View Full Version : Grinding from Park to Reverse

I have a 93 Accord that will not go into reverse without making a loud grinding sound.

There is no problem with the forward gears (by the way it is an automatic).

When I try to put it in reverse it grinds and I can still hear a very low level of grinding sound with it in neutral (only after trying to put it in reverse). The sound it not there if I go from D4 to neutral.

Thanks.

i don't think you have clutch cable. i think it is hydraulic. you may have a bad tranny.

Is'nt there linkage adjustments that can be done on auto trannies?

i would check the oil....on my manual car it does it so i shift it to 4th gear b4 i put in reverse so it wont grind.

i am not sure how 4 gen accords have their auto trannies setup, but check the oil.

Most of the older Honda auto trannies will to the ratceht sound when going from reverse to any other gear (especially when cold)

It's not supposed to affect anything other than being annoying. I'll do more research on this one but my 87 does it when cold.

The problem now is I cannot get it to go into reverse. Before this point it would make a loud "clunk" sound and go into reverse. It has gotten so bad that now it will not switch into reverse.

(by the way thanks for your responces!)

i think you fried your tranny. you should check the oil level more often.

The transmission fluid was only about 3oz low.

what color is the tranny fluid and does it have burn smell to it.
the tranny may have been dying for some time now.

You should check your shifter linkage, and electronics associated with selector.
Also you can swap your shift releys (solenoids) up by the radiator support on passenger side of the transmission,to see if that makes any difference. These transmissions has considerable electronic controls so void out all those problems before replacing tranny.
What does your shift indicator do, the light that is?

I replaced the transmission and it works alot better now though, there is now an occational jump when it is changing from D3 to D4.
Thanks for the help.

I guess don't park so you have to go backwards. That's what I had to do when my tranny was ready to die. My reverse went first, so I never parked so I had to reverse out. That's my tip of the day!
