This is a little dilemma, first, my tires say they support up to 45 psi of air pressure, then, many mechanical technical articles advice to use the right pressure according to the specific car, they say I should find this in the car manual, I have a Honda accord lx 1987 carb, I dont have the manual, I don't know what the correct pressure is for my car, I know the maximum pressure for my tires, 45, meanwhile I solve the dilemma, I am using 40psi.

What Should I do, considering correct tire pressure help gas mileage.

I am using BFGoodrich, 175r14

Thanks

I run 35psi in my tires, and it seems perfect... Id say that 40 was a little on the high side.. depends on your roads I guess.

use what the tire says.

NEVER EVER run max tire recomended pressure.
it is MAX pressure that tire can take with a full load. so if your tires inflated to 45 psi and you put full load on your car, they already over stressed and start wearing out a lot faster.

the stock tire pressure for our accord is 28psi for stock tire size. if you do a lot of high speed driving honda recomends bumping by 2-4 psi. I run 32psi on my tires. this way the tire stays some what soft to absorb some small bumps. otherwise with high pressure your suspension will absorb all the bumps and wear out a lot faster.

the higher the tire pressure you get a lot ruffer ride, tires will wear out a lot faster and your suspention won't last long.

the lower the tire pressure (stock tire pressure) the car will right smoother, and it will wear out a lot slower.

I have mine at 32psi, and i have no problems with uneven wear or anything.

I second that. 32psi is what i run at Cold temp.

Take it to a gas station on a cool night and fill it up with air. Make sure you dont have too much Moisture/Fog outside when you do that either.

Add to that invest in a tire pressure gauge. I try to check my pressure every weekend to make sure it's correct.

i got stock size tires and rims so i run 26 psi.

I think that is to low. I have stock rims and and i think the stock tire size and i run 32psi.

Just look at the sticker on the driver's side door jamb. Mine says 26 front and rear and that's what I use. I have used higher pressures in the past and all I got for my trouble was a harsher ride and tires that never lasted any longer. For stock LXi the pressure is 26. I think it is different for DX and LX, but I just don't know for sure.

Since I have had the car since new I have been through quite a few sets of tires!

harsher ride? tires wear out faster? what kind cheap tires do you have?
you don't have lowering springs or coil-overs do you? i am running 32 psi and my car still feels like Lincoln car.

That was a set of Kelly Charger HR's that I bought back in 1991. I put 40psi in them as the guy at the store recommended. You WILL notice a difference between 26 and 40, believe me. Between 26 and 32, not so much. I have original springs and Monroe "Sens-a-crap" struts. Nothing fancy.

well kelly tires are junk to start with. i bought a brand new set long time ago, and they only lasted less than 12k.

My wife's civic has goodyear tires (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Assurance+TripleTred), and my accord has Yokohama tires (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVID+Touring). i run 32psi in both cars and the ride is comfy, gas mileage is great and best of all they can handle snow and rain very easy.

So far the best tires I have had were the Michelin MXV's that came on the car. They lasted 45,000 miles. My Yokohoma FK06U's lasted only 30,000. right now I have some Kuhmo Solus (don't recall the exact model) H rated. I have a little over 7,000 miles on them and have rotated once. Since most of my driving is stop-and-go these days I will probably never see 45,000 miles out of an H-rated tire again!

well remember, lower tire pressure can speed up tire wear too. it creates more friction. you can always bump up the pressure to 28-29 psi.
