yeah stuff the gay18a engine as soon as i can either rebuild my spare b20a it will be going in. Until then the plan is to find a 5 speed a20a gearbox to stick on it and inject the a18a and cruise with that till the b20's rebuilt and then ill stick that in.

Is there an O2 sensor after, or a temp sensor near the catalytic converter? It could just tell you if the cat is not properly working.

Did you have a chance to compare both fuel tanks to see the differences?
affirmative. the EFI tank does for sure have baffels around where the pump picks up fuel from so in cases of extreem cornering the pump will still have fuel. The carb tank has nothing.... wont need it cause it has a float bowl full of fuel to use up before it starts to cough and splutter. I would recommend swapping the tanks over just to be safe. specially if you drive like i do.

Another update, Man theres 72 pics in this thread...
Today i finished installing the cars wiring loom, pulled the carb off the a18a and installed the modified b20a distributer onto the a18a.
Installed the EFI engine loom and battery cables and have got power in the car. The windows wind up and down :)
when i turn on the ignition the main relay clicks on and clicks off like it should. All i need is fuel. and to grind out the head where the injectors squirt as in the photo and install the intake manifold and it should start. I have installed a TW sensor on this one so it wont run as rich as the last injected a18a i made. Anyway heres the pics. I had to steal the blacktop intake manifold of my b20.

carotman
01-14-2008, 05:03 PM
Well, sorry to bring the bad news but this EFI conversion won't work that way.

1- The B20A distributor will not work, it's missing the cyl sensor the A20A ECU needs. The Cyl sensor is on the exhaust cam on the B20A engines. You abosulely need an A20A dizzy. The A20A has the TDC and Cyl sensor inside. It doesn't have any crank sensor.

2- The A18A head is missing the ports for the injectors like the A20A heads have.http://carotman.no-ip.com:8888/personal_site/howto/eficonversion/images/intakeport.jpg

You will need to drill them out 1st if you want to use that head.

AccordB20A
01-14-2008, 05:57 PM
i am in the process of porting the holes on the head out. But i had the engine running earlyer today.
so if the cyl sensor is the 2 wire sensor on the exhaust cam why does the engine run without it? I thought the cyl sensor was in the dizzy and the tdc sensor was on the exhaust cam.

the engine runs now, i think i ran it out of gas tho since when i crank it over it firess then stops then fires then stops. i had it revlimiting earlyer:P

AccordB20A
01-14-2008, 05:59 PM
oh and does the a20a dizzy have all 3 sensors inside it? Im running this off a b20 ecu

carotman
01-14-2008, 06:05 PM
The car might run with one sensor missing but will definetly throw a CEL code.

The B20A has the Crank/TDC sensor in the distributor and the Cyl sensor on the exhaust.

The A20A has the Cyl/TDC sensor in the distributor and uses no Crank sensor whatsoever.

If you plan to swap the B20A very soon in the car, you could just leave it like this if the car runs. However, the B20A ECU will make the A18A run extra rich and with the CEL for the cyl sensor, it won't run right.

If you want to use the A18A for an extended period of time, swap the ECU with a PJ0, swap some pins around (I make a post about this) and use the A20A distributor. The A18A will run better like this.

Make sure you port those holes! lol

AccordB20A
01-14-2008, 10:57 PM
Yeah ill play with it some more when i have fuel so the engine will actually run lol

I should make a bracket and mount the cam sensor on the cam pulley bolt

AccordB20A
01-14-2008, 11:48 PM
Hey another update lol

Today i got busy doing my wiring. I wired up the Foglights using the OEM wires. minter. i found out that on the 88-89 looms the front main loom for the car has the extra wires for the digital dashes 5 wire fuel sender. so i ran the other two wires from the plug along where the rear loom goes and put them into the fuel sender. It looks OEM as. the loom also had the rear wipoer wires so that was damn easy to hook up.
I installed a bootlid and tail lights and its sitting on rims now lol.

Yup. I have to go to mums to drill the spot welds out of the folding seat brackets and tack them in to this car before i can use the back seat properly.

Hey wohdog, could you be so very kind and do a thorough examination of your fuel level sender for your digital dash?

Honda japan doesnt carry the sender unit anymore so I'm hoping that I can modify a regular fuel level sender to work with my digital gauges, but I need to know what the extra circuitry is.

Could you take some detailed pics of it and if you have an ohm meter, find out what's connected with what on it's terminals? And resistance in either circuitrys at empty/half/full.

I'm going crazy not having a fuel level reading or a working trip computer.

AccordB20A
01-15-2008, 01:26 PM

true. and carotman you knows lots about ecus... How can you make it not show an error code for a certain sensor? I have a feeling that its possible cause some 86 ecus show an error code for egr and some dont come wqith it. theres gotta be a component in there that they change to make the error code go away for the cars that done have egr.

But i still have to install the alarm which will take ages cause i have to remove it out of the other car. Should be okay, Hell it mght even be driveable tomorrow. Wish me luck haha

OK here goes....

it works like a variable resister, as i said, theres a coil and a slider that slides along it. End to end resistance of the coil is 323ohms

red wire goes to the left and a black to the right. yellow does the moving piece that slides along the coil. The fuel light wire is the same.

the coil on the stock fuel sender measures at around 150ohms so you cant use that you will have to rewrap it and the moving slider on the stock sender is grounded so you will have to change that. I took some photos. I dont wanna play with the sender too mjuch in fear of damaging it since its so precise and precios and the only one in the damn world!!!

