Thank GOD I kept my hatch harness so I can snag all the wires I need from there. Awesome!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip188.jpg

It'll end up something similar to this plus the battery cables, in this corner.

This is gonna look nice after it's all done. I love wire tucks but I don't have the patience to do it to my own car.

BTW, I hate doing pedals too. I thought the 3rd gen was frustrating but the 4th gens were no better.

What does that window visor say on the corner there? There is no such visor that is OEM for our cars as far as I know so I'm just curious to know who actually made some.

Got this done a while ago... I finally did some more work on the car today so I'll probably do another update this weekend.

More chaos!

MSD box and fuse box tucked away.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip195.jpg

I've got the pillar gauges wired in, the pillar's painted black(sem plastic/vinyl primer and sem satin black vinyl paint) and they turned out good.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip196.jpg

Trying to sort out the cabin before moving onto the engine bay, but they kind of go hand in hand.. it was nice to finally get some work done today so I think I'll keep going for the next few days.

More:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip198.jpg

I'm going to have all the wires come through that large hole(made it too big.. oops, I'll make sure to fix it so nothing comes into the cabin)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip199.jpg

Got this side tucked a while ago, turned out good.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip200.jpg

Gauges in, well half.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip201.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip202.jpg

I know I keep showing the same wires over and over and over, but I actually am making progress on them haha. I think I have this area sorted out so I can get the pain-in-the-ass-pedals back in.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip205.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip204.jpg

I also got all the speaker wires run with proper length(before they had just been fished through under the dash, and that was not acceptable).

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip203.jpg

Getting closer..

The fuse box is secured with the bracket that held it in the engine bay, it's a bit flimsy but holding quite well. I had to cut it up to make it work, I might be able to get some up close shots for you. I also don't have A/C, this placement would not work for it. I will post a picture of the whole thing before the dash goes on so you can see.

Yea if you could get some up close shots that would help me. I think I have an idea of how you might have done it and it seems to work for you. Maybe i can improve on your idea as well :D

Also i dont have A/C either, I saw on some other forum that someone made an "A/C box delete duct" for the older CRX and from the pictures it looked very similar to our cars setup. Did you find one of these or is there one made specifically for our car? I've been trying to figure out how to get rid of that huge box...

There is a duct made specifically for the car, I will show you when thing's go back together, I'll also try to get some snaps soon of the fuse box.

I got a bunch more done this weekend, some cabin wiring but mainly engine bay wiring. I had to shorten/lengthen a few wires so far and replace a few connections. Getting pretty mint and should have some clean pictures soon. Today I took off the manifold and downpipe, welded on a new flange for the dp, an o2 bung for the wideband, I also welded a piece onto the manifold and tapped it for my egt probe. Going to get those sent off to the powdercoater this week. Will get some picture's up of when I get them back.

Thanks man.

So I finally got my exhaust back from the powder coater, got a nice deal too :D

Here are the before pictures from the work I mentioned I did in my previous post:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip206.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip207.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip208.jpg

Cleaned up the ports on everything, added the o2 bung, and the egt patch.

After:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip209.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip210.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip211.jpg

Turned out awesome, I just got the "burnished" because I'm wrapping it anyway and there's no need to pay the extra for "polished".

Got these a while ago...

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip212.jpg

Finally put them on today.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip213.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip214.jpg

It's darker because it was still wet in the pictures, they turned out pretty good. It was harder then I thought but I took my time and made it look good. The wrap on the manifold started to fray a bit of sorts because I wrapped it around so many times. I like it and it should work fine.

I got that done today, I also put the turbo back together, installed a new oil filter base gasket, some other misc tasks, and finished the front mount(just have to weld it and paint it tomorrow). I haven't worked on the hatch for a while so today was pretty satisfying!

87roach

Today I finished the front mount, all welded up and painted. I also made the turbo gaskets since I couldn't find any.. a bit of a pain but it's done. Crank scraper is on the way too, it better fit.. after I get the scraper in and get the exhaust bolted up I can finish the wiring, finally.

I would like to get a little bit done every day, I think it will help make progress go that much quicker. I installed the front mount, so finally it's sitting on it's own weight and not the jack anymore. I've also had these for probably close to a year now...(like everything else) and today I finally managed to install them.

