I have no idea what im looking at.. Does that black thing with the spiral tube or whatever compress the springs?

if u look in the middle of the spring the top of the strut is viable and that not supposed to happen

apparently nut was loose, so yeah, it fell off. and spring compressor is because w/o the shock, the spring decompresses (remember, you have to compress it to put it on the shock...) and it becomes damn near impossible to get the screw at the bottom out that connects the shock assembly to the hub. as it was, it took a good fifteen minutes of grunting + lots of grease, drywall screw, and impact wrench to get it out.

correct. and you're also looking at the top of the shock in the middle of the spring, while it's on the car. that isn't normal.

i guess i never thought it would be hard to take it off with out the strut

Even if the nut did fall off I don't think that would be the cause of the shock being completely compressed like that. I think that the shock could have possibly failed. After the gas was forced out of the shock, the spring decompressed and snapped off the nut on the end of the shock. This is because the shock couldn't decompress because it couldn't fill itself with air. I could be completely wrong though. I'd have to see it in person.
