Finally starts working on my car. There are couple of small rust spots that I need to take care of first. The car has been repainted 2 times before and theres body filler everywhere  Some of them are as thick as 5mm! I'm stripping to bare metal and use the filler only when its needed.
I'm working together with my father. He used to work at body shop back in the 60's, and pretty good with it.
Heres couple of pics:
Rusts at the quarter panel near the rear window. Look at the filler!!!!

bondo/filler is the cheapest way out from fixing a dent or ding....the point of it is...pull out the metal as far as possible to original place then use bondo to smooth it out.....and yeah 5mm is alot.
Owtch but hey its guna get another nice dose of TLC good luck

The rust is not that bad actually. The paint itself is still in good condition. The filler is ugh.. its so thick that the original lines and curve is almost non existant. I am stripping it as much as I can.
Remember that the car has frame damage and not what I can call straight car anymore. Me and my dad are doing this just for 'fun' and to learn. We are planning to spend less than $200 in paint and materials. Hope everything goes well!

I know trying to get the bonnet perfect is a real pain with large flat areas & thin sheet metal, mines still got a few dents down the spine & odd subtle depressions -I'm just glad it's a light colour to hide it. & the panel flexs so much, filler is all too likely to crack & fallout or let moisture behind & rust & removing its paint I gave up trying to sand it & went for the paint stripper -too easy to over-heat & warp with electric sander. (My Accords bonnet weighs about half what my Lancia one does!)
I'm now repairing rust holes in my Preludes where filler was used around w/screen pillars & rear panel joints instead of seam-seal like factory. You're unlikely to get a perfect surface with it, but if there's movement involved it will flex more rather than crack & won't let the moisture in.

Yeah man your car has less rust on it than my 2gee does! Though I think my 81 has got yours beat in that department. Your car was beating me in the paint department, since mine is a nice shade of pink. I'm sure your car will look fantastic when you're done though. Getting rid of that bondo should be some nice preventative maintenence. :)

The car has minimal rust as its already been fixed sometimes ago. The original color is beige and repainted silver. Thats what it is when my dad bought it somewhere in 90's from his friend. My dad then repainted the car metallic blue (current color). Imagine at least 6 layers of paint on the body excluding the filler.... In some area theres even 3 layers of fillers in different color!!!
Todays update..

There were at least 3 Honda metallic gold's '76-82 weren't there if you liked any of them, brassy/bronze though to a soft gold... & some blue's similar to yours (maybe a little less grey?)
But so often people do bad colour matches when retouching metallics....
Nice to see your car's colour change was so thorough, under the interior door trims & all.
It's amazing how much difference all the detailing like inside the light lenses will make to the end result. That looks great.

I bought few rolls of these:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v197/ullyeus/forum/3geez/DSC01287.jpg
It is used to fix roof leaks and stuffs like that. It is the exact same material (tar) as the sound deadening stuffs. The price? RM16/roll which equals to US$4.44!! The only downside is its small (50mmx10m). But damn, its CHEAP even if you bought 20 rolls - which is probably what I'm going to buy later to cover the entire interior!

Yikes! That could get pretty tricky. I know that coolant lines are sensitive and leak easy due to the high pressure. You might wanna get that looked at by someone who really knows A/C. I would be pretty pissed too, but I would put it off until after the paintwork is done!

No way I'm going to live without AC lol. Its really hot here.
Now ugh, the whole left side of the body is oily as fuck and I don't even know when I'm going to clean it off. I took early leave from work yesterday just to work on my car. I thought that we could at least paint the engine bay his weekend.. Now I am going to waste my weekend to clean the mess off. And that same pipe is recently replaced due to leak less than a year ago :(
Looking on the bright side, I might remove the compressor to gain ccess on the right hand side to paint the engine bay :)
Edit: is it okay to leave the AC system empty for few weeks? I plugged the hole already. I'm going to reseal it again so moisture or some shits wont get into it.

Very annoying.
I'm still surprised your AC compressor is mounted up there. All my Accords & Preludes with AC have their alternator mounted there when fitted with AC, with the heavier compressor mounted down low. Either way I'm glad the Accord has good ventilation so I can do without (my CRX has crap ventilation, more glass & NEEDS its Automatic AC & fan running or window open).

