Had to bend this wrench to get it in there...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/tie-rod09.jpg

Done!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/tie-rod10.jpg

Actually had to take the bolts off the rack so that we could lower it enough to get the wrenches on.

Thats all the pics I have now, went to the shop(got on the hoise a-ok too!) for an alignment and I was actually pretty good, within 1 degree heh. Rear is good, the front I have a little negative(it's maxed out on the lude arms) which is good anyways.

Been driving around and everything feels pretty good, I adjusted the idle down(it was near 1500, now around 800-900) and the surge is gone! So far anyway, it has not come back which I'm stoked about! It's nice to have a normal idle, and it feels like it's running overall better. However there is still some slight stutter/hestation and things keep leading me to think that the timing belt might be off a tooth, it will run like shit with normal timing so it make sense. Anyone else think so?

Need moneys so I can do obd1 swap soon.

:edit: Oh and I think I might back off the shifter some, it feels like shifting with less leverage so it's almost harder to shift, mind you its very short. I don't want to take that exhaust back out though.. if I can do it otherwise I might. :edit:

Timing sure makes a difference in how it runs for sure. If you throw a light on it and its wrong put it back in timing right then you will defenetly see a difference when you correct it.

Thanks for the comments.

Sounds good bullard, let me know haha.

Well, after reading numerous threads/posts on the timing belt and such.. it would make sooo much sense if it was off a tooth or two. I just haven't had the time to check it out yet, soon though.

I bought the wire holder from the local Lordco autoparts, it was for a v8 and I just made it work.

Got my battery swapped in today and made a how to about it.

Nice work! This is the first I've seen of your car.

Damn man, in that case, I suggest you flip through all the prior pages. See, there's another one like you that cares about the details too.

Andrew, I demand you wipe the crap off that gold plated valve cover. Nice choice on the battery. I'm so pissed, there's a guy locally that was selling one basically new for $75. Considering I paid $180 for mine with the bracket, that's a steal. How much were you able to get that for?

What 'wires' are you saving up for now?

You know, after looking at the pics of your intake piping, it looks like 2.5" piping. I wonder if a 2.75" or 3" piping might just help it breath a bit better. Dunno though. Still such a fresh setup you have there.

So when are you going to make the drive to CT? I wanna see that damn thing so bad.

Ahh you caught me, it's filthy. It was cheaper in the beginning but it ended up a bit more then I expected, I should of got the battery local.. that would of saved some coin(lession learned ).

I have to get some new battery terminals + bigger wire, the ones I'm looking at right now are some rockford fosgate ones(nice and small) but no one local has them. Oh well the search continues.

I think you could also go with a bigger pipe like you say, I think I will when I eventually upgrade my IM/TB.

Thanks Mark, I'll come down there after some fresh paint! :D

Well after portland it became apparent that my rear main took a real shit.. I couldn't afford it and payed for it with oil. There is oil spray all the way back to the gas tank and on everything... oi

Amazingly the clutch never got touched, so I got enough coin to replaced the cv seals and rear main(honda, ouch $) oh and the oil pan was leaking too, got one from honda(70$ fuck).

I adjusted the shifter so it wasnt so low maybe it will feel nicer. Just cleaning everything off and yea... should be all done tomorrow I hope and better not god damn leak!

Did you just tell him he had a nice ass and car? Oh man, I knew something was up with you. haha.

Nice progress Andrew. What the hell did you use to get that tranny so sparkly clean? Mine looks just like that first pic of yours (covered in sludge), but I don't have the time to spend cleaning it all out so nicely. Honestly I think I'll be in the exact same boat on the rear main too as I just re-used the old one and realized after it was in that I didn't grease the snot out of it. Fingers crossed, hopefully it'll at least hold up for a little bit.

Yep, I'm still in awe of your car.

Even taking the heat shielding off to clean, that's just what I would do! Good work.