I think it turned out well, I was going to turn the battery around but I don't think it mattered too much. All the connections have been crimped and soldered.

More to come.. thanks for looking!

Disregarding the smart ass remark, this is my first time actually using exhaust wrap myself. I have had heard good thing's about it and it should last for a long while. I think depending on your driving conditions and climate it would change the outcome.

Well what is it ?

Hey give me some time! It's still being worked on :D

I also purchased this last year, well that pretty much goes for everything I bought for turbo so I'll stop saying that.

After much grumbling I finally put my head down and tackled it.. I was rather reluctant for a while because of the steps necessary. Well after a lot of work it turned out pretty good, not perfect but the plastic was warped and I did what I could! I am very happy to finally be done it and now I can move on :D

That's exactly what I was going for! I was going to try and get the turbo timer in there but there's no more room haha.

Also, that's good to hear about the wrap lasting on a daily. Thanks again, it is a pain to work with heh.

Right now I just picked up that crankscraper today and fucked with it all night because obviously it doesn't fit. Not only that they didn't include the baffle/trap door when I payed for that too. Really pissed off at the whole deal, now I have to spend another night just messing with that piece of shit to make it work ahhhh.

Well, I finally.. yes finally received the crankscraper I ordered 3 months ago. I also payed for a pan baffle but never got it. I phoned them today to bitch and complain about this god damn product that cost me $300 for some bullshit I had to spend a full day modifying to even work.

What I got

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip238.jpg

What I had to make it to. Trim all corners, dip stick was hitting and had to fix that, counterweights hit on the first fit(wouldn't even turn over), teflon had to be cut a lot, bla bla bla. Not impressed at all, I'd pay maybe $50

Haha yea, this is the oil pan that I got with the turbo. The previous guy had already welded on a fitting so it was just put it on and clamp the hose :D It's right beside the wastegate dump tube.

Someone finish my wiring up so I can drive already.

What's left to do? Hmm...

Finish wiring in all gauges
Wire in turbo timer
Finish wire tuck
Install heater/dash
Install radio/wire
Fab up intercooler mounting and plumbing
Fab catch can and lines

I could go on for a while but I don't want to haha.

That looks really good but I don't know what the crank scraper is for.......but that turbo looks sick, looks like its coming along great.

its also usually called a windage tray, keeps the oil in the bottom end and from foaming at higher rpm's

just curious that you removed the PCV breather tube off the back of the oil pan. Wouldn't you have issues with the oil pressure in the bottom end? A few months back i got an oil pan from dorman that was almost welded shut and caused excessive oil pressure in the valve train. This resulted in oil in the intake and oil getting by the valve seals.

These cars already have a stock windage tray. The crank scraper grabs oil off of the crank to lighten the rotational mass of the motor

Pressure from the valve train will be released via catch can setup, I am waiting on the fitting's before I can fab it up.

Very nice sir. The car too..

Thank you.

It was a good weekend, and went by very quickly.

First I wrapped up the engine bay and then I moved on to the interior(shudder).

Cut, strip, solder, heat shrink, repeat, and repeat.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip253.jpg

I labeled everything for troubleshooting if needed, there is no way in hell I would ever remember haha.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip255.jpg

The dimmer I bought didn't end up working for whatever reason(tried it when I bought it and it worked) so I never used it. I had to put the wideband box somewhere and under that other box worked out perfect. I'm happy with the way it turned out and everything fits.

Some major progress is finally done.. only took months and months but I can move on. I think I'll mount up the intercooler and start the piping.

I got most of this done on the weekend, just getting around to posting now.

Measured bumper and cut..

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip266.jpg

Fast forward after a bunch of fabrication, for the portion I cut away I welded in 1/8" flat bar. I have to finish welding it, clean it up and then paint.. and it's done.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip267.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip268.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip269.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip270.jpg

After much humming and hawing over which way to route the hot side pluming.. I will end up going the shortest route, it'll take some good fabrication but I'll make it happen. It'll be easier then wrapping it around the washer tank that's for sure. Unfortunately it will be too short of a pipe section and much too awkward to put the bov in there, so it will be going on the cold side.

I have some other projects to get out of the way before I can finish this.. more to come though.

