got some of the mechanicals done today, the cyl mounts under the drivers seat longways, and i made a lever assembly that increases the length of the stroke and changes it's direction. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/S4020145.jpg
the lever will operate a pushrod that slides the cup holder in and out of it's case. the cupholder will mount to the beam right under the front edge of the drivers seat, and will slide in or out with a switch.
here is the holder. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/S4020146.jpg

all right everything fits nicely behind the computer under the drivers seat.even with the seat all the way forward, you can just see the edge of it. i will have to make the mounting plate for the cup holder itself, i can't figure a way to directly attach screws into it,so i'll bond a 1/8 aluminum plate to the bottom of it,with epoxy. then the plate will attach with machine screws. once i get these two pieces mounted painted, and everything else, then i can add the linkages. and hook up the vaccume valves to the switch. then it will be done.

Very nice Tim, but how is it going to reach the cup holder if the actuator is under the seat?

seems like a little to much stuff to install just becuse someone is to lazy to open a cup holder.... looks as if your bored and just comeing up with moveing parts to work on lolol, still creative though

i'm not too lazy to open it,just an interesting way to do it. and the cupholder will slide out from under the seat,it's attached to the beam under the drivers seat so your drinks are right at the front edge of the seat. it doesn't get in the way at all i tried it i'm putting a different kind of holder on my wifes side. this is like james bond stuff

LOL I love your videos. You'd think a rocketship is going to take off, or that there is some amazing black hole that is going to be opened. Then out pop the cupholders. :) I love it. It would be pretty bitchen to have power cupholders like that. Are you going to flip a switch then or pull a lever or something to make it open and close?

power antennna switch in the factory location, all it needs is a current reversing switch.

heres where it will mount, http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/S4020149.jpg
it goes a little bit more towards the passenger seat when installed. it gets another sperhical ball joint on the other end too, where it attaches to the holder.
the tank for the brake booster,i'm just going to tap off of it for vaccume. i had already figured on doing this when i put it in,so theres a 1/8 npt pipe thread tap on top for this. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/S4020150.jpg
i finally got a good pic of the vaccume hose where it comes into the car too. and the clamp i made for it. i'll be glad when i get my carpet in. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/S4020151.jpg

naa it's telling me it was a shitty weld, the mechanism other then that works flawlessly. needs 3.5 inches of travel to open the holder all the way,i've got exactly that amount. should work with no problem.

and the bracets on the cup holder itself are on,the plate is epoxied to the plastic makes it a lot stronger

why do you need "powered" cup holders?

attached to the beam under the drivers seat, right in front of the seat edge. i always have my seat all the way back anyway right here http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b205/moultriemanicmechanic/S4020149.jpg

because i can,and because it's vaccume operated not a linear actuator. seen them with a linear actuator, but never vaccume operated. also when i get the car done, points from the judges hopefully

lostforawhile
01-07-2008, 04:53 PM
so youre going to have a cupholder between your legs?
well at the bottom edge of the seat they don't get in the way there at all, i have no where else to put them whatsoever. more of a can holder. better then the between the ebrake fall over holder. my seat is always all the way back anyway. puts a can about 6 inches off the floor.

lostforawhile
01-07-2008, 07:18 PM
i will try to get the cup holder actually bolted to the car tomorrow, then you can see where it sits,it's almost on the floor being on that beam. it doesn't seem to get in the way at all except you have to be carefull getting in and out of the car, therefor thats why it's motorized, it folds out of the way. i could have done a linear motor, but everyone does that. who does vaccume and valves,so on and so forth? i need to bolt it in and the mechanism so i can figure out how to mount the pushrod.

Im having visions of a crushed and partly split can, and soda foaming all over the carpet, when you accidentally push the retract button while your drink is still in there. It needs a weight operated safety switch!!

ok more progress i had it hooked up on a piece of wood to check to make sure all the linkages work properly. the pushrod will be much shorter on the car of course.

i hope to go by the junkyard tomorrow and get a couple of vacume valves, probably ac idle control valves, then i can get this think hooked up and working. it won't take much now,the switch was wired in a long time ago. i do need to find a power antenna switch that still has the emblem on it. that will confuse people good, since i have no external antenna visible. complete stealth. i have another small gear motor around here somewhere. i thought about motorizing the glovebox someday also. would be pretty easy. that way i could do away with the latch when i paint the dashboard.

more done, the valve body assembly. i used reverse bias diodes, then i only need two wires to control both valves. i'm using a power antenna switch, when the current is going one direction, one valve operates, when it goes the other direction, the other valve operates. these are a couple of valves out of an old black box, they are self venting. when you turn off power to the valve, the controlled side of the valve vents it's vaccume.

all built from parts i found or machined out of aluminum except for a few oddball pieces of hardware. total cost about 15 bucks. the cupholder i found in a trunk at the yard, the cyl. was in a dumpster, the lines are salvage. etc. even the rod ends are off of a crashed ultralight.

i think i'm going to make an upholstered piece that fits over the components so when i put the carpet in,i can trim it to under that instead of unbolting everything and trying to fit the parts around it. besides if i put them on top of carpet it's going to change the linkage geometry. took long enough to get it right to begin with. i also need to put something in there to keep crap from getting under the seat and in the machinery. i want it to look nice, because when i go to car shows i can slide the seat forward,so you can see the mechanism. i think it will look much better with black carpet though.

that's kinda how we used to do conversion vans, use matching carpet without the heavy backing, OR you can use the genreic speaker box grey, or even matching vinyl . Use 3M 99 or 77 adhesive spray glue on the flat part of the carpet piece but cut a piece of paper first so you know how to cut it to make it seamless um seams. :)

yay! i finally took the car out because it wasn't freezing and tried it out. it's actually eaisier to put the drink cans there then it is between the seat and ebrake. and they seem nice and stable. i restricted the vaccume on the side of the cyl that pulls it closed because when it closed it folded up the bottom drink rest and popped the can up and out. so i have to flip up the bottom retainer so it closes. if it ever malfunctioned i could see the drink can launching up and spilling everywhere. lol. it works great though.
