Yeah, so I (with guy's help) got the hatch glass outta the hatch. It was suggested that I weld up and shave the wiper and washer holes, and ditch the motor, which weighs like 8 pounds. In addition to dropping weight, I figure it'll lend a cleaner look, I never use the wiper/washer, I still have the heater grid in the back window, and I can use the simpler sedan combination switch (which plugs right in). I can also ditch a bunch of wiring and it'll make the hatch lighter.
What do you figure, custom shaved decklid, or keep it original and functional? The car will never be winter driven, so consider that as well...

Dump that shit! Last hatch I drove, the rear wiper didn't do a whole lot of good. And that glass isn't slanted THAT much more than the sedans. I think keep the ass end clean, it will really stand out. Especially that 82 hatch. WAY fewer of those than anything. It will be a stand out car. Make it clean and shine. Since you're shaving the moldings, and probably the emblems, you should shave that off too. Most people won't notice, but those who do will really know whats up.

Just imagine the hatch without a wiper or sprayer nozzle.

Yes, I'm a big fan of the clean, shaven hatch. What guy isn't?

I am doing the same thing on my 3g. :) ditching the wiper, motor, wiring etc. I will probably keep the rear defrost just for good measure, but I am pulling the rest. :D :D

You should post a picture when you do, I'm curious what it looks like.

I'm starting to lean towards loosing it and the badging. Of course all holes will be welded shut in fine style.

Weld up them holes. If you decide you miss the badges, you can always stick the emblems on the paint with the 2-sided tape. Just snap off those little posts and sand them clean.
Yeah def dump it. Nice way to save a lil weight which when combined with a lot of other lil ways to save weight adds up to a lot of weight.

I only went half way on mine, removed the wiper & motor & made up a filler plug to glue in from behind so I could always refit the wiper later & painted over the lot, -though the joint/paint did crack so I probably should have left a small gap between the two.
Washer nozzle so small I left it in place (& since I didn't think i could remove it without breaking it).
& definately remove badge holes -but the s/metals so thin mine needed carefull filler-resurfacing to conceal heat distortion from MIG. -but then my car had 6 badges across the rear hatch & another below the tail-light !

had to add something, i haven't had my wiper arm on for a while and it drives me nuts, i can't clear the back window, in the rain. it's only off because i have the spoiler off for the moment working on it,and it was in the way for that. as far as weight i will have to weigh the motor and see what it actually weighs, i did fill the hole for the rear washer though,i would like to find a washer arm with the built in squirter, and go from there. does anybody have a rear washer that actually still works? lol. we do need a thread on getting that glass out of the hatch frame though, i would like to see how it looks without the moldings. we tried to get the glass out of my old frame at school, and concluded it won't come out. thats with equipment designed to remove glass.

lost i have a hatch with good wiper motor... i would sell it, but shipping alone is probably more than it would cost you to snag one from a junkyard. :( those fuckers are kind of heavy if i recall... Also not sure how difficult it is to remove, I haven't looked into that yet. :)

i have the hatch that is on my car, which has a rusted corner, and is complete and functional other than the rust, and i have another hatch that i pulled form a junkyard that i pulled everything off of, and snipped the wires off of. I was planning on swapping hatches for if/when I paint my car. But I probably won't want the hatch wiper motor either way.