87roach
09-14-2011, 12:02 PM
Oh yes I forgot about that. I did a few test fits and a bit of cutting to get it on there(very snug fit). So far I have just cut out the middle grill but it will take some more to get it fitting smoothly. I really wanted to have some sort of screen or net to catch things before they ruin the cooler .. so we'll see what I can implement if anything.

I'll post pictures of the bumper once it fits properly.

I haven't done much in the past few weeks, a bit here and there and some gathering of parts(the usual).

An update:

This was pretty ugly, the middle hole on the flange was about the only good thing.. so I trimmed it up and put on a piece of pipe. I just have to make a gasket for it.

After all of the fab work is done for the plumbing it'll get sent off to paint.

A20 *standard* spark plug wire holder(around here haha), spaced it out how I wanted it, drilled the mounting hole(I ended up using two of those spacers). I also drilled out the plastic holes to be larger and just generally cleaned it up.

If you look at all the pictures I posted, I have a before and after. I used the gasket to mark out the holes I needed to drill and trace the edge. You don't have to go crazy on it like I did, I just wanted it to look nice. Check out the how-to and check out the pictures I posted as well. It's pretty straight forward if you just want to slap it on.. I made sure everything lined up well with the ports on the gasket, intake manifold and head so it took me longer. You will also have to get it bored out(do this properly, take it to the shop), if you get a bigger TB then 64mm.

No more progress.. I've gotten a new job and it's taking up all my time so if I can do anything it will be on the weekends.

I think most of the major stuff is done now..

I polished up the catch can, put in the drain/level fittings, stuffed it with steel wool and got in on. I made the lines for it too, unfortunately I wasn't able to get the -10 45 in black(unless I wanted to wait for 8 weeks), I however was able to get the black/silver next day so I went with that.. kinda sucks but it'll work.

I've got to run some vacuum lines, attach the throttle cable.. a bunch of little stuff, chip the ecu, put fluids in... almost there :D

What do you want pictures of? I posted pictures of the can before, I then bought the bungs(-10), hogged out the holes so they could get welded in. Drilled and tapped a hole in the bottom for a drain fitting (1/8 npt), polished it, put the tube on the front(oil level) then stuffed in coarse steel wool into it through the bung(baffle).

If you want closer pictures I can get those.

after i had the issue with the pcv system and stuff, you will be fine as long as that line runs to a catch can of some type and is hooked up to the pcv valve and intake. The oil catch box is attached to the back of the block so that oil vapors and oil can be collected and drained back into the crankcase.

It's all about how fast the blow-by can vent, I would of liked to have used a larger air vent for the can but I had it and wanted to use it. I don't want to have a drain back into the engine, that's the whole point of me doing this. I would of liked to have done the slash tube and such but I want to make sure all this stuff works! If I have to I might fab up a fitting(where the freeze plug is) to go to another can or put a "T" in one of the catch can lines with a one way check valve. I should of also put more of a baffle in front of the one tube but oh well, I'll just have to make sure to keep the oil topped up.

I'm super tempted to just fire it up... ahhh

The crank case is connected to the valve cover by 3 oil drain holes in the head, so there can be some vapor flow. But you need a pressure difference to create that flow. For example, have the crank case vented to open air through a breather filter (at the oil pan or block) and then use manifold vacuum (through a PCV valve or some kind of restrictor and catch can) to create a negative pressure under the valve cover. That way fresh air flows into the crank case, up into the valve cover, and out to the catch can (where the oil stays). Any remaining vapor will go back into the intake to be burned with the air/fuel. Venting at the valve cover *only* will allow vapor to escape but the flow rate will be limited to however much blow by there is past the piston rings. OR, if you manage to create enough of a vacuum in the crank case it will also start pulling outside air in through the cam/crank seals. Having a negative crank case pressure is actually helpful in that it reduces the amount of air that the backs of the pistons have to push around*, but it's bad if the cam/crank seals blow out (or in).

I really like your idea of removing that lame breather box on the block though. The idea of that box is reasonable but it would work better if it was farther away from the block. For maximum effectiveness you need to cool down the crankcase gases so that any vapor can condense out before it makes its way back into the intake. That box is too close to the block and will absorb too much heat. The foam insulator around it eventually breaks down too, making that box even less effective.

