View Full Version : How do I pull of the carb?

I'm baffled... I'm trying to pull the carb off of my 1985 5sp, and can't seem to figure out how to get at the mounting bolts, as they are thoroughly blocked by vaccum lines (which I have removed from the carb itself), and by the carburettor body as well. I can't get a wrench (that I own) in there.

Any ideas?

Just 4 12mm bolts at the base. Might have to use a swivel or wobble extension to get on them. Might also have to remove the choke module to reach that one.

Yeah have fun with that. You've got to just start pulling stuff off bit by bit until you can access those 4 bolts at the base. TONS of vacuum stuff has to come off. If you're planning on putting all the vacuum stuff back on, take your time and mark everything. Take pictures to help too. Just be thorough, methodical and take the time to do it right. One hose missing or disconnected and the car will not run right.

You're diving into one of the most complicated carbs of all time. Even the A20 guys have got nothing on the 2g carbs. ;)

I obliterated most of those vacuum lines before trying to swap carbs. I run lines to the distributer, the signal line on the charcoal canister and a source line to the HVAC controls. This is all the car really needs, and you can do a carb swap with one wrench on the side of the road in 10 minutes. I thought the mounting nuts used a 10mm wrench?

Yeah the 2gs are a 10mm wrench.

If you can do a carb swap on a US model 2g in 10 minutes, you are god. We weren't so lucky with the simplicity of our carbs.

I've developed a method: When I acquire the replacement carb, I remove it complete with the hellbox attached. Then it's simply a matter of 4 nuts, fuel and vent lines and one butt connector for the idle mixture solenoid. Some models have a coolant activated choke, which can cause additional PITA issues.
