110,000 on the odometer. Burns a quart per 1000 miles with no smoke (I get a small cloud on cold morning start-ups). Still 27 mpg and plenty of power. I am thinking it is either rings or valve seals. I'm taking it in for compression check tomorrow. Two questions.
1. What compression readings should I look for to eliminate rings?
2. If compression is good, is there anything to check or just replace the valve seals?
Thanks.

It's the valve stem seals. Can change them out using overhead valve spring compressor with that particular cylinder at TDC. (or compressed air constantly applied through plug hole) Compression reading shouldn't be lower than 130 psi give or take,or vary more than 20 psi. Good compression reading is about 180 psi.
I like a leak down tester to look at rings, cause I'm not a fan of the 'wet test' with squirting oil in the cylinders. If you have a dial indicator, you can check for valve guide wear with the valve.