I love this build. You should go to at least 10-12psi boost. Maybe even 13-14 if tuned good. Id warn against hooking the pcv back into the intake, it lowers the octane of the incoming air/fuel charge and can lead to detonation. I just vent it to the air.

Jason hit the nail on the head. If you do a slash cut in the exhaust be sure to get a check valve. summit sells the whole kit. If not the 80's Camaro TPI has them on their air system. I have 2 if you need one. When you do the exhaust slash cut I'd run a sealed catch can with it. You dont need to, but it will filter it so you dont end up with a bunch of crap in you'r exhaust.

From what I understand of your system so far, I think you're most of the way there. Remove the breather from the catch can and put it on the oil pan or back of the block (kinda the same thing really). That's where the fresh air goes into the system. Then connect the open port on the catch can to the slash cut tube on the exhaust, with a check valve right before the slash cut tube. Done.

So if you look at the whole plow path it looks like this:

Fresh outside air -> breather filter on oil pan/block -> mix with crank case gases in oil pan -> push up in to the valve cover -> go out the valve cover port -> into the catch can where oil/water vapor condenses out and collects -> air goes out through the port -> to the slash cut tube in the exhaust -> and then back out the tail pipe.

Optional: drain collected oil/water from catch can and make engine sludge smoothie. Enjoy!

I'd like to get or make one of these:

Easy. Drill a hole in a freeze plug and install a bulkhead type AN fitting. Press freeze plug into block. Instant threaded port. It would probably be a good idea to peen the block a bit around the plug to keep it from pulling out. Or maybe use some kind of sealer. Better yet, tap the hole in the block for a suitable size threaded fitting. Not sure what that would be though.

Ahh thank you very much for the solution! After I had thought about it for a while I was leaning towards something like this, but then I had read about the slash cut needing to be a certain distance from the manifold which made me wonder more. I will just have the cut in the exhaust right after the downpipe connection(does it really matter..? as long as it's within a decent margin).

I only wish I had made the tank differently now but I already have quite a bit invested into it so I'll make it work..

Also, tapping the block would be the best plan.. but I am a little late for that haha. I think what I am going to do is make up some sort of fitting and get a larger air intake on there so it won't have a problem. Get the slash cut in the exhaust(that isn't made yet..) with the check valve run to the top of the tank like you said. Is there a certain check valve that would be best? I know of fuel/air ones but it's going to get damn hot.

Thank you again, I really appreciate it!

I hope to start it in the new year after I work these kinks out :D

if you feel like some more custom fab you could go and get some pipe and scrap, make a bracket, cut an o-ring groove on the pipe weld together run a die on the outside then bolt the bracket to the bolt hole next to it. more evasive but with extra life's so to speak.

What I'm saying is the b series has 2 plugs on the back of the block . They have a kit that replaces those with a fitting o run a hose an from that hose you can put to catch can. Also gives you the plug to take your Oem catch can out. Basically what I was saying if that fitting would fit the a20s

That plug I posted above is $35, I don't recall seeing any specs on the size of it(I think it was -12 though). I'd have to measure a B block to see if it was the same size as an A, perhaps you can take a measurement of the diameter and depth? (for the B)

All I am going to do is cut off the black box, keep the insert, weld a piece of pipe onto it for the air filter and bolt it on with the stock fitting. I think some sort of inner baffle might be needed in the pipe. I wish I had done this before attaching everything on the motor but I'll make it happen. I'd like to start this beauty in january!

Okay, so I finally got outside and got some work done. It's been a while but it was nice to make some progress, I almost forgot what I was doing :(

So I picked up the can from the rip off welder and got it polished up, assembled, and mounted back in the engine bay. After that I got to work on the exhaust slash cut, once I figured out the rough placement of the check valve I started fabbing up the exhaust for it. I mounted up the flex joint and trimmed it a bit to be on the correct angle for the tunnel and then welded it to the flange. Once this was done I roughly placed the resonators so I could get some measurements, after much cutting and going under the car I managed to get it done.