I always just attach the old pressure plate to the flywheel with a single bolt and let it wedge against the ground or something while I torque the flywheel bolts. Works like a charm.

Yes it was quite filthy, I had to adjust the shifter anyway so I figured I better do it while it's out! I got the flywheel in with someone holding a big pry bar jammed in the ring gear through the timing hole. I noted your method though that sounds foolproof.

Ahh the magic of pictures.

Well holy fuck it took me a lot of cursing, lifting, moving, nudging, etc etc and I FINALLY got the damn thing in the hole. Good christ that is not a job I want to do again by myself.. that thing is heavy! Got everything filled up and so far so good, new clutch feels good and its nice to have everything clean and dry.

Took me a while even though I busted ass and was way over what I thought I would spend but it's nice to have it all done.

OBD1 next... as soon as I find a damn ecu, and I can get the time to do it of course.

So far I have collected the ihi turbo(with manifold/dp/motor mount), 390dsm injectors, oil feed line(another oil pan with the return). Now I have just been making a list of what else I need... still lots of parts and money to be spent haha.

It should be a sweet little turbo for me, and a great place to start my boost experience.

Nice work man. Were you able to find it local?

Yes, myself and a friend went looking in pnp for some misc parts for his jeep and I wanted to take a look in the import section.. well I told him what I was looking for and while I was walking around I get him telling me he finds one. Well I had assumed it was a previous one I had found but this must have been a new row of cars! They were untouched and there was this red 93 beauty sitting there waiting for me. It was awesome. I have to get my rotors machined and then I should be good.. hope to be running next week.

Hoorah! (forgive the phone pictures, it's the only camera I have)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip87.jpg

So I just finished tinkering with my baby and adjusting misc things. Got her fired up right away after I figured out the proper firing order, and she runs like a champ!

I swapped in an 88 speedo cable and a 92 teg clutch cable which cleaned up things quite a bit, those old ones were seriously 2-4' longer.

Unfortunately I can't go for a drive because I am waiting for my rotors to get machined.. but so far she seems to run better, quieter, improved response. I want to go for a drive :(

So yet another problem is fixed.

I guess the cv boot on the left axle has been torn for a little bit and that was the source of my problems.

It starts out here:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip88.jpg (http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/?action=view&current=wip88.jpg)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip89.jpg (http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/?action=view&current=wip89.jpg)

This son of a b wouldn't come off so I cut it(I had an extra fork), and got a new bushing pressed in.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip90.jpg (http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/?action=view&current=wip90.jpg)

New!

Installed:

omg wtfbbq!?!?!? ur gonna be boosted and OBD1!! U SOB! lol i love your car man. Its what i want my future hatch to look like(if i ever get one haha). how much did the OBD1 run you all together? i need to start pricing/saving up for a kit.

Yea, boost is next! It's going to be a while, I still have a lot to get..

As for the obd1 parts, well I got the plate from cygnus and harness from lx-incredible which made it really easy. After that it was the 4 wire O2, and the pr4 ecu. So depending on what you can source or what you want to do on your own I would say 300-600$.

Thanks for the comments!

This setting on the coilover is with the spring perch at a snug level and the shock mount screwed all the way in. It's too low for me and will cause serious damage if I keep it like this!

I will change the height tomorrow to something more suitable for my driving range. I will also play with the damper settings over the next while to see what it's like.

So far the ride is way better then that old shit(obviously, these are actually made for my car!)

Oh yea, now maybe I can finally use that DC bar I bought years ago.. it's really very nice to see those top hats gone.

Those a K sports fully adjustable Coilover setup. Best setup made for are car to date. IM getting that very very soon. The fact that you can control the damping. O man i can already see the difference.

Roach whats up man. You boosted that A already? how the Ks doing.

87roach
08-06-2010, 11:25 AM
Yo, no I haven't boosted yet.

I have been working out of town for the last while now... I have nearly all the pieces for the turbo(got them months ago). I do need to get a welder and stuff because I want to do my own fab work so I am working towards that.

