View Full Version : Steve_Si's foglight update thread

Well I've started shifting the fog light parts from the donor car to my good 3G. The most important part is missing (no lights!) but it kinda makes sense to use all the donor's stuff anyway to make it easy when I find the fogs later on.
Here is the wiring I pulled out of the donor car. The one on the left is just a light bulb for the switch. On the left of the main one you can see the small fuse box and two plugs that go in to the loom near the in-cabin fuse box. The two top most plugs, which include piggy-back sockets plug in to the fuse box itself, although I piggy-backed one of them from something that was already plugged in. The right one is the plug for the switch.

Here you can see where most of them plug in, thanks Honda for making this easy :D

Wiring and fuses in place.

The switch (sorry for the poor quality, it focuses on the stupid floor mat)
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4829/p1010077tu3.jpg
The result so far, I have 12 volts at a plug near the battery when the switch is turned on. It also turns on the park lights

Tune in soon for the wiring to the lights and the brackets :) It was raining today so I couldn't be bothered pulling them out of the donor car.

Look good. It seems that it uses connectors not present on USDM cars.
Those motorized fogs seem to be hard to come by :naughty:

Yeah, all you really need is the switch and the bit of wiring that the switch plugs in too. Then I guess you'd have to run your own relay and wiring to the fogs. That would probably be better though, this factory system will keep the fogs on even if the main headlight switch is fully off. I prefer to be able to turn all my lights off with the headlight switch.

Well today I pulled the bumper off the white 3G (thanks OD for telling me how, this is the first time I've ever removed a panel from a car) and removed the wiring and brackets for the fog lights, here you can see them and the bumper removed from the silver 3G, ready to fit.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/9459/p1010079ii7.jpg

The brackets bolt on using two of the three bolts that hold the bumper supports on. I had to use new cable ties for the wiring cause i have a big metal plate blocking some of the holes that the OEM cable ties clip in too.

The fog lights actually have three wires running to them; 12 volts, a very low voltage signal cable (i think) and the ground wire.

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/7885/p1010082je7.jpg

So it's all ready to roll, just gotta find me some fogs!

Steve_Si

Found some fogs today :D They are from a Prelude but they still hook up the same.

First problem was I had hooked up the wiring wrong. These fogs have 2 12 volt lines going to them. One main one for the bulbs, and another one to activate the motors. I had hooked up the motors to the middle of the three plugs in the in-cabin fuse box, which happens to the aux power. The third one is power when lights are on, so once I hooked it up to this it was all good.

They still act a bit strange, they will open without the main lights being on. But they will not close unless at least the park lights are on. So if you turn the main lights off before turning off the fogs, the covers stay open.

I'll still keep an eye out for some accord fogs, hopefully I can just change the covers over.

03-21-2007, 11:55 AM
Cheers guys :)

mkymonkey I'm not sure what I want to put on them yet. I've removed the Prelude stickers and given the covers a fresh coat of black paint. I'll either leave them like they are, put badges on them or get you to make some stickers for them.

MessyHonda I can probably find more sets, these were at the first junk yard I visited and they said they probably had more. You guys should wait for Carotman to figure out how to wire his up then I can send some over.

thegreatdane yeah it was easy to do thanks to the wiring. Looks like JDM models already have 1/2 the wiring in them, the other 1/2 came from a car that actually had fogs. Without that I would have needed help.

I'll take another pic or two of the cleaned up lights, and another movie but I think I'll wait until the F1 Interior has been swapped and start a general update thread for it. Should be this weekend.

I'm trying to wire my fogs with the JDM wiring.

One of the plugs went directly in the fuse box, providing power when the switch is turned on. I seem to be missing a part of the wiring tough.

Is it supposed to come with a relay or something?

2ndGenGuy
05-20-2008, 02:17 PM
Woah those are wicked. I'd put a set of those on the 2g for sure.

Steve_Si
05-20-2008, 02:44 PM
I got it working with only the parts you can see in the pics, a loom with 3 fuses and the switch, and the bumper wiring. The rest was pre-installed from factory I guess. If there was a relay, it would have already been in the car.

carotman
05-20-2008, 03:05 PM
I identified some of the components in your picture to the best of my knowledge

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/1860/fogwiringqw0.th.jpg (http://img291.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fogwiringqw0.jpg)

I got the wiring from the later (88-89) cars so I'm missing the yellow/green wire for the retractor.