So this is the ford check valve that I picked up, which is pretty much the same as the moroso kit(which I did not buy because I only needed the tube and valve).
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip321.jpg

So here is the flex joint and the next part of the pipe just inside of it(not welded yet).
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip322.jpg

I am going to run the hose above the sway bar, this was probably the best option because the hose was short and without problem.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip323.jpg

The can that cost me a shit load.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip324.jpg

The 180 fitting did not come in black so I painted it, hope it lasts a while because I really don't like the red and blue for this setup!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/roach_cato/wip325.jpg

I think I would of made the can differently should I have known how to run it properly in the first place, ah well it turned out good and I learned from it.

So after this I decided to start testing out the electrical, I removed all the fuses and plugged in the battery. I put in the radio fuse in first and went from there, but avoiding the engine ones(for now). It was all going well until the battery didn't have enough jam for anything, so that job was cut short.. and it's going to be a while I think before I can afford another one :( I may use the mini one in the mean time but the leads are so short I don't think it's possible.

I now have to make the fitting for the air breather to go on the back of the block, that will be the next job, I only need to get a small section of 1" tubing for that.

I also did some work on the mini since the signals weren't flicking off when coming out of a turn, got that fixed!

The valve is so that the exhaust will only suck air through the can instead of pushing exhaust up it.

I am checking it closely because there have been many modifications done, and I want to make sure thing's check out instead of turning the key over and hoping nothing melts. I'd really prefer to have the all in one demon instead of all this other stuff hanging about, so maybe I'll sell it off so I can break even'ish. So maybe I'll try to sell some stuff to try and get this moving along..

I want to drive already!

I will, that's great!!

Well, she was a no go.

Got everything in the cabin working, blower, windows, etc. however.. in the engine bay the aem fuel stuff decided to leak enough to be a pain the ass and lose fuel pressure slowly. I tried to tighten everything down and change out the washers(provided by aem, aluminum) to copper ones, it got better but still leaks where the fuel line comes into the rail and then the FPR base. Well, the cylinders were getting fuel regardless but there is no spark, there is no power going to the coil(black/yellow wire has nothing) and I am not sure why.. it looks like I have to tear apart the wiring to figure it out. Ugh!

Nope.. not yet, I still have to poke around. I hope to do some tests on sunday and make sure thing's are correct. I followed the instructions correctly for the MSD box, so I am wondering if it's bad? I don't know.. I am hoping I just missed something simple haha.

Well.. after poking around I have figured a few things out but I am still at a blank.

First, the MSD box is getting battery power and ground. The red and white are hooked up correctly and I have tested for power at the MSD box itself and the distributor. However.. there is no power coming from the orange wire that goes to the coil(or the black for that matter).

I have been testing this all on key turn two(and off to make sure it goes off).

Do you think the MSD box could be bad? Did I miss something? I have everything in order.. I just want to start my car :(

If by switch you mean the black/yellow, then yes I am sure it is connected. I have tried unplugging what I can and no change.

I have another MSD box, it's older but I think I will try testing with it anyway.. if that doesn't work then I'm not really sure where to go.

Thanks for the tip.

does it have a cam censer in the dizzy if so make sure your resistance vales are correct
and is it the same style coil from before you went obd1?

87roach
04-09-2012, 08:30 PM
I don't know the resistant values, hmm.

The coil was stock before it last ran, I then changed to the MSD 6A and a blaster coil.

Tonight I tried another MSD box and another coil. I disconnected the original box and hooked up the other one, still no spark. I tried it with the other blaster coil and nothing. There is no power(with the key on) to either black or orange coming from either MSD box, however... when I disconnect the MSD box I installed in the car(no battery power and no ground, but still red and white hooked up), there is power to the orange and black.

Sounds pretty confusing but the end result is still the same... no spark. I'm not sure where to go from here.. try to reinstall the stock coil? Maybe wiring to do with the distributor?

Okay, thanks for the tips guys.

I always wondered if it was needed or not..

I think the question still stands though as to which I hook up to the coil(which to positive which to negative, are any resistors needed, etc.). So if I delete the MSD box, the only thing left will be the two Black/Yellow(which are joined together), and the two Blue(which are also joined together). Since the wiring is no longer stock.. that's where it leaves me. I'll wait to hear back before I go hooking up the wrong things!

Thanks again.

No rush on the basemap, I won't be able to purchase the demon until next month anyway.

