View Full Version : Weird Squeek... Only When It's Running

Here's the deal. I have an 89 Accord Lxi Lude 5sp. When running sometimes it squeeks when you push the clutch and sometimes when you hit bumps. While it is running you can pop the hood and push down on the engine enough to make it more then back off it will squeek. If I kill the engine I can't get it to squeek at all. It only does it sometimes so it is hard as hell to track down. Anybody have any ideas?

Something to do with the clutch is my guess.

It can't have anything to do with the clutch. sometimes when I hit bumps I hear the squeek. My clutch has about... 29k on it and grabs great. I am going to start checking for broken motor mounts.

maybe a little soft drivetrain mount that could have the exhaust shields or something touching body.
Unless its a motor mount bushing so bad its metal on metal
check dust shiieds/brackets if any, around bell housing area

Might you have a couple of different squeeks? The usual squeek candidate up front is the mounting bushing in the upper control arm. You can fix it temporarily by taking off a wheel and really blasting the mount with silicone spray, but the only way to do a permanent fix is remove the bushing and reinstall after greasing with silicone grease.

From the OP I gather that the engine generates a squeak when moving vertically. This is probably either the front mount or the bottom transmission mount. The front mount is hydraulic so its pretty easy to see if its broken by looking for fluid around the mount. Bottom tranny mount is just a piece of rubber.

I have had both upper control arms replaced. I went ahead and pulled them off anyways and they had a fair amount of grease on them but U went ahead and really greased the bushings up and put them back together and it still squeeks. I may just go ahead and replace the lower front and lower rear motor mounts and see where that gets me. They are pretty old and prob need replacing anyways. It didn't squeek until I replaced the dog bone mount. Looking at the engine and the placement of the motor mounts it looks as though the engine is leaning back to far. I say that because the driver's side motor mount is torqued at a funny angle. I looked at the rear motor mount but I don't know if it is good or not. It looks like a piece of rubber an dit doesn't look smashed or anything. I have ruled out the struts being it. I don't know. I may just have to turn up my stereo until I figure out what is wrong!

Maybe it's just me, but that driver side motor mount don't look right. Looks like metal to metal contact.

Its the wire wheel that the mouse is running on squeking. Needs a little oil, then it will be OK

The driver-side mount is probably twisted like that because the engine doesn't sit straight in the engine bay. I'd venture to guess that the car had a loose dog-bone mount for a while and that probably allowed the engine to rotate like that. At this point, the rear bottom mount is probably in poor condition as well. The rear bottom mount isn't designed to accommodate the engine moving toward the firewall and its probably cracked by now. Its only purpose is vertical dampening. The dog bone is what maintains engine position in the back. So in summary: Driver-side mount is a goner, rear bottom mount is likely in need of replacement. yes you may be right.
have a look at the factory manual regarding motor mounts. There is a specific procedure to get those things in just right //// for zero noise zero vibrations and zero torque lost because of flex. Interesting stuff