I will have to take lots of pictures of the goods, I got a lot of shit to put on the car haha.

The ksports are nice, I went with the stock spring rates. So far I have put on a good couple thousand km's and they are feeling good. I have been trying to figure out this "wheel" shake issue I have been having for a while... I have replaced nearly everything in the front end except for a couple bushings and everything is solid. I put my rims back on with the summer rubber and it feels better but it's still there... so I am going to take it into the shop next week and try to get them to fix it haha.

It would be sick to be boosted this year, even if I did get all the stuff on I don't know about tuning and such.. it would probably be winter by then but I am going to try!

Thanks for checking in, hope you're doing good man.

Rendon LX-i

Thats good to hear. you can always run it on a base map and go to a tuner to let it rip on. Good to hear you got some goods. I just got the accord running really looking forward to Tune ....on chrome pro. Pretty stoked. Shaking issue seems odd. you try your torque rods to see if there loose or a rotor prehaps. A bent wheel. Never hurts to take em to a tire shop to see if your wheels are TRUE. and do a good balance. tape weights in and out of the rim not just the outside. It can be 0.00 on static balance but you wont get a true balance. let us know man. great work regradless

Well, for a long time it has been very quiet in my shop.. sometimes I would use the iphone for music but it would be annoying to change song's with greasy hands, etc.

So my good buddy offered me his deck for free and I was thinking of putting it in my no-stereo car. Well, I figured I could deal with it for a bit longer and install the deck into the shop!

After deciding where to put it, what would be easy to access, and take the least damage I figured instead of hanging it in some stupid place I'll just mount it in the bench!

I had a few chargers laying around from when I was toying with R/C car's and found one with enough power to run the deck.

The only thing I actually bought were the 4 alpine 5"x7" speakers from pick n pull at 8$ each(boo-yah), also got some speaker wire from there and had more laying around.. I just pieced it all together with help from friends. There was a lot of wire used to go to each corner of the shop.

Work's great for the price! :D runs the ipod but no cd's or radio.. which is really all I want anyway.

You can't really slap a traction bar together, and unless you're doing some serious modification it won't be necessary. Not that I would slap anything together but I'm not an engineer.

I want to get the hatch in the shop soon but there are too many thing's to do first :( plus I don't have all the part's yet.. maybe I'll take some pics of those or something for now.

It's from a V8 plug holder set, pretty much the cheapest one I could find at the part's store. I think I will figure something out for my next setup.

Thank you! It's a pleasure to know that you enjoyed reading it :D

As for the k-sports, it's been around half a year since I've driven the hatch and felt them. I enjoyed the feeling of them, they are nice and tight, I was also playing with the settings and I can't remember what they are at anymore.. as for daily driving, I mainly just drove long distances on the weekends(due to working out of town and not needing to drive, except for then). I didn't have any problems and I like feeling the road, I look forward to driving it again.

As for adjustment you can see from the pictures that the full height is stock and the lowest is probably 3", I think it would be closer to a 2-2.5" drop safely. I just lowered the spring perch to the bottom on all of them so that I could still have travel, I believe I moved up the back a bit(1/8"-1/4") so that there was even wheel well gap. I may go back and adjust them again though.

Once I get my turbo sorted out I will be using it as a daily so I'll be able to give a more accurate review.. that's in the future though haha.

Well I've finally gotten the shop to a state of organization I like, it's not 100% yet but it has come a long way.

I also managed to pretty well finish my welding cart, minus some chain and possibly a handle.. oh and paint too. Turned out pretty good considering I haven't welded for 7+ years and the only thing I bought were the two front wheels, everything else was free :D

I've also got to get a sheet of steel for the bottom part at some point.

Now I can finally bring in the hatch and start putting on the goodies I bought a year ago.