I hooked up the blacks and blues to the coil and nothing... I tried a different coil and nothing.. There is power coming from both the wires with the key on but nothing at the terminal at any point, and nothing to the spark plugs.

So I'm at a loss... and open to suggestions, apparently I have missed something.

I will have to check this and make sure. When I was wiring the new coil in I was confused as to where that ground/resistor(black wire from the distributor going to a small black box and then grounded) thing when, I believe I just ended up grounding the wire and getting rid of the small black box. I will go through and double check the connections again.

So I've been testing and testing, looking around etc.

I looked this up and went through it:

http://easyautodiagnostics.com/honda_distributor_coil/honda_coil_outside_1.php

I made the LED tool and everything(an older broken power tester, so that worked out well). I have power where I'm suppose to at the igniter(black/yellow, and the blue), but I don't have the black/white wire(I believe this is the green wire in the distributor which turns into a black on my harness, that I think I ended up just grounding) that sends the signal to the coil? So when it asks to test signal(get a flashing light on the LED tester), I never get it at any point.. So I'm not getting the signal from the ICM to tell the coil to turn on?

I was at the junkyard looking for igniters(all stripped), and the setup for a 92-93 looks a bit different. So what I am currently concerned about is this(took this from another thread):

"3rd wire from factory harness is a small black/yellow wire that goes into a condersor......labelled as "136 A 250-0.47". and comes out a small black wire that is grounded to the distributor body. When 12 volts is on the positive side of the coil, the wire going into the condensor has 12 volts...the black wire
coming out the condensor that is grounded to the distributor body has nothing. I tried swapping condensors....it still tests 12 volts coming in, nothing coming out the small black wire. PLugs on the condensor are male/female so they cannot be plugged in backwards."

http://www.3geez.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1046417&postcount=1

So, I no longer have this since I assumed it wasn't needed.. is this my problem? Does the 12v power come from the coil too? Do I hook this back up?

The condenser is the little black box pictured in this thread:

http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72625

I'm going to run through the test I posted again and write down my results, I'm getting a bit confused but slowly figuring it out.

The condenser is just a radio noise suppressor. Not needed, I removed mine. And yes you need to run the black/yellow to the coil also for a switched source.

87roach

No spark yet.

I have torn apart my wiring to make sure that the black/yellows are connected, they are(and going to coil +). I have also made sure that the blues are connected and going to coil -. I also made a direct wire from a21/a22 to the igniter and no change there. So I am thinking it could be a distributor problem from another sensor?

So the green wire from the igniter goes to the coil positive side?

I have tried all this, including a new igniter and still nothing! Maybe the coil is bad..? The only other thing that it might be is when I merged my obd1 harness to the stock harness, I could have messed up a connection there.. I'm doubting it but at this point I think it's possible. I'm going to look at the obd1 thread and see if I can figure anything out from there..

Well, I have tried a couple of different things but still no spark...hmm.

So yesterday I went back outside to check the wires again, this time I tried hooking up the other blaster coil I have to see if it would make a difference. I connect the black/yellows to the positive and the blues(and green from distributor) to the negative, turn the key to crank the engine over and no spark from the spark tester(hooked up to wire from the coil).

So, I turn the key to the on position to test for power again and it's all still the same. However, I mistakenly prodded the yellow/green signal wire with the power tester and the light did NOT come on.. however when I pulled the prod out of the wire there was a SPARK from the spark tester... This is with the key in the on position, not cranking. I did it a few times and every time I pull the prod out of the yellow wire the spark tester sparks... so the coil appears to be working but we think that maybe a sensor is out(what one?) or the ecu isn't communicating with the distributor. I did however run a different wire for the signal(yellow/green), I think I will try again and see if I can get anything working.

Thoughts anyone?

The probe you're using is grounding the coil, causing it to charge. Then when you remove it the coil discharges through the high voltage side, which is exactly what it's supposed to do. It sounds like you have a bad ignitor, or the ignitor is not being triggered. This green wire from the distributor is connected to the ignitor right? In a normal A20 distributor the ignitor would be triggered from the 4 tooth wheel (in the distributor), but with OBD1 it would be triggered by the ECU. You won't really be able to test the ignitor with a test light since the pulse from it will be too fast to see. A scope would be best. Although you might be able to see the pulse with an old analog type volt meter by watching for a blip in the needle. The output of the ignitor is a "ground" though, so you would connect the positive lead of the meter to the + side of the battery and the negative meter lead to the output of the ignitor (disconnect the ignitor from the coil). While cranking the engine, blips on the meter would show that the ignitor is firing.

