There is an intermittent popping sound at the exhaust outlet during idle. Every two or three seconds, you could hear a pop if you stand right next to the muffler. Does this mean the car is idling too rich?

it might mean your timing is off.

Backfires
Noise
Engine Backfire / Exhaust Pop

Causes / Conditions
1) Fuel mixture : too rich / too lean ?
2) Ignition timing : too advanced / too retarded
3) Holes in exhaust

There are instances where you might momentarily cause the conditions above though rough or even mild driving.
If the exhaust noises occur constanly then numbers 1-3 should be looked at and corrected.

Other things include distributor cap and roto, sparkplugs and wires... even battery terminal connections and engine grounds

Exhaust is in excellent condition. Everything behind the cat was replaced with genuine Honda parts three years ago. Therefore, the exhaust should be trouble free for another ten years.

The timing at idle is a perfect 26-degrees TDC. I just checked it the other day.

Carburetor...might be time for Weber!

mine has done that with vacuum leaks on the carb and manifold. as soon as i fix them, the popping stops and idle is much smoother. might take a look at the vacuum lines if the car runs pretty well otherwise.

The hood on my car says 26 degrees. The mark on the flywheel also says 26 degrees.

carbed engine should be set at 24-26 deg. EFI 15deg.
make sure you set the timing to TDC and recheck after that. that way you will know if your vacuum advance is working.
