Anyone used a shop press to press out old bearings or ball joints or lower arm bushings? Harbor Freight has a 12 ton floor press for $80.

I've never used one, but when I replaced my lower ball joints and one bearing it cost $60 just get them pressed in and out, so I was thinking of saving some $ in the long run, but wanted to know if this is the right tool for the job.
thanks

that will do the job. but shipping is going to be another story. before you order anything from harbor freight google "harbor freight cupon" there is usually a 20% off cupon floating around the internet. ill prob end up buying that same one. if you get the poly bushings that are 2 piece, you can install them with a bench vice

I bought a metal brake, bead roller, and something else that was pretty heavy
from them a while back. Total weight was around 260 or 270. They shipped it for 8 dollars.

Later that month I bought an air riviter from them. It weighed about 5 pounds. It was 8 bucks shipping on it to.

Why not use an arbor press? That's what we use for bearings up to 2 inch bore at the machine shop.

I've heard that it's well worth the extra money to get the 20 ton press over the 12 ton. I've heard a lot of not-so-good about the 12, but only praise about the 20. it's also great to have the extra capacity if you ever do need it. with cars nearing 20 years old, you're bound to find something you'll need it for.

a big 3 pound hammer took out my front lower ball joints and i replaced them with moog and they fit like a glove...no pressing or anything.

It is a bench mounted press that comprises a rack and pinion, a lever, an overarm and a table.

I was curious about how much force it takes to press in/out a bearing or balljoint.... I can just imagine that the 12ton - 10 years ago woulda rated out as a 4ton....
Of course you get into higher $$ with a 20ton, and tougher to justify since I don't have a high demand for the press.....
I looked into the 20 ton - about $200 (proly get it on sale) and if there's a 20% coupon floating around....might be reasonable!
thanks

That will work, just need some inserts to fit the bushings your pressing out.

Sweet, I'll check out our store tomorrow. Beats having 'em pressed out/in for like $20 each. The shop charged me like $120 for each knuckle.

Okay, so I went to harbor freight today and looked at the presses. First I looked at the 12 ton, it was on sale for $108. The construction looks very weak and probably wouldn't last. Next I looked at the 20 ton, it was $250, what a difference! Thick steel with welded joints. I would've got it but it was just too big and heavy for me. I got this instead for $170:

It made quick work of the rusted-in shock bushings on my rear SEi spindles:

Of course I had to get this while I was there:

looks nice.....too bad you have to take out the whole rear hub to take off the lower bushing.

Thanks! The problem isn't with the hub getting in the way, it is with the splash guard. But of course the hub needs to be removed to get it out. I'm thinking of getting various sizes of pipe and welding a base on each. This would give me a small raised area to support around the bushing as I press it. With a setup like that you wouldn't need to remove anything to get to the bushings. The hubs are getting replaced anyway, so no big.

Usually you canj ust swap in a 20 ton bottle jack in place of the 10 or 12 ton in there. Thats the jist of it anyway.

If your real tricky you could make one with some I or H beams and a good welder. its a fun shop project and then you dont have to send the Chinese your money and the quality will prolly be better.

EDIT:

heres a good design

I'm sure nearly every 20-ton bottle jack is also made in China these days. They WILL get your money one way or another.

good luck on getting the front wheel bearings out, they aren't bad to get in,but hell to get out. we used a 40 ton and they didn't want to come out, pressing them back in was easy with a giant arbor press. i'll see if i can find the threads I started on it

I think these are the two main ones.
