like the topic says, is the fan operated independently?

also, i plan on installing megasquirt on my car soon, and id like to eliminate as much of the stock harness as possible. the only part im really stuck on is the starter wire, and the alternator wiring. does anyone know how i would be able to remove the harness, yet still be able to start my car with the key, and still let the battery get charged by the alternator?

There is a sensor in the Water neck thats for the fans, it contols if they come on or not, then theres a Fan timer under the passenger seat that controls them based on input from the sensor

The fans and alt are not controlled by the ecu on our cars. This should help with the alt and starter:

This may or may not be helpful since I have a (formerly) carburetted Prelude, but there are two (as I recall) harnesses that go to the engine. The lower one plugs in by the battery and has the starter, alternator, reverse switch, and oil pressure switch wires. The upper one went to all the other sensors and emissions controls, including the infamous black box of vacuum hose death.

right about now im trying to figure out which wires i can throw away, and which ones i should keep cause im going to install megasquirt very soon. kinda weird that the starter solenoid switch is in the same harness with the engine harness IIRC. if possible, id like to ditch the entire harness and start from scratch, but the alternator wires are the tricky ones for me since i dont know what does what and what i can keep and ditch since its got more then 1 plug/wire going into it

Well, the starter solenoid is part of the starter, which is basically on the engine. But it's probably incorrect to say that there is a single engine harness. At least on my Prelude there are multiple sections to plug in that go to various places. Anyway, you're pretty much just going to have to figure out bit by bit what stays and what goes. Remember there are also wires for the headlights, wiper motors, fans, and other stuff going into the engine bay so everything is kinda lumped together.

If I were you I would leave the alternator stuff alone unless you think there is a problem.

Don't know if this will help but here is what mine looks like:

Some of these are from when it was still in progress.
