Well I am a new 3g owner. I purchased a 1987 Honda Accord last Sat and found this group the next day.

My car is a silver 1987 Accord LXi and it is in (my opinion) remarkable shape considering its age. There are a few things that I have to get done (mainly due to the jerry rigging done by the former owners).

Things to do
#1 replace the drivers side cv joint. The people that had the car decided to sell it and did not want to put money into a car they were going to sell so what did they do when they found the boot was ripped? Thats right duct tape :). There is about 2 rolls of duct tape wrapped around the cv joint (which probably would not bother me too much but the joint is now clicking).

#2 tires, tires and did I say tires. There are 4 tires on this car (as there are on most) however mine are different sizes (well ok 1 is different then the rest). I noticed I was having some problems getting it home (was just having problems with it on the road, engine/tranny seemed fine). I got out and played "which of these things are not like the other" and found I had 3 14" tires and 1 13" tire. Luckily they left the 14" rim in the trunk. I may need to replace shocks but I really cant tell until I get the tires swapped out.

Other than the two above problems it seems to be in good shape. I drove it home (approx 60 miles) and didnt have a problem with the motor or the tranny. What more do you want for $800 :)

I basically just wanted to introduce myself to all (I am sure I will be here often). I will also have pics online soon.

Welcome! Don't be shy about using the search funtion before you ask questions, but either way people here are incredibly helpful and will take time to show you what's up.

Where do you live? There are quite a few regional meets that go on (esp in CA), so be on the lookout for those. Also, local 3geezers can help you fix broken shit if you're in a bind (not that these cars break ;) ).

Anyhow, enjoy!

Where do you live? Alex

I am in Arkansas. I will probably get most of the work done at the mechanics though, I am working around 60-70 hours a week :violin: so the time to work on my own vehicles is a bit short.

I have several newer vehicles but I wanted one that was a bit better on gas mileage (I have a dodge ram p/u and a jeep liberty so it dosent take much).

For the next month and a half I will be driving approx 150 miles a day and it adds up a bit. Granted the difference will not pay for the vehicle but it will be nice to have a 3rd vehicle (in case one of the others goes down).

not a bad price. the lx-i should get you around 30 mpg highway and like 25 in the city. but if you baby it alot you can get upto more...once i got 420 miles to the tank.

When I am used to getting 18-23 with the other vehicls (interstate) 30 would be a plus :>

I once got 35mpg out of mine with a 450 mile road trip, no stops, and a tail wind. You will probably find it cheaper, even at the shop, to simply replace the entire axle shaft with a remanufactured one. If they are both original you might as well replace both of them while you have it in if you can afford it. My mechanic used a Honda equivalent rebuilt part which means it is a lot better than your typical $80 part. Of course, it costs more. I paid about $400 for both, including labor.

Welcom to the board. These guys are extremely knowledgable, so any problems you have with your car can usually be solved on here. Don't be afraid to ask questions if in doubt. We don't bite. unless it's CAH posting more pics of his car. :Owned:

I will be replacing the drivers side one. The passenger side one looks pretty good (the boots are in great shape and it looks like it has been replaced). i expected worse with this car and am happy with what i got (heck even the power sunroof still works :>)>

Did these cars come with 13's or 14's? Mine seems to have 14's on it but the door panel said 13's? I guess it dosent matter because I am not going to find a set of 13" rims to put on it (not that I would want to) :>

Anyways what are good 14" tires to put on here (size wise).

Thanks for the help

The LXi's came with 14in x 5.5in from the factory. I have some aftermarket 14 x 6's on mine, but most on here end up going with larger diameter rims.

I have had a lot of tires on this car in 18 years. My favorites have been the Michelin, Kuhmo, and Yokohama brands. I hesitate to give you models because tire designs change so often that even with the same model the tire could be a lot different from what I bought years ago. It's almost always a trade off or balance among the traits of handling, tread life, and tire noise. It seems like you can't really get all three out of any set of tires. If you can find a knowledgeable person at a tire store they might be able to recommend something in a specific category, but you run into that issue again of continuous design changes. I have always used H-rated tires like since that is what came on the car. With them I seem to trade cornering ability for quietness and tread life.

Thanks, and I will keep you in mind for the future. Unfortunatly right now I simply don't have the time to work on it. My mechanic said he would rather replace the entire axle anyways. I dropped it off tonight and we will see how much he gets me for tomorrow.

Well it is back from the mechanic. They replaced both the axle and a Tie Rod end. They did find a transmission leak (I am guessing at the axle seal) and told me that it was "leaking bad" and that I needed to get it to a tranny shop.
