View Full Version : Average Engine Mileage of a 3gee

I am curious as to the number of miles the average 3gee has on 3geez. Please select the option in the poll that best fits your current mileage and then post the year and model of your 3gee along with any major work you've done to it.

Mine is a 1989 Accord SE-i sedan with 179,500 miles. Major work includes replacing the engine mounts, oil pan gasket, and potentially an EGR valve.

mine had roughly 215k on it when i sold it, and i had done both axles, alternator, replaced the rotted exhaust, along with some other minor stuff...oh..and it needed the oil pan replaced like there was no tomorrow

Mine's a 1988 DX with a little over 215k miles. Only things wrong with it that needs fixing are new catalytic converter, and the carb runs a little rich. I'm getting a new 2.25 mandrel bent exhaust though. So the first problem is solved. For the carb I'm just gonna get a 38 weber.

How far did you get with the old motor and why did you have to replace it?

my good 3gee has 80k miles on it, no major work done to it i dont think. my other one has 277k's (w/e that is in miles) which i only think had a window replaced, no engine work. engine is now dead, been thrashed

I guess that's about 172,000 miles. What caused it to die?

theauto gearbox went BANG and no longer wanted to go slow, just took off when it was put in gear, engine has a huge oil leak (blown head i think) and wasnt a much loved car. but now it's a parts car and its spirit lives in other cars :)

Well that's good. I'll admit, I started this thread hoping to get an idea for how long I can expect my own engine to last. That way I can decide whether it is worth pouring money into this car.

My car has 265 000km on it, and so far as I know, the engine and tranny haven't been touched. The last cam lobe on #4 is shredded, as I found out during the last valve set, but other than that it runs fine and doesn't burn or leak oil. The car itself is another story. I've replaced both rocker panels, one door, both rear quarters (patch panels), rear drivers frame rail, both front fenders, some rad support, a bunch of floor, the hood, the hatch, the windshield, all brakes, all suspension hardware and bushings, (hardware is grade 12 metric), oh, and the paint. The seats were also fucked and replaced.

I also replaced the brake master cylinder last week, and the fan thermoswitch in the bottom of the radiator.

when i go to the junkyard most of the 3geez have like 250k plus miles. once i saw a 300k 3gee....anyways mine are in my sigs...my dx died at 148k because of the stupid cheap radiator that the shop put in when my mom crashed into a fence

WOW... some of you have some low mileage for a 20 year old car !!
Im well over 300K miles on original bottom end, the dx has 241k miles. these are well built cars, and if you take care of oil leaks, proper adjustments, and keep them clean they last a long time.

296k on DD new head cause of t-belt new bottom (with284k at the time on new motor)
cause of an oil leak then boom. this engine needs bottom end work.waiting for new engine
260-300k project 87 bottom end went out
284k parts car motor in DD now.
This is a good car to hold on to.with any mechanical skill most of the work can be done yourself unlike newer gens.(that damn removing the wheel bearing on my 96 to change rotors still chaffs my ass).
With your miles i say go ahead and put some cash on it even if it does go you pay less for a new engine for a reliable car than buying a new one and with this site and some tools you'll have everything you need (and $) to keep it going forever

mine lasted to 180,xxx ish, it still ran but i had alot of carb problems and had to get rid of it for alot of family problems... i think if i had had the time to fix the carb she would be running strong... i have seen accords hit 300,000 easy and still purr like a kitten

Mine had about 196K miles pushing about 150 psi compression before I rebuilt the engine. I wasn't happy with them numbers.

My 89 LX-i has about 221K miles on it. No major repairs have been done yet to my knowledge, though when I got it the engine was running pretty rough (previous owner didn't understand the concept of maintenance) and the manual transmission was stuck (I managed to un-stick it somehow and it's been fine since). It's still not running perfect, but I'm constantly fixing and adjusting little things, and it's getting better. Many thanks to the members of this forum for that!

Mine is a 86LXi and has just reached 251,000 miles. Original engine, A/T. Basically, no major mods.

Big repair job done:-
- All seals on engine at 180k, now the main front seal is leaking again.
- Alternator was replaced after the car was parked for 6+ months (Started car again and found alternator not charging) (at around 200k mark)
- Starter was replaced at 240k
- Radiator was replaced at 240k
- A/C compressor was replaced at 230k after prolong problems with clutch. High pressure hose was repaired by a local hydraulic shop. The whole system was retrofitted to R134a and has been blowing ice cold air for 2+ years and no leaking.
- Drive axels are original, only have boots changed when split.
- Just replaced the rear suspension upper control arms.

I have faithfully changing oil every 3 to 4 k miles using Castrol 10w-30. Tranny oil is changed usually around 15k to 20k using Honda ATF.
The other maintenance are pretty much what a typical home mechanic can do. It is very reliable car and I drive 80 miles total a day when I am working.

1989 LXI Coupe 300K+ (did car fax after and the car had odometer fraud before i got it)
1989 LXI Coupe 176K+ (but its running a B20A now but old A20A3 was running strong)

Saw one in a wrecking yard that had 389,000 on it. It didn't want to be there it had been rear ended but other than that looked to be in great shape. The others there had 183,000 to 230,000 on them few of them wrecked. Probably most of them had misdiagnosed problems that could have been easily fixed. A few were obviously abused.

218k miles on mine. I'm only responsible for about 8k worth.
Bought it from a buddy for 400$ because it needed a battery. I parked it for a little over a year and then had to replace the alternator as it was siezed up. At some point someone had replaced the fuse for the cooling fan with the wrong amperage and had removed the relay.
Soooo... I replaced the head about 2k ago.
I'm fixing it up a little at a time. I'm going for 300k and feel like this will be the last car I ever own.

257,000 miles on my SE-i. Engine work done has been a valve grind, head boiled and milled .008 and new valve seals. Pistons and cylinders were in good shape during this work so I left the bottom end alone. The head work I did was because I got a hose clamp sucked in through my throttle body and into the valves.