Here's a diagram I made of the currect wiring I have:

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/4945/fogdiagramqx3.th.jpg (http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fogdiagramqx3.jpg)

In the Enginebay wiring, all I have is the blue/red wire that goes to both foglights. I'm wondering what the other circuit the switch controls. (the Red/Yellow and Red/Green)

Could it be for the rear fogs?

Also, the white wire comming from the fusebox has a constant 12V comming from it.

carotman
05-20-2008, 04:51 PM
I think the other circuit (red/yellow and red/green) controls the relay through the low beam circuit. The switch turns both circuits on or off so if the relay fails, the regular lights will still work.

Any thoughts?

A18A
05-20-2008, 07:39 PM
the other circuit probably turns the park lights on&off

Steve_Si
05-21-2008, 12:16 AM
Lucky I still have the fogs! No 3g though lol

I think the white wire is supposed to have permenant 12v. It's power to the fogs and they work when the car is off.

The other circuit certainly has something to do with turning on the park lights.

The connectiors with the ? beside them are just the 12v input for the retractor. Another one can piggy back off it, that's why there are 2 connectors. It can plug in to 3 different places in the fuse box, the difference being perm. power, acc power, power when lights are on etc. If you look at my second picture, that connector you can see right in the middle is actually the same, and at first I piggy-backed off that. That turned out to be accessory power, and I couldn't close the fogs after stopping the car :P So I moved it to another spot

carotman
05-21-2008, 03:15 AM
I'll try to make sure there's a relay (or not) before wiring them. I don't want to fry anything in the car! The wire colors do match the lighting system on the car tough.

Anyone with a JDM Accord can check this for me? The car is pre-wired so it doesn't even need to have the fogs installed.

AccordB20A

i installed a relay coming straight from the battery for my fogs. matt i dunno if your car has a relay it runs from the fusebox to a couple of fuses the switch and then the lights. i cant remember if there is a fuse for each light

i never found a relay when my OEM facelift fogs were removed from my car when i did the "strip down and rebuild" But then again when i got the car they didnt go. but i think the bulbs were both fucked, i didnt take any notice on the wiring either. but it does have that little plug with two wires like steve showed us ages ago, when i installed mine, i got the under-dash harness plugged it into that single spade connector on the fuse box that gave it a constant 12v it went to a switch and a plug thats on the cars wiring loom with three wires, one going to the parklights and the other two going to the engine bay plug. I think i have a OEM dash foglight loom spare that has fuses on it i should go check it out

the 3 pin connector for the fog lights is under the dash by the fuse box on my car and comes out at the front of the car down between the battery and headlight. by its a two wire plug when it comes out, the 3rd wire uner the dash is for the park lights i believe.
that the 3 wires you mean?

carotman
06-27-2008, 09:33 AM

directly to the engine bay. as they have no need to go anywhere else:) and its the same on a prelude and i just completed a stripdown of all unneccessary wires on a preldue and thats where they went, no joints or anything

carotman
06-30-2008, 07:18 PM
Ok, so there's no relay or anything I guess

I just need to bring the blue/red wire up front and that's it. I'll wire the other 2 to the parking light switch in case I forget the fog switch in the ON position. This way the light reminder will chime

Thanks a thousand

did you ever get this figured out carotman? I got steves set in the mail yesterday and am eager to figure it out. Im not so concerned with jdm factory as you are. Id be more inclined to piggyback the headlight switch so the fogs act like the headlights with the foglight switch acting as a main power on/off switch but controlled by the headlights

mykwikcoupe
09-07-2008, 06:17 PM
well I havent tried to fit anything yet but it appears the barckets use existing mounts that the bumper uses also. If this is the case, I should be able to fab something up bringing the brackets further into the bumper cavity. Ill use the stock bracket as a template only so they are still stock if it doesnt work or I decide to change it later. I just like the look of the power cover on the foglights. I wish I could find a clear lense for them though.
