Figured I would start an update thread today as I removed the lip of my car.
Before:
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/PhotoshootWinter2k74.jpg
After:
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/LipGone.jpg
and put it in its proper place! lol:
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/Lipingarbage.jpg

Before removing the lip I also removed a spoiler that the previous owner had put on!
Before:
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/Back.jpg
After:
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/HondaRear.jpg

And yes as you have noticed I also added a high flow muffler to give it a nice deep tone.

Thanks for all your opinions on how a 3gee should look

Yeah, I will start on rust right after I take care of a short list of mechanical probs. I gotta replace 2 or 3 sensors, a Tie rod is loose so I'm just going to put a new 1 in, and I also have a warped brake drum in the back. Thanks ^_^

My future plans are after taking care of the mechanical problems are:
- a nice pair of 17's for sure
- Short Ram intake for sure
- repairing rust issues for sure
- getting a full pacesetter exhaust setup when $ is available
- Sway bar if i can find one
- MSD blaster coil
- MSD ignition if possible
- lightening my car, starting with my dead AC which is not even hooked up LOL
- Possibly installing sport springs of some sort + lower an inch or 2
- possibly a rear disc brake conversion

Its a rough list I am going to take 1 at a time, I'm also going to try to save for another daily driver so i can get rid of my beater car...I'm kinda urking for another Honda of some sort.

Well, i got bored and found out the little piece below my rear tail light that is rusted to all hell is only held on by a light weld and 2 10mm bolts. Today I removed it and am buying the same piece I need off of CAH's parts car ^_^ I'm going to sand it, prime it, and have it matched up to my car's color...it should make my 3gee's ass look a lot better
Almost forgot to mention today its almost 40*f outside! Had to do a little work on my 3gee while it is semi-warm, been a while since ive seen her.

And here is another pic of the empty hole awaiting the piece to fill it that i ordered from Dark_Accord. It isn't that bad looking in real life, the picture makes it look really dirty but its rather clean inside of it lol

Was defiantly planning on it, any kind of anti-rust paint in particular? Will Rustolium work or what would u recommend?

03-12-2008, 11:56 AM
Finally starter her up today after sitting for over 4 months without touching it due to cold weather.... 3 cranks and it fires up on all 4cyls without a hickup...but I had to charge the battery of course lol.
Needs fresh gas tho, the exhaust smelled bad from the nearly 6 month old gas that sat in it all winter...only a 1/4 tank but it still runs off of it, The coolant looks kinda like it needs to be changed soon, its still a shade of yellow but it looks old....ah the wonders of needing all the fluids changed from having a car garaged all winter...

Sweet, its here! Now to just get the badge cleaned up and get the trim sanded and painted Navajo Red/Burgundy and high gloss clear-coated.

You guys think i should leave the backing white on the badge and just remove the paint so the letters are shiny or should i paint the backing black with the silver letters?

Why don't you just get a new badge?

GraniteLXI
03-15-2008, 03:04 PM
Well, this one was free, i actually just got done chipping away the remaining white paint on the letters.... i know its a bit tedious for such a small piece, but all i have left to do is get a small black touch up kit that i can brush over the backing of the letters. Basically just easier to work with what I got :)

russiankid
03-15-2008, 03:17 PM
I'd repaint it black and then silver over the letters.

Does that piece weld in or what?

GraniteLXI

Actually its held in by this strange black bonding material, almost like a plasticky type of glue, but its strong. So no, it actually isnt welded on, it cant be because all it is is a plastic mold with a coat of silver as a base coat, and then filled in black coat in the background.

Ah, I was just going to use a little epoxy to hold the side of the trim in that doesn't have the bolts holding it down, I think normally that it is tack welded in lightly.

Use some JB weld instead. The epoxy may not hold to well, then one day washing the car the piece falls through:Owned:

I would ask some people on here for advice on this.

JB weld does sound better, just rough up the 2 edges to join together and bam, done! lol The piece wouldn't fall out, all it would do is rattle, the 2 10mm bolts actually hold it in very well.

Does anyone else have a suggestion on how to join the free end of this piece of trim or does JB weld sound good?

Hmm i may just replaced mine instead of trying to fix it. How do you remove it from the free end anyways?

GraniteLXI
03-15-2008, 07:07 PM
To remove it you have to remove the plastic trunk cover that covers the desired sides' tail light assembly, or if your trunk is stripped then u dont have to worry, all u have to do is look for 2 10mm bolts that are about 2 inches apart-ish that are right below the tail light assembly (you dont have to remove the tail light assembly either just to make it clear) Its a very easy find!

