View Full Version : I have an STD...

A Civic STD, that is! You've never heard of a Civic STD? I guess it's short for Standard, but in the owner's manual it says STD. It's the baser than base model, lower even than a DX. Comes standard with an asphalt-tearing 70HP, a smooth-shifting 4-speed manual, luxurious vinyl seats, no passenger side-view mirror for better aerodynamics, no tachometer (because real racers shift by feel anyway) and rubber bumpers for that sleeper look.

Long story short, it's in need of some mods! On the plus side, the condition is superb, better even than the Integra, I can't find a single rust spot anywhere! And of course most of the above problems can be corrected with a few trips to the junkyard. Everything but the power of course, that's going to take a bit of extra effort. But since curb weight is only 2127 pounds it's going to be pretty damn quick once I'm done with it. This car is actually optimal for me because except for the AC there is nothing on this car to slow it down unnecesarily, and it makes me feel a bit like a badass :D

Without further ado, my 1991 Civic STD.

Crashed it at the end of December. And the motor is gone. I've got a different build and a different goal in mind for this car.

And no I'd rather not. I need something small. We all know how potent a stripped EF Civic can be in the right hands.

The Civic STD was a really nice car back then. Really cheap and VERY functionnal. This makes a great commuter car.

Too bad they don't make cheap RELIABLE cars like these anymore.

speedpenguin
02-04-2007, 06:21 PM
Oh yeah since you're on, Carot, this car says Honda of Canada under the hood. Was this a special model or were all 4th gen hatches made in Canada? Or would you know?

Vtec or not, make sure to put a 1.8L in there and nothing less. I must say, that thing is in great condition. The civic "sexually transmitted disease" is rare, but I have herd of cases popping up all over the world  .

It's called an STD because no one wants it.

Except me...

And my engine plans are a secret right now except for a select few.

I would take it, gut it, put an LS motor in it, beef up the suspension, then track race it. SO how much did you pay for it?

Yeah it was a hard choice to make, but sometimes that's what you have to do.

Really, though, a rust-free Honda on the east coast is such a rarity that this is a much better choice. And EF hatches are pretty badass in a utilitarian sort of way. I'm happy with it.

the teg was 10x better IMO

Thanks dude, it really makes me feel good about this car lol.

I don't view either car as better, they were just different. The Integra was fast, and fairly comfortable, with lots of amenities, good for a street cruiser and bombing the twisties.

But if you want an extremely lightweight chassis with good handling to build from the ground up for performance only, you can't go much better than a 4th gen hatch. That's why these cars hold a special place in the heart of every road racer and autocrosser.

I paid $2425 for it BTW. Considering the condition and the fact that I got it from a dealer that's not bad at all. People were trying to sell these for like 3K in way worse condition.

That body is clean.

It's asking for a right side mirror, a EF9 front, and black molding with the red stripe.

And I think most of the hatches were made in Canada, my EK was.

speedpenguin
02-04-2007, 09:18 PM
The seats, the mirror, and the bumpers are the first on my list. I'll probably pull some Si bumpers from a junkyard, I don't have the budget for JDM stuff right now, and besides, it doesn't make the car go faster. :D

Some were made in Canada, some in the States and some in Japan

The engine build I have planned is really not going to be talked about on here. If you wanna talk on AIM that's another story.

It keeps snowing. I do wash it every time it snows to make sure the salt gets off the undercarriage and body, but I'm going to refrain from breaking out the claybar, detailer, wax, etc until it starts to warm up.

I went to the junkyard today... Every single 4th gen Civic over there (And there were over 10) had the passenger side mirror removed. :( On the plus side, there will be no shortage of rear disc brake setups for when I'm ready to swap.

Update on my car.

After it made an appearance at the Northeast meet last week, I've finally been motivated to get off my ass and start working on the car.

I set out today with my trusty socket wrench and screwdriver to take off the bumpers and refresh the mount points. I was also planning on scraping off any rust I could find and treating it with that rust treatment stuff.

Unfortunately, I had overslept by a lot today, and it turns out that starting any project at 3:30 when it gets dark at 5:00 is a bad idea. And of course there were screws that wouldn't come out. So today I accomplished a whole lot of nothing. Except of course, that I managed to actually get to the store for the supplies I need and I took these pictures with my new digital camera. Enjoy!

As she looks now.

http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee12/MyCivicProject/100_0028.jpg

I need to sand this down and apply more epoxy before I paint the whole thing.
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee12/MyCivicProject/100_0031.jpg

Any suggestions on what to do about these gaps? There's gaps between the headlights and the hood, and gaps between the bumpers and the fenders. Can I just remove the bumper covers and tweak the mount points or what? Has anyone run into this problem?
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee12/MyCivicProject/100_0029.jpg

I found this when I pulled off my right signal. I was wondering what that jangling noise was. I was also wondering where that wrench had got off to.
