Well, I finally got it passed. On Friday morning (April 6,2007), I brought my 1986 Accord LX-i to the referee station to get my B16a3 swap BAR approved. This was my third try at getting it passed, and I guess as they say, third times the charm. I'm not sure if any of the other swapped 3geez have attempted this, but if not, I'm happy to be the first.

Lolz, I wish that was the truth! What it means is that my swap is legit, and I can smog it like a normal Accord. If I get pulled over by a cop, all is well, he can cry over my BAR sticker while he cleans the donut jelly off his badge...lolz!

The price of the actual testing is cheap, $35 including the certificate. Cheaper than a regular smog check! The cost, as you will learn, comes from purchasing all the correct smog equipment, and the numerous times you will have to run the tests if you don't get it all right the first time. The cost is the same to test all cars, but the cost to make it compliant will vary greatly with each swap combination. I would suggest calling your closest referee station and asking if you can get the free pamphlets regarding legal swaps and mods.

A few things to keep in mind:
- The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle chassis
- All emissions equipment must match the engine (year and model specific)
- You cannot use engines from different vehicle classifications. For example, this means no B20B/Z from the CRV because it is classed as a light truck.
- Make sure you have CARB numbers for ALL of your mods.
- Use only black OEM style rubber hoses, try to avoid aftermarket silicone. These are not recognized as approved unless they are part of a CARB legal kit.
- Don't mix and match engine parts unless you are sure it is undetectable. The more stock you are, the easier it is to pass. Do your mods after your certified!

I hope this helps you and everyone else. Oh, and those who are asking about the B20A, it might not be as easy as you think, they are known to check engine codes and serial numbers from time to time. So trying to pass it as a USDM Prelude engine may not work, especially if the hose routings are different and the emissions equipment is missing or different. Good Luck!