:gun: As far as the free end with the weld goes you may have to twist or pry the end to break it off...if you are replacing it with a new piece then you don't have to worry about screwing up the old one :) Just be careful about the piece it is connected to if it happens to have any rust, luckily mine didn't, only that one piece on that side. I need to pick up a dremel and clean up the other side, its beginning to rust but is still very savable.

I like that fart can lol. Its really not bad, all it does (because its all carbon fiber) is deepen the tone, its not loud or raspy or make a ricey sound (it better not for $140). Will look good when i get it lowered and some nice high gloss black rims on it :)

I call it a high flow muffler, a fart can costs $20 lol

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/Newtrimpainted.jpg
It came out very well, I'm going to let it cure for another day or so before installing, will look awesome to not have a hole in the back below that tail light :)

Edit- Wish i could find a silver close enough to the stock rim color and repaint the damn caps silver... maybe ill just repaint all the rims a stock silver color?

And yes, that spot where the badge goes is going to be covered up by a badge, the black crap that holds the badge in place is a pain to get off so i didn't put a ton of effort cleaning it off if its going to be covered by my badge anyway.

Just a few mechanical updates-
Today i changed out the two water housing sensors (Temp & Rad thermal switch)...its so nice to have a radiator fan again XD. Installed the "new" main relay...wow that was a bitch of a job and i did it without tools....still gave me a bit of hell... lol.

All that remains is installing the "new" egr valve+sensor and i need a new gasket for that, along with a new tie rod end and a PS hose.

Thanks, The claybars work well? Ive seen em at work, you just rub a little on, swirl it around and dry it off? I know after i get my last few mechanical kinks worked out im going to get a rotary tool and grind out the remaining surface rust and touch up those spots with my factory paint.

My stimulus check will hopefully be able to cover my last 2 issues:
-Outer tie rod (I think, mostlikely why my driver side front wheel will rock in and out a bit if u shake it from 12-O-clock and 6-O-clock positions)
-Main PS Hose (mine has a dripping leak thats very slow :( )

Wheel shake when yer hands are at the 6 and 12 is bad ball joints or wheel bearings aint it? I'm not good on the suspension checking but tie rods would be movement from the 9 and 3 position I think.

Can someone more knowledgeable answer this before he spends money on something he dont need?

Well, this is more of a personal update. Today a family member got me into The Door County Co-op, a hardware/lawn and garden store that has Napa Auto parts and a few other stores in with it. The pay is almost DOUBLE of what im making right now at walmart!!! Also working there i can buy all parts from any sections of the store for 10% over the store's cost for that item. So in essence i can buy auto parts for both my Honda's at 40-60% discount! I will be spraying lawns, working outside. I then will get my liscense to spray after they train me and by the end of the year ill be making $13 an hour! During the winter I will be working in the store as a normal worker but making the same amount an hour as I do during the summer spraying lawns. Tomorrow morning I go in for the interview and to get everything taken care of. Since family is getting me in its practically a for sure thing. I'm just excited and had to say something, this is a good move foreward and it feels good that I will finally be getting the break ive been looking for.

 Today my mechanic and I changed out my old EGR valve...turns out the valve was okay but the passage running to it and out of it were both BLOCKED shut with carbon. We pooled it with some carb cleaner and let it soak a bit, then managed to push away all the carbon with a bent coat hanger.
I cant believe how bad carb cleaner smells when the shit burns, damn... also the mechanic bounced it off the redline once to clear the remaining of the carb cleaner out of it. Kinda scared me because ive never had my 3gee touch the redline before.

It never felt so good driving home and not having to see my CEL come on after it warms up

Bad news...
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/reararmfailure2.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/reararmfailure.jpg

My rear upper control arm broke free right as I was leaving town and I was speeding up to 70 on the highway...it broke around 50 mph. Any faster and im sure the tire would have blown and who knows if Id even be here right now :sadwave:
When it went it was just a clunk and i really didn't think much of it until i could smell my tire burning up against my rear strut, which was seconds later.
Its being trailered back up here and im going to have both rear upper control arms replaced. The driver side arm looks like its about ready to fall apart too.

wow that is scary
can you say... rear wheel steering ... that you can not control.. I think that is way worse than the front coming out.
this is an important area for everybody to be concerned with, no doubt about it

Well, my 3gee is all fixed up, only $76 to replace both upper arms in the rear...not bad at all :) Glad to hear that no damage was done to my strut when my wheel fell into it at 50 mph, or any other parts for that matter.
I'm going to pick her up next payday...I miss not having it in my garage allrdy even though my EF civic hatchie gives me good company too.

Sadly its all oem (but a whole new main pipe from the flex pipe back!) Other then that is just an over priced carbon fiber 3a muffler....it sounds good tho, not the usual cheap fart-can sound :)

More of a personal update, today i found out I passed the exam for my job, which means a $2/hour raise and being certified at my job for 5 years til i have to retake it. This was such a relief for me to find out, been eager to know all week!

