View Full Version : having annoying issues with my TypeR upgrade

ZackieDarko
09-09-2007, 01:20 AM
i am trying to put my 01 TypeR calipers on my (what im told are) 88-89 front knuckles and i am very confused

keep in mind UPS fucked up and lost a caliper and maybe some other pieces i didnt know about?

ok i set the knukles in place but didnt tighten anything down (they are just siting in place) i hold the caliper to the spindle and it doesnt look like it will fit

i hold the caliper with its mounting holes to these (you know where the stock caliper mounts up)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a96/ZackieDarko/holes.jpg

if i do that the space between the pads where the rotor rotates is behind the hub

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a96/ZackieDarko/spindle.jpg

am i missing some kind of bracket here?

if the rotor were on the hub i would not be able to bolt the caliper to the knuckle ..i would have to hold it several inches away from the spindle for it to fit...which means it wont bolt up

so i guess i have 3 questions

1. am i missing some piece of hardware from the spindle
2. do i actually have 88-89 LX-i/SE-i hubs
3. was i fucked over by NAPA AGAIN and given the WRONG calipers?

where are your caliper mounting hanger brackets? look up majestic honda part catalog, seems like something is missing, also you may have to use another rotor

edit, you are missing the mounting piece for the caliper in the picture

i got the calipers from NAPA

made by RAYLOC part #'s 64120 and 64119

i am going to be so unbliveably beyond pissed off if either the calipers or the knuckles are the wrong parts

There is no bracket required at all. Either you have an 86-87 knuckle or the wrong calipers. Bolt the caliper to the bracket and take a pictures.

I think from the image you need the complete Type R caliper/bracket combo but ill let Legend commet on that.

When he says "you dont need a bracket" he means "you dont need a custom made bracket" is they way I read it.

I was gonna say something before but I wanted someone else to try it frist. Might want to add to your parts list Type R caliper bracket. its not always included with a new caliper unless you get "Fully loaded" or "complete" set up.

I have the part numbers somewhere Ill post them up when I find it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v667/Legend_Master/87eb2da0.jpg The caliper should bolt to two slide pins, that locate inside the caliper bracket, the bracket is what actually bolts to the knuckle. It sounds like you are trying to bolt the caliper on, without the bracket. he bracket is the narrow piece, closest to the rotor.

Yeah, they have the brackets. You are bolting the bracket to the outer side of the spindle, correct? Do you have the legend rotors yet? They may have more of an offset than the accord rotors... Can anyone verify this?

Yeah the accord rotor wont work with the Type r caliper and bracket. I can't remember which way the off set is I think the Accord is (thicker).

Hole to hole the caliper's bolts should be 5.500" from memory.

It looks like you have the right caliper, maybe LX-incredible is right and you are trying to bolt it to the wrong side of the hub. It should look like this.

This is the back of the hub with the caliper installed.

Just a few things to help:
the bolts come in from the rear, that bolt the hangar to the spindle
The caliper must come off the hangar to get the rotor on
Handle the hangar very carefully, any even slightest distortion where it was dropped or hammered, or bolted on unevenly , Will cause brake squeal that will not go away short of replacing the caliper bracket (hangar)

yep that set up would never appear right because the caliper should never be there without a rotor . heh heh.. but really somebody would never ever see it like that. It doesnt look entirely out of range for a rotor to be in that space though. Make sure you are not mixing up left to right parts in all this test fitting.:)

looks like you are getting some progress.
I was thinking... I am not used to seeing BOTH sides of the caliper mounting bracket so well machined. It is like they are mating it to something on both sides. But then I have never touched a Type R, just about dozens of other cars though.

russiankid

To me it looks likes it will work fine. The rotor does curve in, so you should put the rotor on and then the caliper and see what the clearance is.

it still stops very well though....100mph to 50mph happens real fast :-p

Right.

Tough those cars use the same caliper, I'm sure the bracket might be different. We need the Type-R bracket right? I'm sure other brackets could also fit but this needs to be digged into.
