View Full Version : Help my breezy 79

Winter's a comin' and it's going to be a cold one with the breeze blowing through my accord.

The door weatherstripping is shot, and the seal around the window is actually missing.

It's clear from searching this board, the web, and calling several dealers that all weatherstripping for the 1g's have been discontinued and are not available.

I've pretty much called every junk yard around here and none of them have cars this old, so I can't scavenge.

I have not tried a junk yard search engine like junkyarddog because I'm not sure about getting a good product from them.

Finally, my question:

Is there any DIY solution to weatherstripping? Has anyone ever made their own weatherstripping?

Thanks, as usual.

P.S. tomorrow, I'll give you a chance to play "name that part." I found a part free-floating in my engine compartment, and I don't know what it is. . .

Man, in the name of saving an Accord, let me look around town a bit. I've occasionally run into a car or two that people are parting out. In fact, I can think of one off the top of my head that might have good weatherstripping that's just sitting in this guy's yard. It's an '81, but might still have that stuff. Offthahook helped me find that car, and I even got a few good parts from it myself. That's something I forgot to snag while I was out there. I think he maybe has dibs on the weatherstripping, but he's cool and and let me snag it for you instead to save another 1g. :)

The door side window weatherstripping is at least a constant section & common to many cars so it shouldn't be hard to get from any old car or new from Auto rubber / restoration suppliers, other seals are a pain though with their formed corners & changes in section making them car specific... & hard to get nowadays.

Mine aren't too bad but I added an additional door seal on the bodies pinchweld flange around the door opening like Honda did on later models, this is a constant section running most of the way round the door & could be pulled from almost any car, though preferably with its pinchweld grabbing portion colour matched to your interior, simmilarly this should be available new from aftermarket suppliers. I actually wound up getting mine off a late '80s Toyota Vanwagon/Tarago after finding most equivalent Honda seals were moulded in black using the interior trims to cover them.

the thread on that:

& I still haven't done my clutch yet!

2ndGenGuy, thanks, and I'll gladly pay you the sum of One Million U.S. Dollars for the used weatherstripping. To complete the transaction please supply me with your bank account number, social security number, and your mother's maiden name.

79er, thanks for the lead. I had missed your thread. I might give it a try.

I think the name of the part I need for the window is called a "window run channel." Does that sound right?

Yes window run channel was the one I was thinking of for the "door side window" & should work from nearly any car & not too hard to get similar section new, if not from Honda, I think "Offthehook" had looked for that for one of his cars recently.

Sorry there's not much more than already said here in that thread, but might suffice/ partially substitute if your door seals were stuffed.

I am not really looking for a set if dude needs a set. They do tend to rot, especially if the old Accord spent most of its life outside. To get a nice, tight, perfect fit, you would want one one from a car exactly like yours. I would guess the 79 and 81 Accords used the same part number, but they did some revisions that might prove me wrong. You could get by with making your own from another similar car, but it might not be perfect. I would think it would be close enough if you got a set with a similar width. All I'm really holding on for is the valve cover from that car in the woods out in WA state. No rush really.

I'm sure those seals are no longer available new from a US Honda dealer. Good luck and we feel your pain.

Werd, that is my cue to give my new buddy Josh a call. He's got the '81 out in his yard. We don't really have huge problems here with seals drying out, but it does happen. I'll probably throw him $10 for the door seals if they're still good. I'm pretty sure they'll be okay. Maybe you could toss me a picture of exactly what you're looking for. It will probably be some time next week.

Lostforawhile, Thanks for the info. I didn't think of Whitney. I know Majestic doesn't have them, and I also called Rockauto.

I'll try to get some pics up here later this morning.