Hey how did you tuck your engine bay wiring? Its clean! Any tips/tricks?
I wish it was actually clean, I never got around to all the detail painting it needs!
I did go a little silly there & partially unwrap the left hand side wiring harness, running some inside the plenum & pulling the rest back through its hole in the firewall into the interior of the car & drilling a small hole in the firewall through to the inside of the left side frame rail & routed the harness through that with another small hole for the alternator & engine wiring & the rest continuing to the end for the lights, light wiring & connectors outside body behind grille.
I had to remove some connectors while pulling through & refit them afterwards, & bend a small reinforcement inside the rail around the bumper mountings.
Of course the fact this car has no power steering Air-con options helped.
Emissions charcoal canister moved from in front of left wheel-arch to the little crevice behind & its bracket removed.
Battery & washer bottle relocated from the big bracket above the right frame rail (with all its hard to clean & rusty crevices) to sit on simple new bracket on / in front of crossmember and the old bracket removed.
Right side harness just wrapped in the convoluted tube wrapping available & run along top of right frame rail (always meant to make of an alloy cover for this & never did)
Also made up a sheet aluminium panel to smooth & clean up the firewall & hide what wiring remained there.

Hi Hazwan
Great job, so far!
The car is nearly totally stripped, why didn't you checked the bended suspension first? Is there no body shop near you, it can not be so expensive, I would do this before painting. I can send scans of the body repair manual, if you like.
The gold paint looks great, but light metalic paints and especially gold are very hard to repair later. I think, I had choosed an original Honda color...
Do you paint the engine bay too?
Good luck, Detlef
Hazwan
06-30-2007, 09:46 PM
The suspension component is fine, its the crossmember mounting point meved couple cms back. So far the car still drives fine, we don't feel like sending the car to fix the suspension. Who knows what else could go wrong when they pull back the chassis..

Hi Hazwan
Removing the engine is not so much work. Theres no need for special tools, except a lift, of course, but sanding and painting is MUCH easyer then. I'm not sure, if covering each single part is less work. (?) It remembers a little bit at Mr. Bean, anybody knows the episode 'Do it yourself'? He covered every single part in his room before painting with a 'big bang' :D
Never the less, your engine bay looks fine now!

That's why I've usually done it the other way -out the bottom, then you only need a trolley (or roller skates) & a jack (or two), undo steering, brakes, shift linkage, drop frt of car in trolley, undo subframe bolts & lift body away.

im excited, that engine bay looks awesome and rust-free. gold to go with the brake calipers right?
you even inspired me to take my rear bumper off and attack the rust holes in the rear sill and wheelarch corners. my car also has a slightly [ok very] wonky front-most crossmember. i swapped it for an unmashed one and sort of shimmed it a bit with some metal plate to make it sit flat. i had to modify the hemispherical bushings for those long rods that bolt to the swingarms to bring the whole front wheel forward about 1 cm too, but it runs pretty much straight now, aside from a tiny bit of steering rack play.
its a pain having even slightly damaged components [nothing fits right arrrgh], but like you said the alternatives arent very attractive.
You're doing some excellent work.

Thanks. His car is one of my inspiration to work on my car :)
As for the parts, windscreen and the seal are available, as I broke my windshield 2 years ago. Non original though. I have no idea about others (weather strips etc.)
Junkyard cars are plenty, at least here in my area. Last time I went theres at least 4 1geez. Parts are getting harder to find and getting more expensive every year..

I'm unhappy with the middle lines on left quarter panel and front right door. Needs some filling/sanding. And ugh, I'm running out of primer, so that explains the lower right door..
So far the 'fixed' part (bonnet, left fender and roof) turns out nice, smooth and sharp lines.

So ugh, its still early in the morning, waiting for the weather to warm up a little before I can proceed with final clear layers... Updates in another 6 hours or so :)
Anyway, I did this last night, what do you think? I don't know if I like the lightings.. I'll try with UV LEDs later on to see if its good. I'll repaint the bezel to black or something. Dark silver + white doesn't go well together IMO. What color should I paint the needles? Blue, red or black?
Sorry for crappy pics.

