 12.60 to 12.72 not running, the old battery cranked like 10.45 when not running. so im pretty sure the battery was shot like i said i dont know how old it is but its been in the car since iv had it and its going on 3 years

I'm sure in a few days the voltage will beup a bit..store batteries tend to lay around and are not fully charged. But given the weather, I'd keep a voltmeter on it for a few days do be sure..you can also load it up by simulating a worst case, rear defroster, blower, wipers, high beams four ways and brakes on at 2000 rpm + you should have a minimum of 12.5, check the belt in a few days also, if it starts squealing when you startup. batteries are cheap comapred to tows, I keep a sears emergency jump in both cars, best $50 I've spent yet. not everybody is willing to give a needed boost these days. Since my wife tried to help out a stranger in a parking lot and the idiot hooked up backwards and blew the caddy alternator ($150 parts + my labor + a $75 tow) she's under strict orders to only use the sears jumper or keep driving. no opening the hood anymore for her. No doubt if a battery had exploded, the jerk would have tried to sue us too..

you shouldn't be getting 14.6 -14.7 V when it is running.
It should be no higher that 14.4V your alternator may be cooked. take it to autoparts store and let them put through a few test. let them measure the amps and load it puts out.
