Just a quick little shoot in front of this tight old building that I walk by sometimes. I love the old signs on it and just the general way it looks.. nice "urban decay" feel

Haha, J-Town represent! I love that building!

I've been hanging out around J-Town (San Jose Japantown) for years. I used to hit up Nikaku two doors down from that place for my Manga and Gundam models when I was in grade school. Not into those things as much now, tho you might've seen my spray painted black 3gee sedan parked near the temple, not far from where your car's at, or across from the Mexican restaurant on 4th, while I partake of the sushi boats at Kazoo, or get blasted and try to sing at the 7 Bamboo. :)

I've always imagined what that place would be like if someone fixed it up. A shame it's left to decay like that. Back in the day, before the front windows were busted out, they used to read "Nishioka Bros. Fish Market". Looks like there's a lot of history behind it. If those bricks could talk...

Wonder where the Nishiokas are now? Sadly, a lot a J-Towns seem to be on the decline. I read an article about it, either in the Merc or SF Gate. The latest generation of Japanese doesn't seem to have much interest in carrying on the family businesses, as they move on to become doctors or engineers. An example of this was the former Dobashi market on Jackson, which luckily was taken over by Nijiya, a Japanese grocery chain out of LA.

I'm not knocking the new generation for wanting to move on to bigger and better things, but at the same time, it saddens me to see the J-Towns fade away. Hopefully some will continue to carry the torch, so we can see them thrive for a bit longer.
