I want to run a 10" sub woofer. I need some suggestions. I don't want a lot of bass so that my whole car shakes, but i want good quality sound. My budget is to not spend over $300. I heard that Alpine and JL Audio are good for a sub, but what about an amp. Any specific brands.

Also about a box, would it be wiser to buy a pre-made box? And what other things do i need, like wiring, cross overs, fuses. Keep in mind this is not a heavy system, just something to give me a thump.

Ported boxes give a boomy response. Get a sealed box if you like a good tight thump.

I found a few websites with the Alpine type r. About the same price as ebay. Only problem is finding an amp. Are there any other good amps that i can run besides the audiobahn a8000t?

for a mild thump, with realistic live music sound and not much but a little digital enhanced bump..and on a budget
I would get some cabinet grade plywood, 3/4 and some brackets for mounting.Or a box is good too but more money.... Measure your desired area in the trunk, use a 10 or 12 dual channel Pyamid sub, piggy back off a pair of rockford fosgate 6.5 round or 6x9 on the rear deck. feed them with good clarion equalizer/amp, You might have about 300 if that tied up in it.

Thanks for the help guys. For right now i am leaning towards this setup:
Sony 10" Voice-coil-subwoofer
Audiobahn DUB80001 Amp
Single 10" slot ported box

Only thing right now my brother mentioned was to match up the specs of the speaker (volume i guess?) with the box specs.

IMO... I know you don't have a big budget, but stay away from Sony Xplod, and Audiobahn for amps.

For your money you could probably get a decent JBL/Alpine/JL sub, and a JBL/Alpnine/Pioneer amp which would be much better. One thing to look into is a 2channel amp that you can bridge to run a sub. Most of the time these will cost less than a monoblock amp and still provide pretty good power. Also, sealed sub will sound the tightest, but not be too loud most likely considering the money youre spending... ported would be the next way to go, which will be louder, but wont sound as tight as the sealed, however it will probably hit lower frequencies. Some subs are designed to work a lot better in one or the other, so check that out too.

What is wrong with Sony Xplod?

Sonys been going downhill a while. The Xplod line is (considerd by most) mostly junk. My own personal experince with the Xplod stuff is that it works for a month or two, then it quits.

To be honest, Ive never been to impressed with Audiobahns stuff either. Granted, its all nice looking and not to expenstive. But really, for what it costs you could do alot better. IMO of course.

I think i found a better option and i like it:

The box is recommended to be 1.75 cu.ft, what if i run 1 cu.ft. Bad to do that? What will i notice?

If you want a tight sound, a ported box won't do it. It will be louder for sure, but droney and over-bassy compared to a sealed box. If you listen to bassy music anyways (hip-hop, pop, R&B), it won't matter.

explode is just fine as long as you know what your doing. don't overpower them pay attention to the specs like said. got 3 explode 12"s 2 1100's and a 1200, three explode amps 500 600 1000. I put them all in my hatch oneday for fun and it was F"ING AWSOME! the boxes were all pointed up so it hit me right on off the hatch i was afraid to break glass or somthing tho so back too one and two in 5th gen. walmart (i know) has a buid your own for $30 easy to do. explode 12" $60-$80 go with 400-600watt amp (i think it was $90-$120. ) if u want good sound get extra power and tune it down at the amp, don't get low power and try increasing it. ROCK ON MAN!
