I'm trying to finish my 5 speed swap up tonight, but I'm having problems lining it up does anyone have any suggestions

Also can I use a 83 prelude tranny?

What do you mean lining it up? Do you mean so the dowels line up? If so you need to jack the tranny up enough so it looks like the dowels can go in, then lift the tranny by the 5th gear cover while someone guides it in.

ok yes that does help russiankid I'm gonna try that later tonight

Do you know if the ES series engines have different bolt patterns for the tranny than the A series?

The best I can do is just keep on trying with the tranny, and thanks for the help Russiankid

I worked on it all night and It still wont fit! Do you guys drop the engine so you have to put the tranny on at and angle?

I guess the problem I have is getting it around the flywheel, and then linning up the spline

if you are trying to fit ES series tranny into A series block it won't work.
get a right tranny.

Getting around the flywheel is easy. You just need to push the tranny all the way towards the passenger side chasis, then lift the tranny to clear the flywheel. Then lift the 5th gear side and it should go in. I didn't remove my engine when i did my clutch.

The ES and ET trannys will bolt up to the A series just fine. The problem is the flywheel. There is a smaller and bigger flywheel. The smaller ones are typically on the 1.8 liter engines and other Preludes. The A20's have slightly larger flywheels that won't fit inside the bellhousing on most Prelude trannys (the 1.8). Just make sure you get the flywheel and clutch that matches the transmission.

In your case, the 83 Prelude transmission will require the smaller flywheel, and will not fit around the A20 flywheel. Some on the site say that if you cut away some of the bellhousing, you can make it fit. I have no idea how or where to trim, so I would advise getting the clutch, flywheel and tranny from the 83 Prelude.

Oh yes, another thing... The 83 Prelude transmission is going to have smaller splines in the transmission for the axles. Your A20 axles will not fit, unless you make some axles by putting the Prelude inner ends on the A20 axles.

Well first off I should say I'm doing a auto to manual swap

Parts I have so far
83 prelude tranny
84 prelude Flywheel
83 prelude clutch
83 prelude drivers side axle

so whats my problem?

The mouts are somewhat close to lining up... the front lower one that connects to the engine

if the clutch fits the gearbox spline it should slide in, but a known problem with that is getting the clutch plate centered so it will slide on without issues providing those cursed dowell pins line up and arent bent

Yea thats my next step is to do that realign the clutch and try it again, but I'm first gonna see if the tranny will even fit on the engine. I'm then gonna realign the clutch

ok the 83 tranny will not bolt up at all. I did find a 85 prelude carb tranny so I will go pick that up tommorrow so well see how it goes

and if anyone needs an 83 transmission PM me please

Yeah, the 83 and 85 tranny should be the same. However, if whoever sold you that tranny thought it was for an 83, and it's actually an 82, well THAT is another story. An 82 is COMPLETELY different...

Yea I would be pissed if it was an 82, but the 83 clutch fit into it...:wtf:

So maybe I'll try to look up the tranny code somewhere?

But 2ndgenguy if you need any parts please tell me

But the flywheel will not fit at all over the tranny but I have some parts from a A18 that will tell me if it fits

Ok so I went and picked up an 85 prelude A18 tranny and it fit like a glove!

Now the passenger side axle won't fit so I don't know what to do :violin:

I think you have to use the Prelude axle. I had a Prelude transmission for a while. Seems like I used one Prelude axle and one Accord axle.