As for my 3gee this means I will have my foot in the door and be set to keep my discount at my job for auto parts (50%+ discount on most parts!!) and have more money for both my beloved Hondas.

Got my thermostat changed today as i put up in my technical post from the heat problems i had. All looks well now, just i need to get it re-timed, valves adjusted, main PS hose replaced, and a bad brake drum on the rear driver side fixed (Makes a odd creak sound when braking, its kinda off and on)

The rear wheel cylinder are a PITA on the accords. I usually replaced those everytime I replace the drums.

Yep, I'm still around...just been busy working over 40 hours a week. I recently found a shop that will install my struts/coils on my civic for $300ish (includes alignment too :) ) Vs the 1st $1000 quote i got....damn was that a ripoff quote lol.

All this means i might be able to get the work done on my accord that i had mentioned earlier this year before i put her away for winter. ^^

Today i did a simple swap of the front rims on my cars because the borbets are not made for winter use and i dont use my 3g during winter anywho. I have to admit they borbets look pretty good on my 3g

Well, today I bought a new battery for my 3gee, and I also fabbed up a SRI that was a FUCKING pain in the ass- had to cut the intake pipe 3 times til I finally got it to just fit decently haha!
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/Newintake.jpg
The hood closes okay, I do notice if I look under while I lower the hood it pushes down on the filter just a little.
Other then clearing out the engine bay and adding a bit more throttle response I like it, i doubt it added much of anything as far as HP...well maybe- the OEM intake design had to be made by someone on drugs of some kind :slap:

Oh, and on a side note I haven't started this car for almost 6 months since I put it away- It started right up without a hiccup in 2 cranks...if that doesn't rock I dont know wtf does

Just a small update, I fixed my sri by adding a small 60* bend, so no more hood bumping :)
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/SRIfinished.jpg
I also attempted to clean my iacv but i could only get it off by about 1/4 of an inch because it butts up against some steel lines. I sprayed it down from what i could, at first i thought it worked but to no surprise the idle began to surge again. I will have to take it off on a day where i got more time to take that all apart to get to it.

Another small update. I installed new NGK Vpower spark plugs to replace the old bosch +2's (which actually looked really clean so i kept them) and I also got rid of my cheap Autozone spark plug wires and replaced them with the HE39 NGK wire set. I like the look of the blue wires, looks sharp!

Next update should be my valve lash job....I'm almost tempted to buy myself a feeler gauge, valve cover gasket and try and do it myself. (I also could strip and repaint my valve cover while I have it off) Only thing is I dunno how to get to TDC...I mean isnt it TDC when the arrow points up on the cam? Also while im asking, what should the distance be on the valve lash?

MessyHonda
06-03-2009, 10:56 PM
the valve lash is underneath the hood...make sure you do it after the engine is cold

Well today I picked up a 17mm socket and a feeler gauge!
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff14/GraniteLXi/Valvemovement.jpg

Yep, you guessed it, I'm getting ready for a valve lash adjustment. My VC peel'd off very easily, the gasket appears to be very new and from a glimpse under the timing belt cover the belt looks new-ish too!

Tomorrow im going to remove all the spark plugs and jack the front diver side wheel up, pull it off and then turn the crank bolt to get each cyl to its proper TDC, setting the exhaust valves to .010 and the intake valves to .006 (or whatever the middle # is of the 3 sizes, I think it was 6 if I remember right) Currently as it sits the exhaust valves seem to be at about .015 or slightly higher clearance and my intake valves feel the same as the exhaust- .015+, they ALL move....I mean I can pick them up by the adjust-screw locking nut and move them up and down!

I'm following this guide:
http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39319

By the general looks of it this should really quiet down my engine, I wonder how long if at ALL ago that this was done to the car.

Status update! This was probably by far my first completely solo job that was semi-major. I didnt find it too difficult...I could use much better tools then the small set I got. Oh well got the job done :)

I took the car over to my mechanic friend Louie after I finished the job at my apartment and he told me I should be proud, my 2 hour valve lash job turned out very well! There is virtually no more tapping sound that used to come from the out of spec valve lash and it runs a bit smoother! :) Only fail is I got a few scratches and got a little bloody when the wrench would slip and I would smack the back of my hand/knuckles right up against the sharp adjustment bolts ><

Tomorrow I'm going to try adjusting the fitv or whatever is on the back of the intake mani, I was told there is a little black screw I can adjust inside of it and it can get rid of a hunting/bouncing idle if you turn it down. I did try cleaning my IACV btw.

EDIT: Woot, I just turned my FITV down a little while my idle was bouncing/hunting and it stabilized out! I even turned it back up to check and the idle began to bounce again. Easy fix FTW!
