somebody else post if your low fuel light comes on at 12 gallons, that is really good to know if it is, That means I can drive three more days on the low fuel light !!!!

You have to take in account that the unit inside the tank is old, so it will not read as accurately as it did when it was new.

According to what i've read in the manual, the fuel light is supposed to come on when there is less than 3 gallons in the tank. The gauge is supposed to read the top 10 gallons so you have a 6 gallon reserve when the needle is on E. So it sounds like for the most part that it is functioning as designed.

I can also report that my gas light turns on and I will fill the car up and only put in 11-12.5 gallons. The gauge has never gone completely to E though, and I don't want to risk that.

My 87 LXi Hatch will only take about 12 gals when my fuel light comes on. I've always wondered about this.

Yeah, I happen to know for a fact that my light doesn't work. I've put 15 gallons into the tank before and the light never came on, there's a diagnostic section in the shop manual for it but I haven't bothered to figure it out.

Wow i always thought they were 13 gallon tanks. I don't think my light works either but i've never had to put more than 13 gal. in at one time it's been below the E but not to the bottom.

most cars with have 5 or 10 liter reserve once the fuel light comes on
never had to put more than 45 in mine which would point at about 50l tank

When my gauge reads E, it'll take 12 gal. Most I've ever put in it was 14. Never had the light come on. Only retards run out of fuel.

Yep the light is not really bright and it is in a place on the dash that is not easy to see normaly. I guess it would be at night though.

Mine also does the same. My gas light never comes on. I can only put 11gal when empty. When the needle gets down to very close to E, the engine will slightly miss. I think the old fuel pump is having hard times maintaining fuel pressure if the fuel level is too low. I also suspect there may be lots of deposits accumulates at the bottom of the fuel tank too.

I found out the hard way the low fuel light on the DX does not come on. I was in the middle of the interstate, with concrete barricades on both sides. I barely made it to the beggining of the off ramp, otherwise there was NO median on the right. It was a great day for my brake lights to stick too..

I guarantee that won't happen again, I was VERY lucky.... that easlily could have been disasterous, three more feet back and I would have been in the road and at the time, traffic was buzzin by so fast I couldn't get out of the car for several minutes, I was thinking,, dam Im dead. That string of red light in the picture is a car going by,, whoosh.
Interstate 20 is under construction there and there are blocks all on the sides.

My 86 dx has a 15.2 gallon gas tank with reserve according to the original owners manual... And to be honest I've run it to the point of just shy of that when filling up... Btw my gas light doesn't come on so I estimate by my milage... Right around 375 miles...

Yes light comes on around 12 gallons used. Tanks are 15.9 gallons, you can put about 16.2 if you fill it up to the cap. I usually drive 100 miles after the light comes on, its exhilarating.

I go to shell cause it makes my engine happy lol. Even 89 at shell kicks 91 at PetroCanada's ass. I filled up with 91 at Petrocan, and the car didnt respond to the gas pedal! Then i put in 89 at Shell and it was running good.

Btw, what octanes do you guys use?