Alex was just talking to me and said that the one from a 2g lude may be an option as there are a few of them here with the electronic navigator, which is pretty much the same. I woinder if they are the same.. any ideas?

Thanks a bunch for taking your time to remove it again! I think this is going to help me out alot! I had also suspected that this would be how they were constructed. Now I know better where to start so thanks a lot.
The 2g ludes with digital dash also uses a special 5 wire fuel level unit, but I think they are just as rare?

The section for the fuel reserve light on your unit looks different from the regular unit though?
Btw, on the digital dash control unit there's a big and a small connector. Is anything connected to your small connector, and if so, do you know what it is?

The fuel sender from a 4th gn lude might be the solution. They all have the digital fuel unit, even the base model.

Thanks for the input! I looked at a wiring diagram and they do actually both have 5 wires and a sort of variable resistor inside. I could possibly use some of the internals of the unit if they share the same coil resistance. Here's a 4th gen lude unit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/axlline/install/2007023.jpg

i dont think you have to worry about the fuel light thing. Its different cause the sensor for it is in a tank so the light doesnt flash on and off as much with accelleration and cornering.

What plug do you mean? On the back of my dash there are 2 yellow plugs 2 ones that plug into the dahs itself and the one that does the lighting. i dont really know what any of them do tho.

Ill be installing a blue bumper tomrorow at mums. It will have to do the job. The 17s will be coming off it tomorrow and ill find some stock alloys or steelies to go on.

Went on its 1st trip tonight. Drove my mate home... Put $20 in and used nearly all of it. buyt on the way home i tested out its fuel economy and managed to get around 10.2KM to a liter of fuel according to the digital dash lol.

thats only a little bit worce the b20 in my other car gets like between 10 and 11 km/liter
I have the kickdown/TV cable for the auto gearbox attached to the clutch cable. its a must do man when im slowing down and want to engine brake.... simply press the clutch to the floor. Or if im going throgh corners and want to stay in the same gear i can control what gear the auto is in and i can limit it with the clutch cable. its really funny. but i want a manual box. Should i drive it to auckland and pick up 1ajs and see matt in it or is the fuel economy too bad??

Steve_Si

yeah i would test the milage the old fashioned way.... put so many litters of fuel in the write down how many miles it gets till the fuel light comes on.. and then do the math...

and hooking the TV cable up like that is fun.. gives the auto so much more controle

must be nice to run down to the corner and get a b20a head gasket:wave:
I have seen these factory headers in the JY, I think on 4th gen F motors, I wonder how far off those flanges are from B20a... that one you got, man those are some huge wide ass flanges..

Make sure the piston is at the top when you do this... just in case the valve drops in the cylinder hahaha.

i went for a warrant of fitness. Failed on rust under my tail light (that i knew was there) left rear tyre was an odd size (185 65 r14 not 185 60 r14 like the rest) also my right front lower ball joint has like 10mm of play so im going to fix those up and sort that so i can drive legally.

OH and i installed the correct number plates on my car. no more RP5476 plates my car is not DRE96

and i think my camera has given up on me so i cant take pics anymore until my birthday (hopes)

Rust under the tail light? How the fuck is that dangerous? The NZ WOF is completely retarded. I've never heard of a car crash or a person dying to due something rusting and falling apart on a car.

pulled the head apart (but not off) and replaced the valve stem seals with new ones. doesnt smoke badly anymore. oly slightly after deceleratio and when its cold and thats acceptable.
the old seals were half gone and so hard they wouldnt do anything anyway. I ahvent got a camera at the moment so heres the two pics my mates took

going to take car back for a wof today

Congrats on Passing WOF!!

And yeah he has to get WOF every 6 months there based on the age of his car, newer cars are once a year (I only know this cuz I read the NZ road code when I was bored)

indeed, cars 6 years old or newer only have to go once a year. they should be made to pay twice as much since they get a wof for twice as long, and if they can afford a car newer tha 6 years old they shouldnt complain

WELLLLL no updates for ages on this car. i can now do the rest of the car audio as i have a new box built now. but the other day another gay alternator died on me!!! I think it might be my inefficient amplifier causing them to blow. cause with my adequite wiring/earthing/terminals and time spend on the install the lights on the car still dim with the bass. and maybe the alternator doesnt like it.

can anyone diagnose this: battery light goes off when the car starts, as normal, but the battery doesn't charge at idle. but if you rev the car up the lights will get brighter. its like its charging when i rev it higher.....

when the alt stopped working the battery light came on, i turned the car off and started it again, the light went out so i thought nothing of it....

worn brushes?

AccordB20A
06-09-2008, 02:46 PM
i am hoping so. tried it out again before, car runs with battery not connectected. you can rev the car up and turn the lights and stereo on and it will idle with them going, turn the stereo up louder and louder and it keeps going.. lights dim as usual. then try winding a window down and it all dies. cant handle the amps im hoping its the brushes not leting enough current thru???

yeah theres a b18 one there still i saw yesterday but i chose the genuine gearbox over the b18 box. At least with the b18 box i only need to ship the bellhousing cause its compatible with the a20a gearbox.

I WANT MY CAMERA TO ARRIVE ALLREADY