It wouldn't be a Honda without a little rice. :)
I think it looks good, but you won't be able to see those needles at night unless you paint them a different color. Red and orange are practically opposite colors of blue, and they'll disappear. Black might work, but for ultimate bling, paint them UV reactive and use the UV LEDs. Then they'll glow at night! :D

Thanks. I think I'll go with gunmetal, gold and maybe bronze looks.. meh
The car is painted outdoors, I have no garage. There are some dusts on the paint, but I hope sanding will fix that. I'm not looking for 100% flawless paintjob. I am really happy on how the paint turns out. It's a lot better than expected! I must say the paint looks a lot better than what an average body shop work. So far the the costs for the materials+paint is hair over $200, which is still within my budget :)

Give me another week or so to finish up the car!
As for the spring, actually I am not sure. I got them off the junkyard few years back for free and it seems lower than stock. Roughly 2" front and 1" rear lower.
It *might* be chopped original springs, but I dunno, it handles a little better than stock and doesn't ride any worse than stock springs.
BTW I wish I shaved the side mouldings.. The more I look at it now, the more I like it. They look clean as hell without them :(

Looking great!
My drill has two speed, High is 3300 rpm and Low is 1000rpm.
If I remember right, I used 1000rpm when I use rubbing compound with sponge pad (like 5cm thick sponge 15cm dia).
I tried 3300rpm but it is too fast and the coumpound went everywhere.
But when I press the drill+sponge on the body surface, the speed drops depending on the torque of the drill.
After removing all the compound I used 3300rpm polish with fur bonnet thing.
Compare to my hand, drill was X10 faster and especially final polishing, machine polishing makes shine much stronger.
Good luck!

I'm starting to like the colour. I can't believe how FLAT you got the panels, something the bodyshops around here have yet to grasp. I'm still fighting with the lines on my car. Hope to paint it this week.

Nah its not 100% perfect. Its kinda wavy, but not too bad. Its noticeable especially on the left fender and quarterpanel. My dad said unless you are really really good with the filler/sanding, you will never get 100% straight flat panels.
I don't really care, its better than most 'professional' shop would do. But again, I'm really happy on how the paint turns out :)

I remember the upper-mid creases as being particularly difficult to get right & consistent, being quite subtle in places. Likewise getting the fender gaps really good.
At least the gold shouldn't betray imperfections as much as your old Navy Blue would have. & there are always going to be faults that only seem to show up once you're nearly done.
It's coming togeather brilliantly & you're helping to make us all enthusiastic about our own projects now.

Man I know why offthahook is askin you about those clips. They are a pain in the butt to get out sometimes. And usually on a car of that age they crack and break. Good job taking it all apart the right way and taking your time. You did the job quick and did it right, which says a lot! Nice job! Your car really took a transformation!

I have no problems taking them out. The only clips that are broken are the one for the weatherstrip near the cowl thinggy and the bumper clips. I replaced the bumper clips with screws instead. The side mouldings are in perfect condition.
I've installed most of the interior parts, outside trims, painting the wheel wells black and reinstalled my system. No pics, it rained yesterday. I must say its near 95% completion and yes, photoshoot coming!
BTW should I leave the bumper overriders or should I take them off? They look clean without them but looks a bit bland, especially the front. Rear is alright without them. It goes well with shaved badges. Check my car domain page for pics of the bumpers with the overriders.
i like them, but it also looks pretty clean without them, so i'll say without :)

Nice work meng. On the rim painting... did you use any kind of high temp or any other special paint for those? I think you'd be okay, but the brakes definitely warm up the rims and I've heard of paint cracking on rims. I figured you just whipped your leftover paints and BAM it was gray.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/ullyeus/forum/3geez/DSC02069.jpg
I works!!!!! And yeah I know that the door is hacked so bad, but I'll clean up the edges and put a coat of paint on it. But with the door panel in place, nobody knows whats underneath. Thats the only way the motor would fit. I know they have kits for it, but hey this is 100% free!
I'm planning on using 3g door handle with the power window switches later, and do the other 3 windows.... maybe later.
More pics coming up.

Thats not too shabby man! Good work getting it mounted. Where are you gonna put the switch? :)

09-08-2007, 03:09 PM
For now I have a cheap generic switch mounted on the center console. I tried asking for the 3g door panel and they want to much and wont sell the arm rest alone.
My next plan is to add aditional motors in the other doors, reupholster the door panel, and probably the seats too. Tons of plans, so little budget.... :(