Nice welder.....been looking at the smaller Miller units for a while some time for smaller home use sort of stuff. My internal debate has been go with something similar with the spool gun for aluminum or go with a TIG as well just for the sheer flexibility of it all. Really digging having a Syncrowave 200 and a Millermatic 350P at my disposal at work (even better because I am the only guy in the shop that can TIG aluminum).

May have to beat on my Greggs or Lordco rep to see what kind of greasy deal he can cut me on a wee 120V mig machine (not planning on doing anything thicker than 1/4" at home any time soon)

It's really nice to have tool's like that at your disposal, and a real bonus if you're the only one using them so you don't have to deal with it when someone fucks it up.

This machine should do everything I want for a while, maybe one day I'll learn to TIG.

Today's update:

So today I pulled in the hatch after shuffling all the car's in the driveway around.

After I warmed it up for a bit I did a compression test after I got it in the shop. Which was a difficult task by myself and with a dead battery(duh, I grabbed a working one).

It went #1 = 175, #2 = 175, #3 = 185, #4 = 183

I took multiple reading's of each cylinder and those were the highest. I also put a bit of oil in each cylinder after those readings and got higher reading's(around 190-200ish), so I don't think my ring's are the healthiest.. :( The engine was also cooling down so I don't know if this affected my reading's along the way. It's still pretty healthy but I thought it would be better.

So I drained the fluids and took off the hood, these are more of a before picture:

The motor mount I got with the turbo needed modification to the block for it to fit:

Just grinding off the nubs in the way

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip115.jpg

The mount is in but the bottom doesn't line up, I also think it drops the motor some so I'd have to modify it anyway. I'll get that done when I find a piece of plate to use.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip116.jpg

Enough of that, I want turbo!!

I had to move over the dipstick a tiny bit but this is a test fit anyway, to see what'll need modification.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip122.jpg

It's from the 2.3l supercoupe tbird, should be plenty for me now, no point in blowing it up if it can't handle it. I also don't really get rev happy so it should be good fun. As for the motor mount I can take some snap's after I modify it and finish it up.

Looking awesome man! I don't think the compression numbers are that big of a deal to worry about. Maybe a little wear, but meh, it'll probably still run forever. As long as they're within a certain percentage of eachother, you're fine (according to the FSM). 180 is a pretty healthy number as far as I know. I think you'll only get near 200 if you have tighter ring gaps or run those gapless rings...

Very clean indeed! Nice work so far.

I usually do my compression tests with the engine at normal operating temps. I definitely find the readings are lower when it's cold. Also, the efi motors should read around 175psi nominal so those readings are actually pretty good unless you have non stock pistons??

The piston's aren't stock to my knowledge. The engine was at normal operating temp before I started but it could only cool off while I got setup and during the test so.. I don't know if it would really be a significant increase but I don't know. After the head goes back on I will get someone's help and do another test. Oh and yea that's what the book said were good number's so I think I'm okay for now.

I agree man, everyone always outgrows what they want, thus we have the crazy world of automotive lovers. I think the power band will be fun and I will learn a lot, and then be able to further research what a good upgrade for my application would be. Much thank's coming from you Pico! I hope your hatch is working out for you.

There's a lot more in store for this little hatch yet :D It's just getting all the time to do it.. heh since just about everything is custom it takes a lot of patience to get all the work done.

oh so true. takes so much time to get aftermarket stuff done on these cars.

btw, what are you going to do exactly for your catch can set up? just going to vent the vc?

Put another line in for the vc, tap a hole for a vent in the catch can and add a drain. I'll also chop off that oil pipe one the pan and weld it up.

I was working on this a while ago and I just got around to finally getting it on the pillar now. I think I got the wrong one but whatever, I'll make it work. I figure I'll try and sort the wiring out once I get this in place.

Gauge pod turned out pretty sweet, I couldn't get a good picture of it inside the car though.. once it's all painted up I will be happy with it.

Still all the heater and ducting to come out to get at the wires, yay..
