Probably just blow-by from the PCV breather. Check the PCV valve.

Pcv valve is something mine dont have.
duz sound like a pcv prob or you're gettin to much blow by from tired rings.
hook up an oil catch can and prob solved.
In theory your motor will run beter having no oil vapour in the inlet air

Maybe a squirrel is hopping up into your engine compartment and leaving you a little gift.

Does your car not vent excess crankcase gasses?

well that substance is oil and water mix. blowback plus moisture. i saw it in my oil pan when i dropped it for the first time. a good engine cleaner will fix that. change the oil every 500-1000 miles for like 3 times that should clean it up. aka it would be sludge

any 'bad breath" from the crank case just gets pushed out the cam cover breather and into the catch can.
the oil vapour collects in there and a vent hole with a filter on it lets the nice oil free air out to atmosphere.
There are some pics of my car posted in the pic forum thingee.
You can see the can on the back of the plenum chamber.
