first of all.... am I seeing right when you say your car has 53K miles.
Is that Fifty-three thousand??
Damn youre lucky, she's not even broken in yet.
I have a 87 carbed and it idles high sometimes, at about 1750.

It will idle like that until the car is warmed up. But after about 5 minutes of running you should be able to touch the gas and it will drop down below 1k.

But we not talking warmup here, do we?
Does it go to normal when u lift the gas pedal with ur foot? If so, the throttle cable could be too tight..

i had a similar problem with my lude. After driving around for a little while and then stop at a stop light, or by the cops, my car would idle really high at times. (occasionally at 3k) the only way that i would be able to bring it down is by putting my foot under my pedal and pulling up. But your talking about idle. Is this after you drive the car, or only when you start it up?

clean the carb , check if the throttle cable doesn't get stuck anywhere ! check if the chokle is getting stuck !

when i first start the car up it idles... the carb is practically brand new.

you mean it idles high when your car is cold ! man that's normal it's called fast idle to heat up the car and drops after a couple of seconds ! ! :D

how do uclean the carb---bottle o' carb cleaner?

ACCORD EX

an aerosol carb cleaner and spray inside it while the carb is running be sure to press some gas while doing that or the car will shut off ! and spray all the linkages outside the carb too !

the fast idle can go upto 3K rpm to warm ur car. if it does not drop down even after ur guage shows halfway warmed and its about 30 mts in driving (which is what my car did). then its ur thermo valves bro.

Damn, this thread is haunting me.

My car idled @1800rpms this morning after 15mts from a cold start! The car was well warmed up. Although when i reached my destination my idle went back to normal. I suspect Fast Idle Unloader..

i have that problem but its the little valve on the throttle control line right by the diaphram...
it likes to no release the vaccum soethimes so it revs high and then drops ...

i know this becasue i just replaced it with one from the junk yard to test it and when it doesnt release the vaccum it wont drop.

U mean the check valve on #6 which goes to throttle controller diaphragm ?

i did have to adjust my fast idle once. try and turn it down just a little.

the easy way.. is when you first start your car up that morning or what ever...instead of turning it over and letting it run.. give it a good punch of gas.. this will release the choke form it's first stage...
then it will reach a slow idle speed sooner

how much of a punch do you give the throttle? because sometimes when i try that on really cold days it kicks the throttle up higher and i have to let it idle there for a minute before i can kick it down.

That's normal fast idle behavior when engine temp is below 15C (40F), #18 line is bled by the 3way thermovalve (2way yellow on my car ;) ), and the fast idle unloader is disabled.

But this thread is about 2000rpm when engine already warm!

correction:
15C = 60F

My car starts from cold at 2000rpm, few seconds later, give it some gas and goes down to 1500rpms, a few minutes later down to it's normal idle of 500-600 rpms. my car has 157k.

My car is weird. When it got below the cold temp and i start up it doesn't fast idle. But when i start driving the bugger after warming up then it starts to high idle a couple of times untill i tap my gas, or just go. Then it doens't do it for the rest of the day... weird huh?

An update for carb gays.
My electrical choke heater was intermittent, and lately it doesn't heat anymore. behavior: engine starts at high idle, kick the gas, it goes to last step of high idle ~ 1700rpm and stays there for 20..30mts function of outside temp. (choke flap looks like 45* instead of vertical), then goes to normal idle. Bad for torque convertors..
I'll try to get a heater from junkyard cuz a new one ~ $120CND :pissed:

Mine idles at 2000 until the temp needle hits the first hashmark, maybe takes 5 minutes. After that, it's smooth sailing at 700. It's normal. 1988, DX, 142,000 miles, carbed, 5 speed.

no no no!!! mine was idle right at 2000 rmp. mind u that this isnt good for ur transmission and axles. well neway wut i did was turned the screw that adjusts the idle speed. that worked but it was still at 1100 rpm. i used that carb cleaner, and now its gettin better gas mileage and is idle at 1000 rpm in park.

around last december my car just started sputtering and almost died on my way home from work so after my dad and i messed with the carb for a while all we were able to do was adjust the idle up to like 1000rpm to keep it running. now it just idles at 1000-1100rmp, which i don't like, but the car runs fine now.
