Ole Busted Blue is back again! Looks good cheese. Feel any difference with the weight reduction?? I wonder how it will look with black rims to go with the hood. And I agree that the tint or smoked look will go good with the carbonfiber.

looks good cheese meister, old post whore old pal. you ought to post a pic of when your old hood flew up on the freeway,on the way to the meet, you've come a long way. I might work on something for the grill let me think for a couple of days. there used to be somebody on here who could wrap items in carbon fiber, whatever happened to that? what you need on the corner markers is something really different, what about corner markers you can see through with carbon fiber on the inside and the proper colored bulbs? a convex lens with leds behind it under the clear outer part of the light would look good. actually the 86 87 eyebrows and corners would look better with the hood then the later ones, they look almost like carbon fiber, instead of the straight lines.

I just recently aquired a carbon fiber hood but it doesn't seem to have the holes for the grill to be mounted. I tried to look for a how-to on mounting the grill but had no luck.

I want to set it up like the stock hood with the windshield washer nozzles in place, the washer tubing mounted like stock, the grill mounted like stock as well, and NO hood pins if I can avoid it.

lostforawhile
06-26-2008, 05:07 AM
i wouldn't mind having a carbon fiber hood if the top was painted to look like the steel hood,so it would be a neat trick to open the hood at shows to see the bottom is carbon fiber. likea stealth hood. hey on the one without the holes for the grill mounting take a picture of the bottom side i might have the solution for you on fixing that. picture of the area where the grill is supposed to mount.

MessyHonda
06-26-2008, 07:02 AM
i remember at the meet he had cut the back support of the hood and just added a washer and a luck nut to keep the grill in place...every smart idea

lostforawhile
06-26-2008, 07:46 AM
i was going to suggest riv nuts, they are a plate with a welded on nut,you install each one of them with two rivets each . these allow you to add a threaded nut to a thin section of material that can't be threaded. these are used a lot in aircraft skins, and a lot of race teams that use real carbon fiber, use them to hold those panels in place on the car body. i will try to find a picture.

lostforawhile
06-26-2008, 07:52 AM
correction i meant to say nut plate, these are available from pegasus racing for around 46 cents or so apiece. you have someone hold the grill in position on the hood, you carefully mark each location where the bolt centers will go,now carefully centerdrill each marking so you have a starting point for the drill, now drill each hole so the round part of the nut plate slides into it, now drill and rivet each nut plate into place. now you have a solid mounting point for your grill. i have these all over my car for replacing those dam square plastic things the screws go into. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/Images/L/MS21047.JPG picture isn't working,so heres the link. http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productselection.asp?Product=MS21047

so do the carbon fiber hoods have cutouts for washers or not?with these nut plates they are a blind installation, you drill the hole, install one of these and rivet it in place

Bones
06-26-2008, 09:50 AM
The bottom of the hood looks like they made a mold of the stock hood skeleton with tape in any open holes ... so I can see where the bolt holes are supposed to be.

Those rivet on blind nuts look like the perfect solution.

Now to see if there's someplace in town to get some of those. I'll probably go down to Jegs later tonight to see if they have some in stock.

there had been a group buy back in '01 (if I remember right) to get the production of these hoods started, and plenty have been made since. i don't remember exactly what company made (is making) them, but they're around.

They did just take a mold of the stock skeleton, and it's made of fiberglass, not c/f (just the skeleton is fiber that is, not the main skin).

Anyone ever consider using stainless steel T-nuts (used extensively in marine applications)?

The guy I got my new hood from told me it's from that original group buy. He had the padded wooden blocks used for shipping still attached to it. After 7 years it's about time it actually ended up on a car. I'll post updated photos in the "Fresh pics of "Rough Life" thread when I get everything mounted up.

I do believe there are 2 types being made. Most have cut edges around the corners and the original group buy was for rolled edges. Ive been looking and asking all the ebay companies if theres are rolled or cut. Id pay major bucks for a CF hood without washer nozzles. I cant find anyone willing to modifiy them though. I wish i could find the contact for the company that makes them and see if they will make me one.

Bones
07-01-2008, 11:17 AM
mine seems to have cut edges but didn't have cut-outs for washer nozzles or any way to mount up a grill.

I had to get hood locks to hold down the drivers side since the whole thing seems to be twisted ... possibly long term storage issues if it wasn't stored perfectly flat. I guess now that I've HAD to drill it for a couple different things, I might as well mount the washers in the stock position as well.
