Hello,
I have been a lurker on these forums ever since I did an engine and transmission swap on my 89 accord. Anyway after about 6 months of driving the car I decided that the thing needed a paint job.
Here are some before shots.
http://i24.servimg.com/u/f24/11/77/98/71/pict0014.jpg (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=12&u=11779871)

I used the roller method of painting that has been floating around the internet on various sites. Here are some shots of the finished product.

http://i29.servimg.com/u/f29/11/77/98/71/pict0211.jpg (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=152&u=11779871)
http://i29.servimg.com/u/f29/11/77/98/71/pict0212.jpg (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=153&u=11779871)
http://i29.servimg.com/u/f29/11/77/98/71/pict0213.jpg (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=154&u=11779871)

If you want to see progress pictures then the whole process is laid out in painstaking detail here (http://rolledon.com/projects-f2/1989-honda-accord-brightside-dark-blue-t57.htm).

If you have any questions about the paint process or the car feel free to ask.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. This car was sort of a pet project of mine. I had done all kinds of mechanical work on cars growing up. This is the first one where I can say that I have done all of the work myself.

I'm sure I've seen worse paints done with Spray guns. Thsi is just awesome. The color is nice too. Kinda looks like the SE-i on those pictures.

I wish it was an SE-i, but if it was I doubt I would have been able to buy it for $150. In about a month when the paint has had time to cure, I am going to wet sand and work on a few places that need some attention. Maybe I can get it a little closer to a show car finish, but notice I just said closer.

You wouldn't believe how much better it feels to be driving around in this thing since I painted it. The look on people's faces is priceless when I tell them that I painted it with a roller.

Here are a few indoor shots before the paint had a chance to get dirty
http://i27.servimg.com/u/f27/11/77/98/71/pict0246.jpg (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=150&u=11779871)

It looks black indoors, but I promise it's the same car.

btw, carotman, I'm glad to see that you like the paint job. I followed your write-up when I switched this thing over to EFI. In fact, I think thats how I found this forum. So thanks.

Oh yeah one more thing, To any one wanting me to paint their cars....
NOT ON YOUR LIFE :) there isn't enough money in the world to make me go through that for someone else's car. It takes a lot of time to do this. But I get a lot of offers like that from people I know. The beauty is that roller painting is the easiest thing in the world to do. But I will give any advice on how to do this for free.

Wow, that is the FIRST car I've seen that it really, actually looks like a pro paint job. I, am truly impressed. Kudos to you!! I've spent more than 100 bucks in sandpaper and masking materials alone in my project than you did on your whole paintjob LOL, and yours came out amazing. And you're already done!!!! Ohhh now Im depressed.....

How does it really look in person? I know pix can really hide alot of flaws, but I dont really see any hints of flaws in these pix. If you've ever been to car shows where you've seen a truck or car in a magazine, and it looked amazing, then you see the vehicle in person at a car show somewhere, and it has runs and trash in the paint, tons of swirl marks, wavy body work, etc, kinda ruins the whole image you had of it from the magazine or pix.

Honestly though, Earl Scheib aint got shit on you bro. 100 bucks for a shine like that, you aint gettin nowhere else..... :welcome:

I can't lie and tell you that it doesn't have any flaws. There are a few spots where the paint didn't cover completely. However, I will say that I looks better than any budget paint job from any shop that I have seen. I could have done a better job in terms of surface prep and really had a perfect paint job, but I had three weeks to finish it. I will say that this is a very time consuming process, but I have more time than money.

how where the fumes when you did it? btw it looks amazing. never would of thought it was done with a roller without telling me

tzyoung
01-27-2008, 10:22 PM
Fumes??? what fumes?
The fumes were not a problem at all when using this paint. I thinned the stuff with regular odorless mineral spirits that I bought from Lowe's. The stuff smells no worse than house paint. It does have a vegetable like smell when wet sanding, but other than that there are no nasty fumes, smells, clouds of paint, over spray, paint colored boogers, sticky arm hairs, or isocyanate sickness associated with this method of painting.

RamThis,
I just took a look at your project page and It was a flashback of the same things I have done to my car so far (except for the sunroof thing. Thats just crazy). Good luck with the EFI swap. That was the first thing I did to mine. Once I remembered that I had left out the main relay, my engine fired right up. Didn't run well but it fired.

It looks pretty good, but as with any budget paint job, it does look a bit dull; however, yours looks better than any i've seen thus far. I think the best color for this type of paint job is white, because it naturally hides the faults pretty well.

It could be the pictures, but it looks like the sides of the car are dull while the hood looks perfect.

Either way i'm impressed. That's a lot of time, effort, and dedication. Props!

Boy, that's for sure. Years ago, I flew out to Indianapolis from CT to buy a '35 Dodge pickup. I was a little hesitant, because it had just been painted, and I'm usually really leery of that kind of situation, but the seller was very nice and straightforward, and I really wanted a '35. Also, the truck was in a car show in the infield of the Indianapolis Speedway, and I had never been there. Mopar was the featured marque (this was in '82 btw).

I get there and the nice grey paint job that appeared great on the pictures was this incredible mud job. Overspray, orange peel, you name it. The truck was a low mileage straight body estate vehicle, and that paint job had just destroyed the value. I walked.

The good news is that they had an incredible lineup of Mopars. 3 or 4 hemi Daytona's and Superbirds, plus more 440's. A couple of Hemi Challengers and Cudas, a whole bunch of incredible Mopars. More than I'd ever seen in one place. Got a ride around the track in a tourist bus, plus cruised the museum. Lemme tell you, without all the people the Speedway is one BIG place.

That's gravity for ya. I imagine the level surfaces could hold more paint and it would level out smoother and flatter without runs than the vertical surfaces like doors and fenders etc.

I think the sides look about as shiny as the upper surfaces really. Im impressed and that says alot since I am a perfectionist with stuff like this.

Actually in person it is quite the opposite. The hood and roof have the most imperfections where dust and dirt could land in the paint. The sides especially under the body trim has the best shine IMHO. The hood also shows a few sanding scratches from some amateur body work, but we wont talk about that :). I appreciate all of the positive feedback this is getting. I'll have to say I swell with a little bit of pride each time I walk up to the car in a parking lot.