You will almost certainly need a scope to test the ECU output to the ignitor as it's a rather fast low voltage signal.

http://www.justanswer.com/honda/1j982-own-92-honda-accord-problem-started-maybe-month.html (image taken from here, I have also followed this test, not the ohm one yet though..)

In this diagram, the yellow/black is coming from the coil positive. The blue wire is coming from the coil negative, as is the green wire. The yellow/green is the signal wire coming from the ECU which are a21/a22 joined into a single wire then to the igniter.

In regards to the scope.. no I don't have one and no the test light does not work for this particular test, you're right. I also don't have an analog volt meter. I did however make this test light which I think is suppose to be something similar?

http://easyautodiagnostics.com/tools_led_light/images/image_2.jpg

"The LED is polarity specific, so you have to connect the red alligator clip to the voltage source indicated in the FAST TEST article and the black alligator clip to the control source (be it the ignition module/igniter or ECM or ground)"

For the Igniter (Ignition Control Module) to start activating the Ignition Coil, it needs to receive a Triggering Signal from the Accord or Prelude's Fuel Injection Computer. So in this test, you're gonna' check to see if the ECM (Electronic Control Module = Fuel Injection Computer) is generating and sending the Triggering Signal to the Igniter.

The test you're about to do is accomplished with an LED Light. You can not use a 12 Volt Test Light to verify the presence of the Triggering Signal. You can use a Multimeter that is able to read Hertz (Hz) frequency since the signal has to be measured in Hertz. The following test assumes that you're using an LED Light.

1. With an appropriate tool (like a wire-piercing probe) pierce the Yellow with Green stripe wire of the 7 wire Distributor connector.

2. Remember, this test is done with both connectors connected.

3. Place the RED lead of the LED to a 12 Volt power source.

4. Connect the BLACK lead of the LED to the tool that's piercing the Yellow with Green stripe wire.

5. Have your assistant crank the Civic while you observe the LED Light.

If the Triggering Signal is present, the LED Light will light on and off continuously as long as your assistant is cranking the engine.(this has not happened, it's more like a constantly lit LED but dim)

You're gonna' get one of the 2 results: (1) The LED light will flash ON and OFF or (2) The LED Light will NOT flash ON and OFF. Let's analyze each result in more detail below:

If the LED light flashed ON and OFF while the engine was cranking, then the ECM is generating and sending the Triggering Signal to the Igniter (Ignition Control Module). Replace the Igniter.

Here's why: Up to this point you have verified that the Igniter is receiving 12 Volts (TEST 4) and that it's receiving the Triggering Signal. So then, since both signals are present, the Igniter HAS to create and send the Switching Signal for the Ignition Coil (which you have confirmed it's not in TEST 6). Therefore the Igniter is BAD.

If the LED light DID NOT flash ON and OFF while the engine was cranking, then the ECM is NOT generating and sending the Triggering Signal to the Igniter (Ignition Control Module). The most likely causes are either one or several of the Position Sensors within the Distributor have gone BAD or there's an open in this circuit.

Information taken from here: http://easyautodiagnostics.com/honda_distributor_coil/honda_coil_outside_5.php

Maybe it's as simple as the igniter being shot.. I think that will have to be the next thing I buy, not sure if I can afford a honda one though. Maybe I should just take a video of what I am seeing..

cygnus x-1
04-23-2012, 05:02 PM
The LED thing might work but it may be hard to see it flashing. I would try putting the positive lead of the LED to the yel/grn wire and the negative to ground. See if it flashes during cranking. It may be dimly lit and flash off instead of constantly off and then flashing on. It depends on whether the signal from the ECU pulses low or high to trigger the ignitor. It could go either way.

VR sensors are pretty reliable. There isn't much that can go wrong with them because all they are is a coil of wire wrapped around a metal form. most likely you have a wiring issue or the ignitor is bad.

I wouldn't buy a Honda ignitor either. I think I would try NAPA or maybe Rockauto.
